Canoeing and Kayaking
From a beginning almost as old as mankind, when the kayak or canoe was part of the process of survival, to the present day, when boundaries of exploration are being rolled back, canoeing is a sport rich in potential for young and old - the adventurous and the less adventurous. Canoeing offers a wide range of activities, some based on competition and others, less formalised, based on journeying and adventuring. How can I get started Join with a local group or club - it's more fun, safer, and will help you to master the basic skills more quickly. Maryland's state forests and parks offer paddling opportunities for canoeists and kayakers of all skill levels - from flatwater excursions for novice paddlers, to guided birdwatching, historical and cultural adventures along intricate waterways. Paddling opportunities are separated by regions in Maryland. In addition mapped water trails are noted below. In addition to offering paddling access, several of these state forests and parks supply equipment rental. Always contact the facility you wish to visit beforehand to assess conditions. For guided paddling adventures, see the Outfitters and Guides section of this website. Water Trails
  • Fishing Bay Water Trail . The Fishing Bay Wildlife Management Area (WMA), the largest parcel of publicly owned tidal wetlands in Maryland, is situated adjacent to the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on the lower Eastern Shore. Fishing Bay's 28,500 acres offer boaters and paddlers a remote wilderness experience. Miles of meandering creeks, marsh grass habitats, secluded ponds and islands of loblolly pine have inspired some to refer to Fishing Bay as Maryland's Everglades
  • Big Gunpowder Falls . The Big Gunpowder Falls in the Hereford Area of Gunpowder Falls State Park is a nationally renowned blue-ribbon trout stream. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources manages the river from Prettyboy Dam to Blue Mount Road as a special trout management area for catch and release with artificial lures only. Coldwater releases from Prettyboy Dam enable brown trout to reproduce naturally in this tailwater fishery. Other species include brook and rainbow trout, and smaller feeding fish, such as creek chub, common shiner, white sucker, northern hog sucker, mottled sculpin and American eel.

Florida Canoeing and Kayaking Paddle power! That is the way more and more people are discovering Florida. And, when you take time to slow down, relax and explore part of the Sunshine State from the seat of a canoe or kayak, you will find there are miles of slow moving, wildlife laced rivers to discover and vast stretches of marsh and mangrove lined coastline where kayakers and canoeists can see dolphins and manatees while fishing for redfish and snook as ospreys and pelicans fly overhead.
Florida is blessed with over 1700 rivers, 40 of them major ones, hundreds of miles of low energy shoreline in the Big Bend region along the west coast and thousands of places among the mangrove forested southwest coast and Florida Keys to poke and probe. A place to paddle, whether it's for a few hours or a few days, is never far away. Many of these sites include some of the last wilderness areas east of the Mississippi. They are magical places where you can get close to wildlife and experience true isolation. This site is your doorway to all that you will need to know about how, when, and where to paddle Florida.

the Beautiful Suwannee River AND - A Huge Photo Documentary A Memorial to 9/11 Disaster. Get away from the stress of city life. Paddle softly, listen to the sound of the breeze gently rustling through the trees, marvel at a deer high up on a bank watching you, see an occasional raccoon or otter, or an alligator sunning himself. Then when the sun sets, listen to the call of the owl, supper over a campfire and sleep out under the stars. This is wonderful medicine with miracle healing powers for one's psyche. If there's such a thing as a southern "God's Country," this has got to be close.

Winter Lake Kayaking and Chasing Sunsets
A Fine Winter Day for Paddling
Originally uploaded by FreeWine I had such a good time kayaking on Sunday afternoon, I had to shoot my boat afterwards! (see photo) Dianne and I found Sunday's windless and sunny conditions impossible to resist. We got a late start, but still managed to enjoy a couple of hours of fine winter paddling on Dripping Springs Lake.
New Kayaking Gloves
We got to test out some new paddling gear. Both of us had some new cold water paddling gloves to try out and I was trying out some motorcycle rain gear. Motorcycle rain suits offer some cool benefits for winter kayaking: they are waterproof, windproof and made to pull over whatever you are wearing. Also, they are cheaper than any drysuit you will find. I found the rainsuit pants worked well, but the rainsuit top was too noisy. Since I like trying to sneak up on raptors and stuff in my kayak, I can't really do noisy.

Apple River
Outfitters in and around Somerset provide rentals and transportation for this popular tubing river. The first half of the trip offers relaxed family floating. The last half features a wild rapids area with a walkway on the side for the less adventurous.
Baraboo River
Offers a relaxing outing with no rapids or falls. It flows 100 miles from its headwaters near Hillsboro to its confluence with the Wisconsin River south of Portage. The lower stretches flow through two wildlife areas. Access is available at road crossings.
Bear River
Tranquil and unspoiled, with good opportunities to see wildlife. Much of the 25-mile course passes through the Lac du Flambeau Chippewa Reservation. Upper portions narrow with steady current through pine forests; lower stretch passes through Powell Marsh narrowing again before joining the Manitowish River as it enters the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. Low hazard riffles. Several access points off town roads.
