http://www.evl.uic.edu/spiff/KendoBlog/whatis.html
What is Kendo?
On the surface it looks like two people beating each other on the head with sticks. Kendo (or the Way of the Sword) is in fact a Japanese Martial Arts form practiced worldwide. It is essentially a form of fencing whose roots derive from the Samurai in Japan. Kendo's modern appearance first began in the 1700s with the introduction of armor (bogu) and bamboo and wooden swords (shinai and bokken, respectively). Kendo is now practiced internationally by children as well as adults as old as 80 years old.
In the modern age, sword fighting has little practical purpose against weapons like the pistol- so Kendo is really more of a form of self-improvement than a practical fighting form- or as the All Japan Kendo Federation (AJKF) puts it, Kendo is "the way of developing the person."
The concept of Kendo is to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the Katana. The purpose of practicing Kendo is: To mold the mind and body,
To cultivate a vigorous spirit,
And through correct and rigid training

http://www.wlakendo.org/
SCKO Individual Tournament Oct. 14 2007 WLA Results Click above for details Kendo is literally the “Way of the [Japanese] Sword.” It is derived from kenjutsu, the sword techniques developed by Samurai warriors throughout Japan’s history of feudal warfare. Like karate-do, judo, aikido and other modern –do forms, kendo places emphasis on spiritual development and technical discipline rather than the practical application of using a sword on the medieval battlefield. Therefore, kendo is always practiced with two dueling opponents and on a smooth, pliable wooden floor. To prevent injuries, shinai (bamboo swords) and bogu (fencing armor) are used in place of the sharpened katana and yoroi (samurai armor).
Like most Japanese –do forms today, kendo has both a traditional martial art component and a sport/tournament component. Most kenshi will inevitably participate in tournaments for the exhilaration and potential for glory. However, kendo is first and foremost a martial art. Kendo is more than just a sport and one should never say that they “play kendo.” It is easy to get wrapped up in only practicing “tournament kendo” but a kenshi will never truly develop without studying the traditions of the art.
For a detailed history of kendo and its philosophy, go to
