Studying the Japanese sword arts of Kendo Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido and ZNKR Iaido
NEW!!
Location: 138 Main Street in Acton, MA. Kendo is the art of Japanese fencing. The art is practiced with Japanese fencing armor called "Bogu" and with a bamboo sword called a "shinai". The training for kendo is very intense. Iaido is the art of drawing the Japanese sword. Students do not make contact in this art, but visualize imaginary opponents while performing different attacking and defending senarios. Both the arts of kendo and iaido can be defined in this "Concept of Kendo" established by the All Japan Kendo Federation in 1975: The purpose of practicing kendo is: To mold the mind and body, To cultivate a vigorous spirit through correct and rigid training, To strive for improvement in the art of kendo, To hold in esteeem human courtesy and honor, To associate with others with sincerity, And to forever pursue the cultivation of oneself. Our Club News Practice Information Eastern Kendo Blog ... Iaido Mission Statment Eastern Michigan University strives to live up to the ideals of our teachers past and present, of the All Japan Kendo Federation, and the tenets of the All Japan Budo Federation, which reads in part:
"The object of budo is to cultivate character, enrich the ability to make value judgments, and foster a well-disciplined and capable individual through participation in physical and mental training utilizing martial techniques." Eastern Kendo History The Eastern Michigan University Kendo and Iaido Club was founded by Eric Abbey and Charles Ham in 1997. Eric had attained his ni-dan under Ron Fox of the Michigan State club, and Charles had attained his san-dan in Muso Shinden Ryu iaido while studying in Japan. Currently Eric is yon-dan and instructor for the club.
Since then the club has grown from a handful of folks to - well, a much larger handful of folks, some of whom have attained kyu ranks and dan ranks. The club has continued to be mentored by and enjoy fellowship with MSU kendo and Battle Creek kendo (under Dave Christman). We also have grown closer to the Detroit Kendo Dojo under Yoshiteru Tagawa sensei, from whom we have received much instruction and guidance and to whom we are very grateful. In 2002 we started a sister club at the University of Michigan for those U of M members who were having a hard time making it to EMU, and Yukio Watanabe-sensei of Detroit has been instrumental in developing this half of the club.

What is Kendo?
Kendo is the “Riho (nature) of the Ken,” which was self-taught and acquired by the Japanese Samurai (warrior) through their experiences in many battles using their sword. Therefore, the learning of Kendo means learning the nature of the Ken. Kendo is learning the spirit of the Samurai and is usually referred to as “the way of developing the person.”
Goal of Renshinkan Kendo
The way of developing the person is our goal. In Japan, Kendo is used to develop the person for children and adults. From the name of our group, we want to encourage each other to develop a good heart! To do this, we pay attention to the virtues of Respect, Concern, Kindness, Etiquette and Patience.

What makes us a dojo is the spirit and commitment of all our members past and present; it is represented by our flag, which we bring with us and hang on the wall wherever we train. We are a non profit making university society, founded and intended for Cambridge students, but we also welcome other members over the age of 18. Beginners need to attend a 6-session training course before they can safely join a Kendo practice. Therefore we only admit new members a few times per year. The main intake in October, at the start of the academic year. We have beaten Oxford in the Kendo Varsity Match for the last five consecutive years.

Northern California has had a rich history of kendo since the first generation of Japanese settlers came to California beginning in the late 1800's. The Northern California Kendo Federation as it is known today, is the result of efforts by both Japanese Americans and Americans of other ancestry after WWII. Today, the Northern California Kendo Federation is comprised of eleven kendo dojo's located from Salinas to Sacramento, with the majority of the dojo's being located around the San Francisco Bay area. The Northern California Kendo Federation is a non-profit publicly supported organization. All Dojo Shihan (chief Instructors) and instructors donate their time and teach on a purely voluntary basis. Due to this, all affiliate NCKF dojo's charge much less for instruction than comparable commercial martial arts studios. Affiliate NCKF dojos are all led by a ranking Shihan, or head instructor of at least 4th Dan (black belt) or above. Those below 4th Dan are only allowed to be assistant instructors in affiliate dojo's. This enables the NCKF to maintain a level of instruction which is needed to promote kendo with a high degree of integrity.
