Today, skating is a great leisure activity and competitive sport. The animal bone has been traded in for metal blades and boots have been added instead of straps or thongs that were previously used to strap the skater to the skates. The metal blade allows the skater to glide on the ice easily, and if more friction is needed, the skater can dig in one of the blade’s edges as a sort of brake. By leaning and pushing, the skater can gracefully glide on the ice. In this series of videos, you can learn more advanced ice skating techniques and spins. Advanced ice skating is usually reserved for the competitive arena, as is demonstrated by our expert. Ice dancing involves turns, crossovers and jumps, all of which are covered in this series. Make these techniques more difficult by trying them backwards! Get tips on stopping on the ice and learn about the basic edge in advanced figure skating. Watch as our expert teaches you how to spin on the ice. Try the more advanced spins when you are ready. Learn these and many more advanced ice skating exercises!

How to Choreograph a Free Dance
Plan an Ice Dancing Routine
Jo Ann Schneider Farris Sep 20, 2007
Free dance is the most fun part of ice dancing since it includes spins, footwork, and lifts. Learn how to choreograph a free dance in this short article.
What is Free Dance?
Free dance looks very much like pair skating. A man and a woman skate as a couple on the ice. Lifts and spins are performed in sequence and dancing is done on the ice. Free dance is fun.
Preparation
It takes quite a bit of time and preparation to be able to do free dance, so before attempting to choreograph a free dance program, master some figure skating and ice dancing basics. In fact, U.S. Figure Skating now requires that skaters pass the Preliminary Ice Dance test before taking the first free dance test. It is also recommended that ice dancers master freeskating skills before attempting free dance.
Theme and Music
The music used for free dance can be instrumental or can be vocal. Music from musicals or stage shows always work well. The music can have both slow and fast sections. The finished music must be put on an individual CD and must be a certain length. For example, the music for a Juvenile level free dance should be two minutes and fifteen seconds long.

Ice dancing is different - it is a combination of a sports activity with the grace and poise of dancing. It calls for agility, technical skill, strength and confidence.
Second, ice dancers are judged on the difficulty and originality of their dance steps, their interpretation of the music, and their timing and unison. Unlike figure skating, ice dancing does not allow movements of strength or technical skill (particularly overhead lifts, jumps, and spins). Ice dancing as a sport and dance form gained popularity in the 1930s and the first world championships were held in 1950. Ice dancing is similar to pairs figure skating, and competitions consist of three parts: prescribed pattern dances, an original set pattern dance and a free dance, which allows the greatest freedom of expression. The first Olympic ice dancing competition was in 1976. At that time, traditional ballroom dances comprised the core of skaters' programs. The leading ice dancers in the 1970s were the Soviets Lyudmila Pakhomova and Aleksandr Gorshkov. In the 1980s, the British ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean dominated the sport with dramatic and innovative choreography performed to a variety of musical forms (popular, jazz, classical and so on). They won four consecutive world championships (1981-84) and the gold medal at the 1984 Winter Olympics. Outstanding in the late 1980s and early 1990s were the Russian ice dancers ,Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko.

NyQuil and Ice Dancing
I have been sick with what I can only assume is the Avian Flu for the past few days.
I can't imagine anything else that would make me feel this awful.
I realized that I've been consuming entirely too much NyQuil and TheraFlu when I found myself watching Ice Dancing on the Olympics.
It was time to turn the TV off when I found myself tearing up when one of them fell.
I dragged my ass out of bed long enough to check the mail today.
Nothing can improve your mood when you're feeling ill quite like a wedding invitation from an ex.
I met Luke when I was living in San Francisco.
He lived in Half Moon Bay and we started talking after he saw me on the beach and volunteered to teach me to surf.
He was a pretty good teacher, and within a few weeks, I was living in Half Moon Bay with him and surfing every day.
He had a good-sized trust fund left to him by his grandparents, and even though he could have lived more than comfortably off that, he was also a music teacher at an elementary school.
And a volunteer with Big Brothers and Sisters and a few homeless shelters.

Ice dance is similar to pairs in that two people skate together, but, unlike pairs, ice dancers do not do jumps or spins and do only certain kinds of lifts. Instead, ice dancers focus on creating footwork and body movements that express dance on ice.
contribution of Torvill and Dean
development of dance
Ice skating, particularly in its contemporary form of ice dance competition, is more difficult to distinguish from dance, because both aesthetic and expressive qualities are important. But at the same time, there are certain rules that have to be followed more stringently in ice skating than in dance, and once again the governing principle is the competitive display of skills rather than the...
origin
While the English diarist Samuel Pepys claimed to have danced on the ice during London's hard winter of 1662, modern ice dancing most likely developed out of the Vienna Skating Club's adaptation of the waltz in the 1880s. The sport grew rapidly in popularity during and after the 1930s. Although the first U.S. national championship for ice dancing was held in 1914, it did not become an Olympic...

Synopsis
ITV's long-awaited answer to Strictly Come Dancing . A group of (fairly) famous people are tutored in ice dance by Torvill and Dean, and are whittled down week by week until a winner is found. The number of callbacks to S.C.D. is quite breathtaking - almost as if the director's used the same shot list. There's five judges instead of four, and the scores (out of six, in half-point steps) are revealed in on-screen style like an ice dancing competition with only a few chats with the judges. The set appears to be a car crash of leftovers from You Bet! and Ice Warriors , although the glass roof is rather nice. One thing it does have over SCD is that the practice of only opening phone lines after everyone has performed is clearly fairer than Strictly' s practice of keeping them open all week.

ISU Changes to Ice Dance Rules
2006 Modifications to Ice Dancing Rules and Regulations
Timbre Beck-Murphy Jul 5, 2006
As a result of 2006 ISU Congress decisions, ice dance teams should study their new rule books before heading into the new season.
The International Skating Union has adopted some significant changes in the judging of ice dancing competitions. First, qualifying rounds have been eliminated for ice dancers. The top thirty compulsory teams will be allowed to perform the OD and free dance. The value of combination lifts has been downgraded but more clearly defined. All lifts in the combo will be evaluated as one entity, with base values of the first two types of lifts being added together and multiplied by 0.8. Bonus points can then be added for the most difficult lift in the combo. In other words: Make sure you do whatever gets you the most points at the beginning of the combination lift. Otherwise, it's only worth its bonus. A " fall ," in ice dance is determined to be any time there is "loss of control by a skater with the result that the majority of his/her body weight is on the ice supported by any other part of the body other than the blands e.g. hand(s)..." Just as this sport has been struggling to rebuild its fan base after years of controversial and obviously corrupt judging, audience members now may have to sit through playbacks to determine touchdowns. Sound familiar? Yawn.

Brief and Straightforward Guide What is ice dancing?
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-ice-dancing.htm
What is Ice Dancing?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Ice dancing has a long and distinguished history as both an art form and a style of figure skating . First developed around the turn of the 20th century in the United Kingdom, ice dancing is meant to be an example of ballroom dancing that takes place on the ice. Here is some background about the rise of ice dancing, and how the sport continues to delight people all over the world. Ice dancing requires the presence of two figure skaters working together. As with all types of pairs skating, there is a need to choreograph the routine, making sure the movement is fluid and natural. Unlike many forms of figure skating, ice dancing is not meant to include a number of gymnastic style moves and plunges. The idea behind ice dancing is to present a graceful and entertaining routine that could easily be moved to a ballroom floor and still be performed with similar results. To that end, ice dancers need accompanying music that has a steady beat, which is also a difference with other forms of pairs skating. Interestingly enough, ice dancing is just about the only form of ice skating presentation that will allow the use of vocals in the accompanying music.
