From the Mat to the Street:
Judo and Life
Richard Hodges
My Judo teacher was always yelling "Relax!" I could
not understand. Was I really so tense that he singled
me out for this admonishment? Didn't he realize that
yelling "Relax!" only made me more tense? In competitive tournaments I often did not do well.
It was embarrassing to be thrown by men weaker than
I, and I often felt that I didn't understand, really,
anything about Judo. I remember one tournament clearly. My opponent was a big brown belt. As he attacked I was afraid he would throw me-and in the same instant I heard my teacher's command "Relax!" echoing like an electric current in my body. I softened; and in slow-motion-time absorbed the attack, then simply threw him to the mat. I ran to my teacher and embraced him. This may have seemed strange to others who knew us. I had won matches before, but this was the very first time I had done so from understanding. I think he knew.

Doug Carter Judo originated in Japan as a derivative of the various martial arts developed and used by the samurai and feudal warrior class over hundreds of years. Although many of the techniques of judo originated from arts that were designed to hurt, maim, or kill opponents in actual field battle, the techniques of judo were modified so that judo students can practice and apply these techniques safely and without hurting opponents. The Oklahoma Judo Association is is the state governing body for the sport of Judo as a group B member of USA Judo . USA Judo is the National Governing Body for Judo under the United States Olympic Committee

FEATURED NORWALK JUDO STUDENT (Cameron regularly attends practice. He competes in many tournaments and displays a competitive streak.) My name is Cameron Gonzales and I go to the Norwalk Judo Club. I am 12 years old and I just graduated from the 6 th grade. One of my most favorite things about doing judo is teaching some of the little kids techniques for throwing or doing mat work. If you keep on doing them, they start to be a real pain in the neck. I enjoy judo because it not only helps you get stronger, but it teaches you self discipline to be a better person. This is why I do judo. Aside from judo, I have other hobbies I enjoy. I love to play baseball, watch baseball, and talk about baseball. I also love to listen to rock music in my spare time, and hang out with my friends any chance I get.

History
Judo became an Olympic sport for men in 1964 and women's judo was a demonstration sport in 1988, preparatory to its being added to the Olympic program in 1992. In Olympic judo competition, there are two pools, each with its own single-elimination tournament. The two pool winners compete for the gold medal, with the loser winning the silver medal. In each pool, the competitors who lost to pool winner enter a repechage round for another single-elimination tournament. The winners of the repechage pools are awarded bronze medals. Weight limits have changed through the years. The limits shown are those used at the 2000 Olympics. Top of page History Biography Glossaries Calendar Quotations ... Directory
