Koo Self Defense
ABOUT KOO SELF DEFENSE History of Koo Self Defense Koo Self Defense was developed in Cartersville, Georgia, USA by Master Roger Koo in 1992 following 20+ years of traditional Martial Arts training (32 years to date). Through his many years of training since the age of fifteen, Master Koo discovered that most of the techniques he had been taught and sought to perfect were not practical and did not translate into real life situations. All martial arts find their roots in other martial arts styles. Koo Self Defense is no
exception. Master Koo while in his search for a progressive and practical martial arts found Choi Kwang Do but after only a short time found it to be very limited. It, like other martial arts styles emphasized on one look for all students rather than one that fits each. He found that all martial arts systems tried to duplicate the movements of its founder which severely limited individual achievement. He abandoned this antiquated approach and developed a revolutionary, progressive and more importantly realistic and varied methods of training and drills for his students. While others sought to adopt from other styles, Master Roger Koo eliminated all traditional techniques which found no real translation into real self defense situations. Koo Self Defense is leading the way in the much needed evolution of martial arts and self defense

My Training Diary
About Me
I was born and raised on the South side of Atlanta. My older brothers taught me to fight when I was 5-6 years old. I was not very good. I lost most of the fights. I tried boxing Golden Gloves one year in High School. I had good speed but lost due to a lack of power. None the less, I always had confidence and felt I owned my own personal space. I was in pretty good shape until about 40 years old; then I quit smoking and gained about 40 Lbs. I exercised until I was about 45 and then gave up. Ten years later, I was an out of shape 232 Lbs and got 'winded' carrying out the trash. I no longer felt confident. I felt vulnerable, slow and clumsy.
In January of 2001, a friend introduced me to Master Roger Koo's program at his studio in Downtown Cartersville, Metro Atlanta, Georgia, USA. I didn't know if it would work since I was so miserably out of shape. I decided to try for 30 days and see what happened.
The First Month of Training
On the 15th of January 2001, I started training under Master Roger Koo, exercised 3 times per week for about 1 - 1 1/4 hours. The 1st session on Monday was very difficult. I could hardly walk the next day and wondered if I had made a mistake. When I exercised Wednesday, I was very sore before and after. I made it through another session Friday and spent most of the weekend on the sofa with multiple hot pads. The first week was hell.

Dr. Russell Pruitt Koo Self Defense This is an article that I wrote and published on Thursday, February 28, 2002 in The Daily Tribune newspaper's Special Supplement on Health. Like many people, as the year 2002 approached, I thought about a New Years resolution. It was readily apparent that my physical condition was fading as the years passed. Though I don't have a physically demanding job, the long hours and fast pace had begun to leave me physically exhausted, particularly after a long weekend of call responsibilities. I knew the benefits of regular exercise, but like many, always had excuses not to exercise: "I don't have time", "I 'm too tired", "Exercise is boring". I had observed Master Roger Koo's self defense classes in the past, but never made the committment to enroll. Then a friend of mine convinced me to give it a try. The first class was a real eye opener. Watch out Billy Blanks, Master Koo's class was turbo Tae-Bo. The class began easy enough, a few minutes of stretching and light aerobics, then I heard what was to become an often repeated phrase. "This is just the warm-up." The next 15 minutes consisted of a variety of abdominal exercises which left me wondering if I would make it through the rest of the class. Great, still just the rest of the warm-up. The last half of the class consisted of a series of kicking drills. And I don't mean just kicking, I mean KICKING, like that guy that won the Superbowl with the last minute field goal. Kicking like Chuck Norris movies stuck on replay, kicking over and over for 15 minutes until we changed partners and then I became the one holding the pads. My partner in this exercise had been exercising with Master Koo for 3 years and I could feel the power. When he was done, I realized how out of shape I was, I was tired from just holding the shield.

Koo Self Defense International - Canada
History of James Koo
My training at Koo Self Defense started in July 1995. I really enjoyed the class training at Koo Self Defense, there were many different types of classes and drills. All of the training was done on focus mitts and shields using realistic movements. The hitting power of the all of the students was incredible, some of them only had been training for a few months.
At Yellow Belt, I achieved Assistant Instructor status. I was doing intensive training under Master Roger Koo, training to become a Chief Instructor. I have learned a lot from Master Koo he is an excellent instructor.
I earned my Black Belt in December 1996 and my 1st Degree Black Belt in April 1997. In August 2000, I went to Master Koo's school for two weeks of intensive training. The workout is even better than it was three years ago. Kick boxing aerobics and jump rope are now a part of the warm up and there are more focus mitt and shield drills. Master Koo has truly created a great program for self defense training and fitness. I really enjoyed the time I spent there and look forward to returning in the future.

Kurt Zettlemoyer Koo Self Defense
My Black Belt Test On a very rainy March 3 of 2001 I took my black belt test for Koo Self Defense International. It was, to say the least, a memorable experience, and certainly the hardest I have ever pushed myself. The test began with a series striking and kicking drills that simulate a street attack. These were not the rehearsed and choreographed "step sparring" you see in most martial arts studios. These drills involve a moving attacker who can be chasing you, retreating, or charging. You must then perform a kick or strike to halt his motion, and counter attack with whatever strikes and kicks you can. These drills are very tiring and after this part of the test, I was already very tired, despite the vigorous aerobic and strength training I do. Next came focus mitt sparing. This exercise consists of 60 seconds of striking focus mitts with full power at full speed. It is similar to the "mad minute" that boxers perform on the heavy bag, except in this drill, your targets are moving around the gym, switch from head to body and back at random, and are encouraged to hit back! When the mitt sparing was over, it was time for shield sparring. Shield sparring is basically the same as mitt sparring except now you must kick as well as strike, and yes, the person holding the shields is still trying to hit you. Finally came the much dreaded breaking techniques.

Dr. Larry Kjeldgaard Koo Self Defense
My name is Larry Kjeldgaard. I am 40 years old. I started training with Master Koo at Koo Self Defense Institute in late January 1998. This is my only exposure to martial arts.
My educational background has provided me with special insight into Master Koo's teaching philosophy. I have an undergraduate degree in Physical Therapy and practiced several years in the field.
I am also a Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O). Currently, I am an Orthopedic Surgeon who concentrates on spinal surgery. Most of my adult life has been devoted to the study of how the body works.
I can say without reservation that Koo Self Defense works! Master Koo has had the courage to develop his own style of training and fighting based on sound principles of Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Kinesiology. His system is based on what works in the real world (the streets) and not the artificial world of the martial arts studio.
His training methods have refined over the years to include the best of Aerobics, Stretching or Flexibility, and Strengthening programs tailored to a martial arts environment.
I have learned specific techniques of kicks, punches, and dodges that are designed to generate an incredible amount of power in the shortest period of time possible. These techniques are designed for disabling an attacker in a street situation.

12. Eric Harris Koo Self Defense
My comparison bettween other martial arts that I have studied and koo self defense.
http://harrisksd.tripod.com/
Eric Harris Koo Self Defense My earlier 15 years in other Martial Arts I'm a 20 year old martial artist from Cartersville Georgia. I have been in a wheelchair since birth because of a mild case of a disability called Cerebral Palsy,. but it doesn't stop me from doing what I want because I simply don't let it. I have studied several martial arts over the past 15 years of my life and I love them all. In 1988 at the age of 5 I was introduced to Kenpo through a friend of mine named Scott Dennis Jr. His father had learned kenpo during the 1970's whille he was stationed in Hawaii with the Navy and passed it on to Scott Jr. I used to get picked by bullies so they started teaching me and rose to the rank of blue belt in 1990, but in 1991 they were transfered to Germany. Kenpo was a wonderful art was classical for me. Then in March of 1992 I decided to expand my training by taking a home-study course in the art of Aikido. I enjoyed it because it didn't take that much strength to learn it and it was mostly joint-locks. Aikido taught me how to redirect an attacker's force and how to use it against them. It is a very effective art and I love it, but in 1998 I quit because I felt as if something was missing. During my Freshman year in High School I met Jeff Benett who was studying Ninjitsu and the art of Japanese sword fighting called Kendo. I trained with Jeff extensively for a 6 months. During that time I learned how to use other weapons including Shirukens, Kamas, Sais, and Nunchuckus. I also learned a few pressure points and became skilled in Archery as well as several meditition techniques too. However there were a few things I could not do in Ninjitsu because of the limitations of my disability.
