Jump to: navigation search Outdoor ice skating in Austria Ice skating is traveling on ice with skates , narrow (and sometimes parabolic ) blade-like devices moulded into special boots (or, more primitively, without the boots, tied to regular footwear ). People usually skate on frozen rivers and lakes and at skating rinks . It is mainly done for recreation and as a sport . Many musicals like Starlight Express have been performed on ice.

The exact time and process by which humans first learned to ice skate is not known, though archaeologists believe the activity was widespread. The convenience and efficiency of ice skating to cross large, icy areas is shown in archaeological evidence by the finding of primitive animal bone ice skates in places such as Russia Scandinavia Great Britain the Netherlands ... Germany , and Switzerland . The runners were made from bones of animals such as horse, cattle and reindeer. They were ground down until they formed a flat gliding surface, and thongs tied them to the feet. The skates were not used like contemporary skates. Instead they were used by straddling a pole which was used to push the user along. While only averaging 2.5 mph (4 kph) it used far less energy than trying to walk across frozen lakes. By comparison, modern skates use only about 25% of the energy of these primitive bone skates. Another study by Federico Formenti of the University of Oxford suggests that the earliest ice skating happened in Southern Finland some 4000 years ago.

Review of "Sonja Henie: Queen Of The Ice"
Three-time Olympic Figure Skating Champion, Sonja Henie , is considered a figure skating legend. She is also considered the first ice skating celebrity. Henie brought ballet and white figure skates to the ice. She was "Queen of the Ice." "Sonja Henie: Queen Of The Ice" is a documentary that gives a thorough account of her life. The ups and downs of her life and career are told. The DVD version became available in November of 2007, but the documentary was originally produced on VHS in 1993. Excellent video clips and photos are shown. Although Sonja Henie's life seemed a bit like a fairytale to the public, this DVD reveals the solemn and sad moments of her life.

Ice skating safety
Ice skating is a fun winter activity, and also a great exercise! The National Safety Council offers these tips to help you and your family enjoy safe skating.
  • Wear skates that fit comfortably and provide enough ankle support to keep you on your feet. Have the blades professionally sharpened at the beginning of each season. Skate only on specially prepared skating areas where you are sure the ice is strong enough to withstand your weight. Always check for cracks, holes and other debris. Before setting out on your skating expedition, learn basic skating skills, such as how to stop and fall safely. Wear warm clothing and rest when you become tired or cold. Never skate alone.

    How to Ice Skate
Have you always wanted to slide gracefully over the ice without falling on your rump? But do you find yourself doing a split every time you hit the ice? Here's how to ice skate like a pro. Just keep in mind it takes alot of practice and won't happen over night.
    edit Steps
  • Find some good skates. Rentals are ok at a good rink for your first steps, or else go out and buy yourself a nice pair that will last you a while. If you already have a pair of skates, check that they fit and get the blades sharpened at a skate shop. Find a friend. Learning with someone will help in relaxing on the ice. Learn that when you get on the ice, gain your balance. This is crucial. Try to find your center of gravity. The keys to skating well are relaxation and technique. These feed and grow on each other. Try to walk. This may sound ridiculous, but learning to walk will help give you ankle support and help you get used to the friction of the ice. If necessary use the wall as support, but you'll do better not to hold onto anything. The wall can become a crutch. Instead, hold your arms out at hip level to learn to balance yourself. Know that if you are right-footed, then lean on your left foot then push in a diagonal direction outwards with your right foot as if you were shoveling snow behind and to the right of you. This will then propel you forward. Then bring the right foot back in next to the left and repeat the process.

Scoring Drift in IJS Events - In our coverage of the 2007 World Figure Skating Championships we noted that the distribution of marks in the Ladies and Men’s Short Programs displayed an odd behavior, where the marks in the second half of the events were abruptly higher as a group than the first half. This unusual bimodal distribution was something we had never seen previously in figure skating marks. We attributed this odd behavior to a new method of seeding the Short Programs that was introduced for the 2007 ISU Championships and to limitations in the ability of the judges to mark consistently over long periods of time.
