Jump to: navigation search Ice Climbing , as the term indicates, is the activity of ascending inclined ice formations. Usually, though, ice climbing refers to roped and protected climbing of features such as icefalls , frozen waterfalls , and cliffs and rock slabs covered with ice refrozen from flows of water. Ice climbing is broadly divided into two spheres, alpine ice and water ice. Alpine ice is found in a mountain environment, usually requires an approach to reach, and is often climbed in an attempt to summit a mountain. Water ice is usually found on a cliff or other outcropping beneath water flows. Alpine ice is frozen precipitation where as water ice is a frozen liquid flow of water. Both types of ice vary greatly in consistency according to weather conditions. Ice can be soft, hard, brittle or tough

For example, on flat ice, almost any good hiking or mountaineering boot will usually suffice, but for serious ice climbing double plastic mountaineering boots (or their older stiff leather equivalent) are usually used, which must be crampon compatible and stiff enough to support the climber and maintain ankle support. On short, low angled slopes, one can use an ice axe to chop steps. For longer and steeper slopes or

From: Pete Atkinson Why ice climb? well apart from the fact that i get a huge buz out of being scared shitless most of the time, its because its so so beautiful. The most blistful day i have ever had was on smiths route belaying in the cave, with a fringe of icicles, drowning me in a rainbow of light. Its nature at its rawest, a route is never the same route, it changes in character everytime it is climbed. What worked on the lead, may not be their for the second. It is total commitment. And the fun dont stop there either! Oh that long slide back down No4 gully!!!! I have never met more sane a group of climbers than ice climbers!!!

Welcome
Welcome to the Ouray Ice Park - The Park is 100% open and operating for the 2007/2008 season. After a slow start, and an unusually warm November, , December and January brought almost 5 weeks of cold, snow, cloudy days and more snow. The areas snowpack is now way above average and routes that haven't been seen in 20 years are now the norm!! If you have'nt made it down to Southwestern Colorado yet this winter you are missing out. See you soon!! Located in the Uncompahgre Gorge in Ouray, Colorado, the Ouray Ice Park was opened in 1995 as the world's first park devoted exclusively to the sport of ice climbing. Climbing in the park is free. A small band of volunteers developed the Park utilizing a unique set of assets found perhaps only in Ouray. An unprecedented number of climbers visiting from around the world led to the formation of a nonprofit corporation to manage the Park. Over the past 14 years the park has grown to become the largest ice climbing park in the world. Thanks to several large donations from local private donors, the park now has reliable plumbing, a welcome center, over 200 routes and employs 5 part-time local persons. Fund raising to date has been primarily by donations and membership fees. Please consider becoming a

"We're all fucked. It helps to remember that."
George Carlin The iceclimb.com site offers information on iceclimbs and iceclimbing in North American regions (I know that Mexico and Canada haven't been added yet). There are ice festivals during the season which offer entertainment, gear and technique demonstrations, and the chance to cluster with other climbers. For those thinking about getting started , the ice festivals provide a chance to play on ice. Why? I gathered the information found on this website for my own selfish reasons: I wanted to roadtrip and climb more ice. Then I decided to share that information. I hope these pages provide enough data to get you on a great road trip, or up to more local ice. Your comments and questions are almost always welcome (send them to will at iceclimb dot com).

The Black Diamond Viper Ice Tool Review
The Viper is my choice of ice climbing tools due to its balanced weight, curved shaft and smaller grip. The Viper excels at steep water ice and technical mixed rock and ice routes. The tool is fully modular, meaning it can be use with any Black diamond leash, converted to an hammer or an adze, and can be modified to be used leashless. Avalanche Education
Every year, many skiers and climbers sustain serious injuries or die in backcountry avalanches. Avalanches happen in every mountain range, in the backcountry and within the boundries of ski areas. The best way to avoid becoming a statistic is to educate yourself with an Avalanche Level 1 class. LOST ICE TOOL - REWARD On October 1, my partner dropped (!) his ice tool when we were just below the chockstone on the North (Moynier) Couloir of Mt. Thompson in the Sierra Nevada. He's sentimentally attached to it.
The axe is FKW Stubai, with tubular adze. The adze is taped up with climbers tape to deaden the sound. It is purple in color, 50 cm about 15 years old with SIMOND (?) "TRACK UP" sling. The pick is Stubai FKW 150 (he believes) which is precursor to present day banana picks. He will pay $40 as a reward if found. It is my belief that it is about sixty feet above the bergschrund on the right side, resting on a minor debris ledge in the snow/ice. This is only a guess based on what I saw from a distance as we descended. We could not consider the time and energy to recover it.
Please contact me if found. THANKS for your help.

Michael
