It was first competed at the World Figure Skating Championships in , but did not become a Winter Olympic Games medal sport until . As in pair skating, dancers compete as a couple consisting of a man and a woman. Ice dance differs from pair skating by severely limiting lifts, requiring spins to be performed as a team in a dance hold, and by disallowing throws and jumps. Typically, partners are not supposed to separate by more than two arm lengths; originally, partners were supposed to be in a dance hold the entire program. This restriction has been lifted somewhat in modern ice dancing. Another distinction between ice dance and other disciplines of skating is the usage of music in the performances; in ice dancing, dancers must always skate to music that has a definite beat or rhythm . Singles and pair skaters more often skate to the melody and phrasing of their music, rather than its beat; this is severely penalized in ice dance.

Ice Dancing's Royal Pair Proper Revolutionaries

Models of stateliness on and off the ice, Christopher Dean and Jean Torvill of Britain have changed the course of ice dancing. (File Photo)
We're talking about royalty. Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, the princess and prince of ice dancing. Their names are inscribed along with those of other historical personages in the city council. But her first name, alas, is spelled without the "y," an unfortunate oversight in as much as the ex-insurance clerk is the first woman to have received the honor. "Well," Dean said, "we can always start a rumor." They are so blond, so proper, so British in their matching blue pin-striped blazers, red, white and blue argyle sweaters and Olympic ascots. And so quiet that it's hard to make out the words, hard to understand what all the commotion is about. On the ice, well, that's something else. In the last three years, the years they have reigned as world champions, Torvill and Dean have revolutionized the sport of ice dancing. They may not look like radicals. But they are.

Spins are done together in both disciplines, but in Pair Skating difficult solo jumps and spins are also done in unison. Ice dancers do intricate footwork sequences to music and must skate to a certain beat.

*Ice Dancing* Have you ever wanted to know how ice dancing started? What kind of dances are performed by ice dancers? Ice dancing has a very strong tradition in the United Kingdom. British dancers were the first to learn ice dancing. This sport started in the 1930's and is based on ballroom dancing. The first world championships were in the 1950's. Now ice dancing is most popular in Europe and North America. The most popular dances are the Rhumba, Yankee Polka, Golden Waltz and the Midnight Blues. There are three parts to ice dancing competitions. They are prescribed pattern dances, original set dances, and a free dance. The free dance allows for the greatest freedom of expression. Part of the score in competition is based on artistry and beauty. What kind of music is used in the ice dancing competion? What do ice dancers wear? The competing athletes use a wide range of musical types. They include popular, jazz, and classical music. The music is based on the type of dance that will be performed. The athletes wear cheesy outfits, very unique to the sport. Dancers on ice need to feel comfortable in their outfits but they need the clothing to accent their graceful moves and flowing steps. The outfits are designed with this in mind. Women must wear dresses or skirts, pants are not allowed. Men must wear full length trousers. These outfits mimic the look of ballroom dancers. All the costumes are made of colorful fabrics with sequins and sparkles.

Do you like the Olympics and dancing? Did you ever imagine dancing on ice? Then ice dancing is your kind of sport. You will see amazing moves on ice. If we were judges we know it would be hard to pick the winners! Each team of ice dancers (a man and a woman) must do four dances. Two of those dances are the same for all the ice dancers. They are called the compulsory dances and are worth 10 percent of their score. The other two dances are the original dance and the free dance. The original dance is worth 30 percent of their score and the free dance is worth 50 percent. At the 2002 Olympics the dancers will create their own original dance but they must use a Spanish medley provided to all the dancers. In the free dance the ice dancers are allowed to create their own steps to whatever music they choose. The ice dancers are judged on the dancer's unison timing, expression and accuracy and placement of their dance steps. Ice dancing is a little bit like the pairs competition in figure skating but there are more thing that ice dancers can not do. Ice Dancing
Ice dancing is a relatively new international competition event. It was first included in the 1976 Olympic Games. Skating itself goes back many thousands of years. The oldest known pair of skates date to approximately 3000BC. They were discovered at the bottom of a lake in Switzerland. Holes had been burned at each end into a bone. They were most probably tied to the feet with leather straps. In the fourteenth century the Dutch made wooden platforms with flat iron runners at the bottom. People pushed themselves along using poles. This was primarily a means of transportation to allow people to go about their daily buiness. In 1848 E.W. Bushill invented the first all iron skate that could be clipped onto a boot. Ice skating only evolved into a sport during the eighteenth century. It is an aid to health in that it is relaxing and good cardio-vascular excercise. Ice skating originated in Vienna at the end of the ninteenth century. It was popularized by a man called Jackson Haines who defined a style which still continues today. It made the transition from Vienna to Broadway via the Ice Follies of 1915.

During the summer of 1972, my brother, Billy Schneider, came to Colorado to train with the famous Carlo Fassi, who trained Peggy Fleming.
During that summer, our family visited Billy and I had a chance to skate some ice dance sessions in Denver.

Yu/Wang, from Harbin, scored 78.12 points. Their teammates, Huang Xintong/Zheng Xun finished second with 76.17, while Guan Xueting/Wang Meng, from Fushun, were third with 69.00. Yu and Wang, both wearing purple and white, danced elegant steps to James Horner's "Remember" soundtrack. "We have been trying really hard to win a gold," said Yu, who cried out when she was interviewed, adding that they hadn't won any titles for a long time. "We really hope China's ice dancing could be competitive in world arena, like the pairs events," Wang said. The couple missed the gold on the previous day. Their overall score of routine and original was not enough to beat Huang/Zheng, even though they got the highest in the original part.
