Curious about koryu?
Just what are the koryu bujutsu ? Authentic classical Japanese martial arts or traditions are quite rare in the West, and there's not a whole lot of reliable information in English. If you're curious, these introductions to the koryu will get you started with definitions and general explanations of the martial arts of the Japanese samurai.
Thinking about training in koryu?
What are the differences between modern martial arts training and training in the koryu bujutsu? How do you find a legitimate, authorized instructor? What does it take to get admitted into a koryu? What will be expected of you if you do join? These articles focus on answering questions for the prospective koryu trainee.
Already training in the koryu?
There's so much context that is so enormously difficult to convey to koryu practitioners outside of Japan. Here's good place to start finding out how much there is you need to know about Japanese culture in order to fully understand your training in these traditions.

Centuries of feudal warfare in Japan , and the desire to perfect the skills for war, led to the creation of the traditional schools of Japanese martial arts Japanese name Kanji Hiragana Transliterations Revised Hepburn koryū Koryū Koryū is a Japanese word that is used in association with the ancient Japanese martial arts . This word literally translates as " old school " or "traditional school". Koryū is a general term for Japanese schools of martial arts that predate the Meiji Restoration (the period from to which sparked major socio-political changes and led to the modernization of Japan ). While there is no "official" cutoff date, the dates most commonly used are either 1868, the first year of the Meiji period , or 1876, when the Haitōrei edict banning the wearing of swords was pronounced. The systems of Japanese martial arts that post-date the Meiji Restoration are known as gendai budō . The most well known of these arts include judo kendo , some schools of iaidō , and aikido . These newer systems are commonly valued as sports or arts for self-improvement. The koryū systems of martial arts, however, are commonly far more revered as they are considered the teachings of the true Japanese martial arts, due to the fact that they were formed from Japan's

What is Koryu Bujutsu, and is Budo Taijutsu Koryu Bujutsu? Ko is a word that means old, and ryu refers to flow or school.  Put together, they form the word Koryu, which means "old styles, schools or traditions".  Bujutsu is of course arts of war- that is, martial arts introduced soley for the purpose of life and death combat.  The term koryu bujutsu refers to martial arts of mainland Japan that originated sometime up to and including the Tokugawa period (1603-1868).
Why have I included this page?  Because there is a website, a very good website with a wealth of information, called Koryu Online .  I looked through their material, quite impressed, and purchased one of their books.  I thought I had found a group of individuals who, in this modern age of sport martial arts and Power Rangers, strive for the same understanding in similar arts.
You can imagine how disappointed and distressed I was when I found this page and what was written near the bottom of this page.

THE GREAT WORKS OF NAGOYA KORYU
This page was generated with permission of Mr.Masaaki Satoh, the author of the book "Nagoya Koryu dako".
There are three types of Nagoya Koryu. Those are a horsefly(Abu) type, a cicada(Semi) type and a bee(Hachi) type in their configuration. The Nagoya Koryu shows an excellent flight feature in a strong wind such as 5m/s to 15m/s and have a hummer with high pitched sound.
Although the height of the kite usually does not exceed more than 60 cm, the flight stability in the strong wind is very excellent. The building technique is very difficult because it needs a supurior craftmanship and experiences.
Mr.Masaaki Satoh is an outstanding kite builder of Nagoya koryu. Following kites are his great works.
The frame constructon and dimension of typical Abu dako is shown in the last of this page.

Finger Lakes Koryu Kai Classical Japanese Samurai Combative Arts in Ithaca, New York   Finger Lakes Koryu-kai provides the Ithaca, New York area with its only fully authorized instruction and training in koryu bujutsu - the traditional fighting arts of the Japanese samurai.  The members of our small group study one of two historically important classical Japanese combat systems.  These koryu bujutsu are the Tenshinsho-den Katori Shinto Ryu and Shinto Muso Ryu Jo.  All classes are held under the direction of Larry E. Bieri, a senior member of both traditions with over 30 years of experience in Japanese weapons arts.  Mr. Bieri began his study of these and other martial ryuha (traditions) during a 16-year stay in Japan that began in 1971. Classical Martial Arts Training
The classical Japanese martial arts known as 'koryu bujutsu' were developed by and for the bushi, or warrior class of Japan, and have a lineage that runs back through each headmaster to the founder of the tradition. As a general rule of thumb, to be considered koryu, an art should be able to trace its founding to prior to the Meiji Restoration (1868).
Melbourne Koryu Kenkyukai provides classes in two of the classical martial arts of Japan, Tatsumi ryu Hyoho and Toda-ha Buko ryu.
Tatsumi ryu
studies the use of the Japanese sword and includes iai, kenjutsu, sojutsu, yawara, bo, hanbo and naginata.
Pictured is (left) Kato Hiroshi, 22nd Headmaster of Tatsumi ryu and (right) Saito Masaru Sensei, a senior exponent of Tatsumi ryu
Toda Ha Buko ryu naginata-jutsu involves the use of naginata against naginata and also naginata against the sword, the spear, and the chain and sickle.
Please see our classes page for training information
We will also have available a range of koryu books and martial arts supplies available at our online shop under construction.

Koryu Books and Resources
Winter 2002, V.10.6 Koryu, (literally, "old style") martial arts is relatively rare in the West, but it is making inroads as more and more students study in Japan and return to their homes with valid teaching licenses. There's been a dearth of really good koryu books available until recently, most especially due to the efforts of Diane and Meik Skoss, at Koryu Books . But there are also other resources. If you end up in the used book street in Kanda, Tokyo, there's a couple of books you should try to dig up. We've included Japanese language and English language books in case you want to wade through the Japanese to dig up some really great gems of knowledge. You can also check out buyubooks.com for rare and hard-to-find books in Japanese. Note: (J) denotes the book is written in Japanese. Furyu the Budo Journal wmuromoto@hotmail.com
