Field Sports Created: 30th September 2005 Hurling - Irish Field Sport Contact Us Like this page? Send it to a friend! Hurling is one of Ireland's most popular ball games. It resembles the game of field hockey but with very different rules. It is, in fact, a well-organised, physical game which requires a lot of skill to play properly and is regarded as one of the fastest field games in the world. The Basics Hurling, like hockey and football , has a simple objective: to score a 'goal'. This is done by hitting the small hurling ball, or sliotar into the opposing team's net. Failing that, teams will settle for a 'point', which is scored by hitting the ball directly over the goal's cross-bar. A goal is worth three points, so the overall aim is to collect as many points as possible before the game ends. Each match is divided into halves of 35 minutes aside Equipment Each player has a hurley , which is a flat ash stick, about 1.3 metres long with a wide, flat end. It's like a hockey stick, only lighter and with a broader hitting surface. The other end of the stick is fashioned into a grip and may be wound with an absorbent fabric to improve handling. In addition to the jersey, shorts and boots, players often wear shin-guards, a hand-guard and a helmet

Wired News just published my latest video-game column , and this one is about physical sports. It's got an an interesting pedigree. A while ago, I was chatting with Hasan Elahi, an art professor at Rutgers University (I was actually interviewing him for an upcoming story I've written about him for Wired magazine.) I mentioned to Elahi that I'm fascinated by game design, and wondered idly why in an age where video-game design is flowering there's almost no-one designing new physical sports. Elahi informed me that one of his grad students, Tom Russotti, actually was designing new sports, and he put me in touch with him. Ta da : A few months later, I hooked up with Russotti in Prospect Park here in Broolyn, where I got a chance to play one of his new sports! (That video above is a record of our spastic game: I'm the guy in the jeans who appears in the first scene.) Interestingly, this column highlights the dirty secret about my

    Hurling
by Joe Gould Print Page Email to Friend The Irish regard soggy mist as an old friend. Unfortunately, the mist that's hanging like a veil over Cusack Park today is a bit of a bitch. And for the 30 men crowding the playing field in the small town of Ennis (just north of Limerick), the dampness changes everything about the game they're playing, making the fist-sized ball they're used to tossing about seem like a greased trout they have to struggle to control. Not that the players or the thousands of riotous, screaming fans in the stands even notice. After all, this is no typical game of football, basketball, or soccer. It's hurling, the national sport of Ireland. And regardless of just how bad the weather gets, the game will go on today just as it has for thousands of years. And that's why MF For those not familiar with the sport, just imagine a game of lacrosse played with a short hockey stick (called a hurley) and a baseball (or sliothar), and you'll have a pretty good idea of how game play progresses.

Ros Glas Hurling Club
Ros Glas Hurling Club. Founded in 1974.
Welcome to Ros Glas Hurling Club Web Site.
The Ros Glas club was founded in 1974. It was founded on the basis of the Community Games, which was strong in Monasterevin at the time. The club at the beginning started with two teams under 14 and under 16 football and was parish based and drew its players from the Parish of Monasterevin and the surrounding areas. Hurling was introduced through the CBS Boys Primary School. The club catered for both Football andHurling at under age level and was most successful at both codes. The football clubs took over the running of under age football which left Ros Glas just catering for Hurling. With the success of the underage teams at hurling it was then decided to enter an adult team in the Kildare championship and leagues. To the surprise of longer formed clubs in the County and Ros Glas it self they won the Junior Championship in 1983 and then again in 1986. The big win was in 1984 when for the first time in history that a Minor Hurling team brought silver ware to the Parish of Monasterevin when they won both Championship and League. The club went from success to success to the present day.

Hurling
T his one of the traditional Gaelic sports, played mainly in Ireland. Irish mythology has tales of legendary heroes who were expert hurlers. The modern game has several similarities to Gaelic football, with the same number of players (15), similar goals and scoring. However, in hurling, the ball or 'sliotar' is about 25cm in circumference and can only be moved across the pitch using the 'hurley' stick. The latter is about 1m long, ending with an 8cm, curved blade. The sliotar can be taken off the hurley, prior to hitting it, but cannot be picked up by hand from the ground. Points are scored when the sliotar is hurled between the posts, scoring 1 point above the cross bar or 3 points into the net below the crossbar History of Hurling See also Wikipedia Milwaukee Hurling Club
The sport is still controlled by the Gaelic Athletic Association . There are limited associations outside Ireland, but South Australia and North America have active hurling responsibilities and give links to clubs

Last year we were the first every University Hurling club to represent Britain in an All-Ireland competition. Hurling is a sport similar to hockey, in that, it is played with a small ball and a curved wooden stick. It is Europe's oldest field game and officially the fastest field game in the entire world with close links to the Scottish game of Shinty, played in some of this country’s North and Westerly regions. We have found that in recent years, we are the most developed club in the British Universities competition; however we need enthusiastic playing members to further this progression!

Ron Paul Hates You
by phenry
Tue Jun 05, 2007 at 04:34:14 PM PST
Daily Kos is very definitely not the place you'd expect to see a lot of fulminating praise for right-wing conservatives. Yet the diaries are full of people who can't find enough nice things to say about Rep. Ron Paul, whose smiling face is at this moment being beamed to America from the site of the Republican debate in New Hampshireafter which, we may be sure, we will see yet another round of diaries brimming with joy about Paul's sweet words against the Iraq war. You, dear reader, may even be considering writing one or more such diaries yourself. Before you do, fellow Democrat, please understand just one thing: Your affection for Paul is far from mutual. Through his words, his actions, and his votes in Congress, he has made one thing abundantly clear over the decades: Ron Paul hates you. By building him up, by supporting him, by taking him seriously, you are not driving a wedge into the heart of the Republican Partyyou are only giving him a helping hand along the road to his goal of destroying just about everything you stand for.
