Ice Climbing
In the spectrum of mountain sports, ice climbing must rank fairly high. The demands on the practitioner can be enormous. Physical strength, endurance, technique and organisation are only part of the story. These skills must be married with sound mountaineering judgement, avalanche and weather awareness, navigation skills and the ability to function to a high level over a long day. But the key point is ?Ice Climbing is tremendous fun!?. Scotland is undeniably the premier location in the British Isles for ice climbing, a fact born out by the number of providers operating in the Scotland during the winter months.

Ice Climbing in Alaska
Anyone adventure traveler who has ever wanted to visit Alaska wants to do three thing; go dog sledding, visit Denali National Park, and go ice climbing. Sure there are tons of other amazing things to do in Alaska, but these three things are some of the most popular. Lucky for you, all of these things are easy to do.
The summer months are a great time to try your hand ice climbing. The Matanuska Glacier has especially favorable climbing conditions this time of year. This area of Alaska lets you get started in Ice Climbing even if you have no prior experience climbing or trekking. There are a number of climbing guides in the area who can help you the art and technical side of ice climbing. Many beginner tours tend to be in the 6 hour range. Instructions start off with safety speeches and then cover the gear, how it works, and some basic techniques. Many of your tours will start out on easy to moderate ice slopes. As the day moves on, so will your challenges. You’ll be given the opportunity to increase the difficulty of your climbs and try your hand at some more advanced ice climbs. If by chance you are traveling with a group you are likely to get a discount from many of the ice climbing tour guides. But, if you are travelling alone you aren’t out of luck. Many of the tour companies will offer you private ice climbing lesson at a slightly increased price. Some even have group climbs

There is perhaps no other discipline of alpinism that offers such a satisfying feeling as sinking your crampons and ice tools into a vertical pillar of ice. Ice climbing began in the U.S. in the late 1960's. Since it's modest beginnings, ice climbing has evolved and increased in popularity in large part due to significant equipment innovations. In a word, ice climbing is Fun!

The Basics
Ice climbing takes many forms. The basic principle is to ascend some form of frozen water using ice axes and crampons. This may be compacted ice on a cliffs north face, very compacted ice on glaciers, or frozen, near vertical, waterfalls and water seepages from cliff sides.
  • Steep ice peace of mind. Leading steep ice is a lot easier if the mind riot can be quelled. Towards this end, placing pro quickly helps immensely. Here are some tips: Get a secure tool placement, and hang straight-armed from the arm that won't place the gear. With the arm that will place the gear, have, or get, a tool placement around the head to chest level. Take your hand out of the leash to place the gear; Clipping a quickdraw to the tool and then to your rope may help you stay calm, and doesn't slow you down greatly (it may even catch a slip). Place the gear. If it's a screw, it's often easier to place it at mid-waist level.

Welcome to the Icehome
Here it comes: a guide to selected ice climbing locations in the French and Italian Alps. This area is one of the most well known and accessible winter playgroung in the entire world, and every iceclimber should come over here at least once in a lifetime. Since there are litterally thousands of icefalls sparse along the Alps, this guide cannot be a complete list of sites, and in most cases it cannot offer the complete list of climbs of each site. However you will find a great deal of informations, pictures and detailed descriptions on the best and most representative climbs of the area. As of today the guide includes detailed descriptions of 58 icefalls plus essential indications on 72 more climbs, for a total of over 17450 meters of climbing (on February 26, 1997). Whenever I add new climbs to the guide these numbers are updated: check here to see if there is any new material. Hopefully this compilation of general informations will be useful for any ice climber that wants to pay a visit in some of the best cold spots of the western Alps. All the infos here are based on my personal knowledge and on friends and other ice-surfers contributions. The project was started in late fall 1995 and it will gradually growth and extend its scope in the years to come.

Boots
Plastic boots offer warmth and dryness that you can't get from leather boots. Plastic boots have molded notches in the toes and heels to allow attachment of step-in crampons, as well. Their rigid structures make them well suited to vertical ice as they provide the support your feet need for front-pointing. For cold, steep, technical climbs, they are usually the preferred way to go. Leather mountaineering boots, on the other hand, allow ankles to flex, which is more comfortable for extended French technique used in alpine ice climbing.
