Pain in the Knee
This weekend I spoke to a few runners who are having knee problems. It's so common for runners, especially beginners, to have knee pain. But, in many cases, the problems can be remedied or easily prevented in the first place. Wearing the right running shoes and replacing your shoes at the right time (every 300-400 miles) can help you avoid knee issues. And I figured since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason, I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured since I've gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going. When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go, you know, I went. My mama always said you got to put the past behind you before you can move on. And I think that's what my running was all about. I had run for three years, two months, 14 days, and 16 hours." That's from the movie Forrest Gump , when Forrest (played by Tom Hanks) runs in scene after scene after scene.     Why is this site here?
    I purchased the first MP3 player ( the Rio 300 ) thinking I could finally listen only to great music for running when I jog. I thought I would no longer have through commercials and switch channels to find a song that would put me in the "zone." I'm not a "natural" runner, so I need all the help I can get to keep me from stopping before I reach my goal for a given run.
    Was the Rio the perfect running companion (for me?)
    Bzzzt; Wrong answer! It had very little capacity, which meant I had to have "perfect" running songs loaded, but I can't know if one is good for running until after I try running to it. That combined with the time it took to rip songs to disk and then load songs onto the player made me give up and put it in a drawer.
    Maybe we'll try capacity...
    Next came the NOMAD Jukebox . With its 6Gb hard disk, stores over 100 CD's worth of music (more than my whole collection.) The idea was I could load all my music on it and then while I was running I could figure out what songs were good for running. After getting it though, I realized it was probably too heavy, and prone to shock-induced failure from the pounding it would get while running with it. Also, three days after it arrived, I tried to install the new firmware and it croaked. Bigtime! It was back to Amazon.com

Understanding how astronauts are affected by long-term exposure to the space environment will help researchers develop techniques to maintain their health during orbital missions onboard the International Space Station. This research is also a first step in designing safe missions to distant locations like Mars, where astronauts could be required to live away from the safety of Earth for years at a time. It also may have implications for women on Earth confined to bed rest because of illness, injury or pregnancy.
