Strange bridegroom-hurling ceremony takes place in Niigata town
Participants shout "One, two, three!" as they hurl a newly married man over the edge of a snowy ledge during the ceremony in Tokamachi, Niigata, on Jan. 15. TOKAMACHI, Niigata Residents in the Matsunoyama district of Tokamachi celebrated the marriage of local women in a recent lunar new year ceremony that has continued for centuries by throwing the bridegrooms over a 5-meter-high snowy ledge. The ceremony started about 300 years ago, reportedly as an act of revenge on men from outside the village who married local women. The ceremony targets bridegrooms who married local women during the previous year. One of the bridegrooms to be thrown over the ledge on Jan. 15 was a 33-year-old researcher from Tokyo's Katsushika-ku, who emerged covered in snow. His 31-year-old wife was waiting for him when he landed. "I caught my husband at the bottom and our love deepened," she said, smiling. "I want to make our family one with lots of children."

Hurling, Ireland
Hurling isn't what the Irish do when they've had too much Guinness (well, not always). It's actually a mad kind of aerial hockey invented to make the English feel embarrassed about tiggy-touchwood soccer. If you haven't had the twisted pleasure of seeing this example of man's inhumanity to man, head to the Emerald Isle - but keep your head down. This 15-century-old activity pulls no punches. A hurling match is perhaps the fastest spectator sport in the world (with only ice hockey matching it for up-close frenzy). From a distance it resembles a roaming pack-fight between men with thin pale legs and names like Liam and Sean. At ground level it's much more frightening, a kind of 15-a-side escape from the asylum. Hurling is rapid, breakneck and rambunctious. The game moves too fast for the novice to understand anything but the most basic rules, but you can start by imagining an egg-and-spoon race with a pack of enormous angry stick-wielding roosters charging the leader. The aim is to hurtle a pellet-hard ball called a sliotar into goals using a stick with a paddle at its end ( hurley ). The players balance the sliotar on their hurley and then run, hit or bounce it forward, sometimes with all limbs attached.

Gaelic Football, Hurling are Irish Passions
Brian Handwerk
for National Geographic News
Updated March 17, 2003 Come March 17, many Americans and other people around the world will don green clothes, dine on corned beef and cabbage, and quench their thirst with a pint of Guinness Stout. Such rituals are part of the annual St. Patrick's Day celebration of all things Irish.
But how many of us will thrill to the grace of an athlete as he hurls the sliothar into the net for the winning goal? Or cheer battling footballers as they hand-pass and kick their way up the pitch? Email to a Friend RELATED "It's ingrained in my nature as an Irishman," said John Keane of the Gaelic Athletic Association's North American Board. "It's a tremendously important part of my heritage. (As a child) you spoke Gaelic, enjoyed the Irish music and dancing, and you played the games." While the sports are an integral part of Ireland's national heritage, he noted, their organization also makes them sources of intense local pride. Teams represent Ireland's counties, and players must have family connections to, or live and work in, the counties they represent (most players have second jobs). The free-agency system familiar to North American sports fans does not exist. "This really makes you passionate about your team, because they really do represent you," Keane said.
