Muso Shinden Iai Movies
January 23, 2005: Updated. These days the network becomes much faster and broader, movie encoding techniques becomes much smarter, and I checked and noticed that we still have many downloads from this page, so I decided to provide the complete full length movie (about 20minutes, 187079894bytes, DivX 5.2.1 encoded avi file). QuickTime movies are also available at the old page June 9, 2001: Updated. Converted the movie format to Microsoft MPEG-4 v2. Now you can download the movies much faster. Almost all Iai schools were derived from a common mythological founder, named Jushin (or Shigenobu, HAYASHIZAKI Jinsuke, etc). Muso Shinden is also one of the successors of Jushin style. HAYASHIZAKI Shigenobu appeared circa 1560 - 1570, devised some forms of sword-drawing arts (i.e., Batto Jutu, an alternative Japanese name of Iai) for the first time. We would regard Iai as a dance, a sport, or a spiritual training, but until recently it has been a real technique for assasination, or defence from opponents, characterized by the sudden and quick manipulation of the sword. We know that today's Iai styles have been modified a lot since it was first established. Also the commercial movies, TV shows, comics, dramas, and street performance could be the source of our confusion and misunderstanding. You (Foreigners as well as Japanese) hear some times before that the Japanese martial arts are based on manners and etiquettes, starting with respect and ending also with respect. But at least in the days of the Civil Wars, rudeness was a more preferable virtue than such politeness.

I aido is the art of drawing and cutting with the Japanese sword. It is one of many martial arts that the Samurai studied. Classes consist of traditional katas from the Daito Mushin Ryu, Tameshigeri (cutting practice) and related training with wooden weapons, including bokken (wooden sword), wakisashi (short sword), tanto (dagger), nito-ryu (two swords), jo (short staff) and variations against one another.
Philosophy
  • A false sword builds a false spirit. Weapons training is essential. You must not be a danger to yourself or others.
Swords used in the study of Daito Mushin Ryu are live blades, meaning they are sharp. In the past, only Shinken, true hand forged Japanese swords, were allowed. Today some flexibility has been introduced due to the increasing cost and limited availibility of Shinken. Modern blades must be approved by the Iaido Sensei. Generally speaking, you must train with a sword that you respect. The use of bokken is allowed in lieu of a live blade. In this instance one is not pretending that they are using a live blade, but are being honest about what they are training with.

    Iaido/Iaijutsu
Iai is considered a classical bujutsu or budo. It is more difficult to characterize iai, as the student progresses the -do aspects are left behind and the -jutsu aspects become more pronounced. Iai is believed to have its origins about 1200 AD, with about 800 ryu cataloged since then. It is possible that the present art of iai had its origins in an ancient reference to "tachi-gake" from about 1000 AD. Iai is differentiated from the ken styles in that the sword is initailly at rest in the scabbard instead of already drawn for combat. Iai is composed of drawing the sword (nukitsuke), bringing it to combative use in minimum time, and returning the sword to the saya (scabbard). Starting positions for iai can be from combative postures or from everyday setting or standing positions. Traditional gi are worn as in kenjutsu. Advancement can be either in the traditional method, without dan and kyu, or can include it similar to kendo. Iai within the Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei is ranked, and several instructor credentials are also available; called renshi, kyoshi and hanshi, which are also available in kendo. The reason for the kendo federation having oversight of iaido is quite simple. Early this century, kendo practioners were aware that kendo was not properly teaching the sword. A shinai is not a Nihon-to (Japanese sword) and does not handle like a sword. Kendo did retain ten kata as a part of their promotion process, but they were felt to be insufficient to properly teach the "way of the sword."

IAI-DO The art of Drawing a Sword
Iaido (ee-eye-doe), a derivative of Japanese Kenjutsu (swordsmanship techniques), is the study of drawing the sword, cutting, and returning it to its scabbard, all with a minimum of exertion. The essence of iaido, a non-combative discipline practiced for an individual's spiritual cultivation, is much different than its forerunner, Iaijutsu. Iaijutsu is also a sword-drawing art practiced with combative applications being stressed during training. THE SAMURAI SWORD "I feel that every man on earth has something to contribute to the subject which he loves, and I can say without any remorse that I have a love affair with the Japanese sword."
....Darrell Craig, IAI The Art of Drawing the Sword The Samuri sword has long been considered as the symbol of the spirit of old Japan. It is said to be the embodiment of the Samurai's code, the expression of his steel discipline, unswerving devotion, and peerless skill. It is the product of the sword makers of Japan and a result of a life devoted to the perfection of their craft, the Samurai sword is indeed a beautiful work of art as well as a formidable weapon. Iaido is practiced today as an aid to self-discipline, improved coordination, and for the sake of posterity. In most styles of iaido the actual cutting techniques are valid, but the practice of iai for defense or war is no longer necessary in modern times. Training to deal with a surprise attack, with a minimum of exertion while defending oneself, however, can easily be seen to be a worthwile pursuit for the sake of day-to-day dealings with others. With iaido the physical and mental benefits are available to all practitioners, regardless of that person's martial arts background, if any.

This attribution occurs in the footpath of forges of the swords that were the historic centre of the martial arts in this country. The importance of IAI Iaido is the art of unsleeving, cut, perforate and defend with the Japanese sword, in various situations, against an opponent. While seated, stand, walking and being attacked from all sides, the fencing man must anticipate, defend and retaliate. IAI focus the attack and the defence in terms as the distance, the centre of the blow and the grasping of the sword. United with this must follow the spirit of interception of the adversary attack in a harmonious form, leading to its psychological defeat. This is the true self-defence. The IAI True Spirit More important than the technique is the spiritual training. The IAI does not mean to cut the enemy, but to won oneself. The victory in IAI is a heart without revenge feelings and the stop of the conflict without using the sword. This explains why the IAI of the old times was called saya-no-uchi, invincibility without using the sword.

    about Iaido
Iaido is a traditional Japanese martial art derived from the ancient sword schools of the samurai. The iaido student uses a katana (Japanese sword) or an iaito (practice blade) to perform a series of forms which re-create real-life sword encounters. These forms have been passed on from teacher to student in an uninterrupted transmission for, in some cases, over 500 years. Iaido is a solitary practice. That is, the opponent exists only in the mind's eye, and the student must precisely conform his movements to those of this imaginary attacker. This type of vigilant form practice develops powerful concentration and a strong sense of one's centre. Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido, was one of the greatest swordsmen of the 20th century, and many of the underlying principles of Aikido are informed by Japanese swordmanship. Some have said that aikido is like the actions of a gifted swordsman when he is weaponless. We at Pacific Coast Aikikai find that Iaido practice gives us a deeper understanding of Aikido, and thus helps lay the foundation for deep and mindful life-long training. Daniel Kempling is a certified teacher of the Tesso-kai Batto-ho school of Iaido and Aikido-related weapons work, headed by Master teacher, T.K. Chiba. Included in this body of work are the traditional forms of Omori-ryu, Shindo Munen Ryu and Hasegawa Eishin Ryu.
