Iaido and Bokken Training Iaido Iaido encompasses the study of the Japanese swordsmanship, using a two handed sword known as a Katana. Sensei Fred Bateman studied the system called Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu and had the pleasure of being instructed by the 19th Generation Hanshi and holder of the Menkyo Kaiden in both Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu and Tanimura-Ha of that ryu. His name was Kaicho Iwata Norikazu. As part of the Kobudo school sensei Bateman is able to pass on his knowledge in iaido. However, he stresses that to study the system to its full potential, that is beyond the physical mechanics of manipulating the sword and expanding self-knowledge in the study of iaido, the student needs to train in the system on a full time basis thus perfecting the art in its own right. Nevertheless the kobudo student needs to have an understanding of the concepts of the sword and its use in order to defend against it. Therefore, sensei Bateman has incorporated lessons of iaido and bokken into the students' studies. In order to train in iaido a student must eventually obtain an iaito (training sword), but can start some techniques using the bokken (wooden sword). Both these weapons can be obtained through sensei Bateman (please enquire). A link to the sword catalogue can be found on the Links page.

Posted December 21st, 2007 by Bjoern in The year 2007 has proven to be an interesting one, seeing a lot of up’s and down’s for Iaido in Ireland. The biggest problem that Iaido in Ireland is facing is the amount of students actually attending classes. After a very good start in spring we faced the typical summer holiday breakdowns but unfortunately have not really recovered since. This leaves us in the unique situation that we have sometimes more teachers then students attending the class. Having still in mind the screams of Iaidoka missing instructors in 2006 and their willingness to go wherever a teacher would be, this seems to have been more lip service then reality. Is it really all about the location, the winter and the time as people say? I would like to encourage people to let us know why they can not make it to training as we for sure will continue to grow and support Iaido in Ireland.

What is Iaido?
Iaido, the way of the sword, is a martial art form that began as an off-shoot of kenjutsu. It was developed as a defensive method to counter surprise attacks and enemy raids in fifteenth and sixteenth century Japan. The purpose of iaido was to slay an opponent with one stroke of the sword immediately after unsheathing it. In order to create such a defense system, situations and circumstances of surprise attacks were studied to devise a systematized way to use the sword effectively against many forms of attack. The practice of this martial art requires a solemn spirit, extreme concentration, and skill. Every motion, such as the movements of the arms or legs and body, must correspond to the offensive motions of the opponent, and it is of utmost importance that a person follow the rules of discipline that have been carefully and thoroughly applied. The secret to iaido is a calm spirit. With a tranquil heart you put your hand on the hilt of your sword - in a split second your hand moves to cut down the opponent and resheath the sword - then return to your composed mind. A serene spirit must be cultivated at all times. It is said that the sword is like the mind, and if the sword is upright, the mind is upright. But if the mind is not upright, the sword can never be wielded properly.
