The term is used to denote a fronton (or open-walled arena) used to play a variety of Basque Pelota called Cesta Punta , and, more broadly, to the game itself. The ball is placed into play and volleyed by players wearing a glove with an attached wicker basket approximately 63 to 70 cm long. The game is characterized by the fast pace of play. The Basque Government promotes it as "the fastest game on Earth." The game is called pelota vasca in Spain but the Western Hemisphere name of Jai-alai , which is Basque for "merry festival", was given when it was introduced in Cuba. This was due to the fact that this game was played at festivals or fiestas in Spain's Pyrenees Mountains for hundreds of years. The game was then played in the open air with the walls of churches being used to bounce the ball on. Jai-alai is characterized by its fast playing pace, in which a 125g ball (or pelota) covered with parchment skin can travel faster than 180 mph. The ball is volleyed by players wearing a wicker basket glove approximately 63 to 70 cm long. The glove, called cesta-punta in Spanish and xistera in Basque, was invented by the French Basque Gantchiqui Diturbide (also Gantxiki Iturbide) in the 19th century. The game of Jai-alai is popular in countries like Spain and Mexico where, in some regions, the game is played in almost every town and city. Jai-alai also spread out to such countries as mainland Brazil, the Philippines, Italy, Indonesia, China and Egypt.

Welcome to JaialaiExtra.com. Home of the latest Jai-alai news, fronton updates, player info and more! We hope that JaialaiExtra serves as a place for current jai-alai fans as well as new ones to find information regarding the sport of jai-alai. Jai-alai is a spectator sport but most importantly it is the only sport where spectators can legally place bets on the teams competing. Jai-alai is played in a closed-in facility or fronton. In the United States, active frontons can only be found in the state of Florida. Dania Jai-alai, Miami Jai-alai, and Hamilton Jai-alai and Poker operate live jai-alai year round. Orlando Jai-alai, Ocala Jai-alai, and Ft. Pierce Jai-alai operate seasonally in short seasons of three months or less. Big Bend Jai-alai, also known as Quincy Jai-alai, is scheduled to reopen in September of 2007. Be sure to check back for updates on this fronton. For more information on Florida’s active jai-alai frontons, please follow our fronton tabs where you will find their locations, season dates, schedules, and important links. The standard jai-alai uniform is white trousers, red belt or faja, colored jersey with the numbers 1 – 8 on the front to depict the player’s post position and the player’s unique roster number on the back. At some frontons you will also find the player’s name on the back of his jersey. A helmet or casco is also required as part of the uniform.

The members of Jai Alai know how to evoke a mood. Their songs are shimmering, warm, and slippery, the perfect soundtrack for introspective rainy days or dreamily soothing commutes. The cozy bass rumbles along, providing an elastic background for washes of electronics, sprinkles of guitar, and whispers of vocals. Singer/bass player Jake Springfield's breathy voice adds an appropriate touch of smoke to David Drude's crisp guitar and Jay Abbott's tight percussion. The resulting blend of post-rock and electronic music sensibilities is both creative and comforting.

Jai alai is a form of handball for singles or doubles competition played on a court with one or three walls. Players use a curved wicker basket (cesta) for returning the ball. The game is played most seriously in Mexico City, Havana, and Miami, Fla., and on a less competitive level in southern Europe and Connecticut. The players are professionals, and wagering is common. The game is derived from either the Aztecs or a Basque variation of handball. It developed in Spain, was imported to Cuba in 1900, and arrived in Miami in 1924. The ball (pelota) is made of hard, wound rubber covered by linen thread and two layers of goatskin; it is 2 in. (5 cm) in diameter and travels about 240 km/h (150 mph). The standard rules are similar to handball rules, except the court (fronton) is much larger176 ft (53.7 m) long. There is one more player (or team) than the number of game points. If a player loses a point he is eliminated, and the next player comes on the court. The first player to reach game point wins. In Miami an alternative form of scoring is used in which 8 competitors play for 5 points. A player sits down when he has won 3 points; the first 3 players to do so compete in a playoff to determine the match winner.

Hernan Cortes took it back to Andalusia, whence it penetrated the Pyrenees and the people called it pelota (ball). The game became the main diversion of so many festivals that the Basques gave it another name, now mispronounced all over the world, meaning "merry festival"—jai alai (pronounced high lie). From Havana it reached Miami, where at the Biscayne Fronton matches began again fortnight ago and will continue during the winter visiting time. Nightly also it is played in the Chicago Fronton on Clark Street and Lawrence Avenue. As the little ball flies the spectators become wildly excited and go home later to tell of the new winter game that has come to the U. S., saying that it is the fastest game in the world.

History Of Jai Alai
The game of Jai Alai originates from Spain, over 3 centuries ago, where it was called "Pelota Vasca" and commonly played against church walls. It was brought to Cuba in 1898, where it was given the name Jai Alai. In 1926, Jai Alai was introduced as a professional sport at the Miami Fronton. Presently, there are more Jai Alai Frontons in Florida, USA, than anywhere else in the world. The name Jai Alai comes from the Basque language, meaning 'Merry Festival'. The term refers to the open-wall arena, called a Fronton, used to play the game, and a variety of other Basque Pelota games - Cesta Punta in Spanish. The Basque Government promotes Jai Alai as "the fastest game in the world", as the ball is hurled from a wicker basket at speed as high as 188 miles-per-hour (302 kilometers-per-hour), as recorded August 3rd, 1979, by Jos© Ram³n Areitio at the Newport Jai Alai, Rhode Island, USA.

Jai alai, with the fastest moving ball of any game (Guiness Book of World Records says 188mph), uses a leaning-back posture in its preferred forehand side throw technique. There can be no question that this posture is compatible with extreme power and speed.

Desperate members of the Heritage Conservation Society, a Manila-based group that rallied for preservation, could do nothing but watch tearfully as the building came down. In response, one hundred people came out to protest. Nearly 500 more wrote angry letters to Mayor Atienza and President Estrada.
