Ice Climbing NPS photo by Ed Lasich Ice curtains near Sand Point Road Ice climbing is becoming a popular winter sport within the Lakeshore. With ample lake effect snow, numerous waterfalls, porous sandstone cliffs, and the water which seeps out of the rock layers, curtains and columns of ice are common.
Snow and ice are generally present by the second or third week in December and remain until late March. While ice frequently forms along the Pictured Rocks cliffs above Lake Superior, these areas are not recommended for climbing due to hazardous exposure to the lake.
The most accessible ice columns are found along the Pictured Rocks escarpment between Munising Falls and Sand Point along Sand Point Road.

A Growing Sport Understanding Water Ice Ratings Hot Spots for Cool Ice Mountaineering Guides
A Growing Sport First, a big caveat: if you're interested in ice climbing but have never tried it, please don't venture out on your own. This isn't a "learn it as you go " sport. You need to master the proper techniques and safety precautions, and training is absolutely essential. If you can find a climbing club in your area, call them and ask about beginners' courses. Barring that, call your local outdoor sports shop; chances are, someone will be able to point you in the right direction. Ice climbing is still a relatively young sport, but in recent years it's been gaining popularity. Advances in gear and exposure on programs such as ESPN's "X Games" have started a snowball effect; more and more people are heeding the call of wild ice.

The spammers are getting almost as bad as government. 17 October, 2004: The high tech rotating nozzle was supposed to keep working. Well, the ice built up. The nozzle stopped rotating. It got a little top heavy. Actually, a lot top heavy. Then all the ice broke off the pole, and ripped the pipe down with the ice. So we made an amusing array of nozzles to spray water in various directions, and put it part way up the pole. Below are the amusing arrays of brass hose barb nozzles, which evolved. The nozzles were cut, bent, twisted, broken and mangled in highly engineered manners to create artistic spray patterns. Each of these off-the-shelf pipe fitting arrays were much less expensive than commercial multi nozzle heads. From left to right...

CONTACT Event Sponsors: Supporting Sponsors: Welcome to the Canmore Ice Climbing Festival December 5 - 7, 2008 The Canmore Ice Climbing Festival is now into it's tenth year! Highlights from the 9th Annual Arc'teryx CICF Yamnuska Mountain Adventures was proud to once again be the Presenting Sponsor for this year's festival over the Dec. 7-9 weekend. Yam and a crew of volunteers built, supervised and supported the ice climbing wall in Centennial Park right in the middle of Canmore. There were also various specialty clinics that ranged from the "Intro to Basic Ice" weekend to the "Advanced Mixed Clinic" with the man who wrote the book on the sport, Sean Isaac. Over 250 people tried the public ice climbing wall over the weekend. A particularly vivid image was recounted by Andrew Stevens from Yam. "One afternoon a school bus pulled up and people poured out. They went straight to the ice wall - kids, adults, families, and they just started climbing! It was impressive!" As o ne climber enthused, "I loved being in the mountains during the Canmore Ice Festival. There were lots of ice climbers and there was a sense of celebration everywhere you went. The weekend slide shows were standing room only, which reflects on the caliber of Will Gadd, Sean Isaac and Barry Blanchard, the presenters. Even though it was really cold during the weekend, it didn't take away from the warmth of the festival."

New Routes in Wyalusing Eric Landmann This being a banner year, the local boys are out on the ice. After last winter, which saw the Main Route at Wyalusing dry as a bone, without a single scrap of ice, this year is a bonanza. Jerry Wingenter and friends put up a new WI3 route called Can o Beans, between the Wyalusing Main Route and Ice Hobo. Keeping with the hobo theme, maybe we should rename the Main Route to "Mainliner"? It's a strange year at Wyalusing, as the Main Route is not very fat, but there are several new routes sprouting nearby. In the quarry, Matt Weaver and friends put up Eagle Eyes , a big, fat, vertical column of ice at the far right of the quarry. This route had never formed before. It looks to be about a WI4+. Congratulations everybody!

Download the Rjukan Ice - A Summary Guide here

In December 2005 a new guide to the Rjukan area "Heavy Water" was published by Rockfax (see the links page). The guide is written by Jon Haukåssveen and Tom Atle Bordevik and is in the classic Rockfax format with descriptions of 171 icefalls and mixed routes and plenty of colour photographs. This guide is recommended as the perfect companion when visiting the area, well done Jon and Tom!
For those of you eager for more information straight away, you can download the guide above and then read on...
Getting To Rjukan
Rjukan is located 175 km west of Oslo, 370 km east of Stavanger, 290 km east of Haugesund and 175 km from Larvik. You can sail to Stavanger from the UK and to Kristiansand, Larvik or Oslo from Denmark. However, the quickest option is to fly to Oslo or Haugesund, then possibly take the direct bus from Oslo (see the links page) or hire a car. You will need a car to get around the area if you do not want to be limited to the routes close to the town centre. The vast majority of the routes are all within 20 km of the town. Rjukan is located on the main road number 37 in a deep narrow valley, in fact the town doesn't see the sun for 4 months of the year. A few kilometers west of the town, the valley narrows to a deep canyon - Maristjuvet. This is where the famous power plant Vemork is located - and most of the best routes. Be sure to see the film Heroes of Telemark before you visit.

Welcome to Southforkice.com
The Valley

The South Fork ice climbing is like NO other ice in the Northern Rockies. The Valley has literally hundreds of frozen waterfalls each year. Many climbers visit the Valley season after season and still haven't climbed many of the waterfalls here. Climbers leave here experiencing one of the largest concentrations of frozen waterfalls they have seen and climbed in the lower 48, returning home to tell others about this beautiful area, which is increasing the interest here on the South Fork each season. Since the days of the local pioneers, the Valley has been explored to find innumerable waterfalls identified, climbed and rated WI3-7.
Southforkice.com is an informational website to tell you about our Annual "Waterfall Ice Roundup" each Presidents Day weekend in February. We enjoy the many that attend each year that keep coming back to enjoy this magnificent, friendly and exciting place. The Valley has mountaintops that rise over 11,400 feet allowing for the vertical ice season to start as early as October and last through April. A special thanks to my family, climbing partners, Roundup participants, the Double Diamond X Ranch, event sponsors, local outfitters and air pilots for each year helping in the continued success of southforkice.com.
