Friday Ice Climbing at Ouray
The 2008 Ouray Ice Fest officially kicked off this Thursday. The handfull of us here representin' Mountain Hardwear are excited we made the trip to Colorado once again for climbs, clinics, beer and fraternizing. MHW athletes Freddie Wilkinson, John Varco and Dawn Glanc are here with us - sharing beta, stories and Season 2 of the Sopranos on DVD. Nice. Here's a quick video we put together cataloging the scene at Ouray today. This footage might be quick and dirty, but it does offer a killer soundtrack of royalty-free music, so you know it's gonna rock! (Hey, we searched long and hard for this.) Talk to you all tomorrow... Also, BIG congratulations go out to Dawn who placed fourth out of 23 in the women's comp. Dawn will be swinging her picks in the final round tomorrow at high noon. Best of luck, Dawn!

Ouray Ice Climbing with International Mountain Guides
Ouray, located in the San Juan Range of southwestern Colorado, is one of the few locations in the lower 48 states where quality ice climbing is virtually guaranteed in the winter months. A combination of good weather (285 sunny days per year), easy access to quality climbing, and the small, picturesque resort town setting have contributed to Ouray's nickname, "Ice Climbing Capital of North America."
Seminar Highlights
These seminars are an excellent choice for those considering participation in an expedition or climb that requires confident cramponing in icy conditions. Focusing on the balance and technique necessary for climbing steep water ice gives one a real advantage on expeditions that require the ability to crampon with confidence. Upcoming IMG expeditions for which this seminar is useful training include Denali, the Wrangell/St. Elias Range, Mt. Logan, the big peaks of South America and the Himalayas. For you skiers, ice climbing is the perfect complement to a ski vacation. Telluride is just 47 miles or an hour drive away from Ouray! Bring the family skiing, then come spend a few days training with us.

Call or pick up the new South Fork ice guide "Winter Dance" at Cody's newest and most knowledgeable Mountain Shop "Core Mountain Sports" . Located in downtown Cody across from Wendys at 1019 15th street. Stop in or call for your guidebook or conditions. $29.95 (Free Shipping) Toll Free 1-877-527-7354 The small town of Cody, Wyoming is home to some of the best ice climbing in the United States. The Valley hosts the highest concentration of ice in the lower 48 states. The season begins as early as October and can run into the long sunny days of April. Cody attracts a small group of climbers each year. Steep approaches, long routes, and untouched ice will leave the average climber whipped by the end of the day. There is only a handful of locals that make up the ice climbing community, and they tell tales of WI3 feeling like WI5. The early and late season climbs will not be found in a guidebook. Checking with the locals is a must!

Ice Climbing
Not long ago the general perception was that Adirondack winters were to be endured, not enjoyed, but due to advances in gear and clothing, ice climbing is surging in popularity. Unlike snow conditions that tend to fluctuate from year to year, Adirondack ice reliably begins to take shape in late November and stays true to form throughout the month of March. We include all technical gear including double plastic boots. Clients meet at our lodge at 8:30 a.m. and lunches are provided for all non-group sessions. We recommend dressing in layers including wool or synthetics, shelled gloves, wool mitts and socks, a wool hat and some form of an outer shell layer. We also recommend that people bring a large daypack, water bottle/thermos , ski goggles and camera if desired. Winter days can be cold so please prepare accordingly! As with our Rock Climbing program ice guiding/instruction will be offered mostly through Private Guiding but for those that prefer a less expensive, more social alternative we will continue to offer a

Múlafjall in Hvalfjörður
Múlafjall is the best and most popular ice climbing area close to Reykjavík. It is a 2-3 km (1.5-2 mi) long cliff face high up from the road. Climbers call the most popular part of the cliff “Leikfangaland” or “Toy Land”. In Múlafjall there are dozens of routes of all grades, most of them single pitch. There are many unclimbed mixed routes here, as well. It’s easy to get to the bottom of the cliff and there are a number of safe routes from which you can walk back down from the top. Múlafjall is usually climbable between November and March. It is located at the bottom of Hvalfjörður on the southern side. The area is about 50km (30 mi) from Reykjavík. You can get there by any type of car. Just watch out that the roads may be very slippery in Hvalfjörður. In fact you may experience very slippery roads anywhere in Iceland in winters time. Shortly before driving over a bridge at the bottom of the fjord, park your car on the unmarked lay-by. The routes are at approximately 300m (975 ft) elevation and the walk up takes about 20 minutes.
