The earliest known recorded game of hurling is from times before Christ. The game, played primarily in Ireland , is arguably the world's fastest field team sport in terms of game play. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games , it shares a number of features with Gaelic football , such as the field and goals, number of players, and much terminology. There is a similar game for women called camogie The object of the game is for players to use a wooden axe-shaped stick called a hurley (in Irish a "cam¡n", pronounced kam-awn), or a hurl , to hit a small ball called a sliotar (pronounced slitt-er) between the opponents' goalposts either over the crossbar for one point, or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for one goal, which is equivalent to three points.

All About Hurling
Hurling is a game similar to hockey, in that it is played with a small ball and a curved wooden stick. It is Europe's oldest field game. When the Celts came to Ireland as the last ice age was receding, they brought with them a unique culture, their own language, music, script and unique pastimes. One of these pastimes was a game now called hurling. It features in Irish folklore to illustrate the deeds of heroic mystical figures and it is chronicled as a distinct Irish pastime for at least 2,000 years. The stick, or "hurley" (called camán in Irish) is curved outwards at the end, to provide the striking surface. The ball or "sliothar" is similar in size to a hockey ball but has raised ridges. Hurling is played on a pitch approximately 137m long and 82m wide. The goalposts are the same shape as on a rugby pitch, with the crossbar lower than a rugby one and slightly higher than a soccer one. You may strike the ball on the ground, or in the air. Unlike hockey, you may pick up the ball with your hurley and carry it for not more than four steps in the hand. After those steps you may bounce the ball on the hurley and back to the hand, but you are forbidden to catch the ball more than twice. To get around this, one of the skills is running with the ball balanced on the hurley To score, you put the ball over the crossbar with the hurley or under the crossbar and into the net by the hurley for a goal, the latter being the equivalent of three points.

3. The Game Of Hurling.
Introduction to the rules and history of hurling.
http://www.iol.ie/~coolmine/typ/gaa/introhur.html
The Game of Hurling.
Hurling is one of the fastest and most skilful field games in the world. It is an ancient Gaelic sport, played long before the coming of Christianity. The earliest written record of the game is contained in the Brehon Laws of the fifth century. The first great hurling hero was Setanta whose legendary adventures are known to most Irish children. The game was banned by the Statutes of Kilkenny because of its popularity with the Normans. The 18th century was known as the 'golden age' of hurling. Landlords promoted the game; inter-barony and inter-county games were played. These matches were very well organised; teams lined out in set positions (21 a-side) and the behaviour of each player was controlled by a strict code of honour. Events from 1790 to 1800 caused the gentry to withdraw their support for the game of hurling. This, together with the effects of the Great Famine, severely damaged the development of the game. A successful revival of hurling commenced in 1884 with the founding of the G.A.A. The Gaelic games are organised on a local level - the parish being the basic unit of organisation. Hence, the national games have become interwined with community spirit and local pride.

FAILTE - "Welcome"
In Australasia and indeed wherever Gaelic football is played [Ireland, Nth America, Canada, UK, Europe and Asia] Women's football is experiencing particularly strong growth. The Australasian Women's team have won the past three Gaelic Football World Cups in Dublin in 2000 and 2002 and 2005. They will defend their trophy in 2008 in Ireland. Women's Gaelic footy allows women and girls to "bend it like Beckham" but retain much of their netball and basketball skills in the one relatively non-contact field game.
Sunday is the traditional day for Gaelic games in Ireland and in winter seasons in most states in Australia this has encouraged some keen players of Saturday Soccer, Aussie Rules, Rugby, Netball etc to have a second sport on the Sunday. In Adelaide, Auckland, Wellington and Hobart a switch to summer night seasons has seen players of traditional Australian and NZ winter codes take to Gaelic as a way to keep match fit over the off-season. The 2002/03 summer season in Adelaide has seen playing numbers rise from 40 in the last winter season of 1999 to near 750. Whether you're out from Ireland for a year or two, come to stay or whatever your ethnic background -Aboriginal, Maori, Papuan, Anglo, European, Asian, Afro, Nth or South American, Aussie or Kiwi you are welcome to come and play the all-round game of Gaelic football or even try your hand at the ancient art of Hurling. If you just want to come and have a pint of Guinness or your favourite brew and watch or join in the "craic" (good fun and socialising) then check out the nearest venues and clubs on this site.

gaelic football hurling links Have you ever wondered how football (soccer) would look like without offside?
Then try to watch the spectacular Gaelic games Hurling and Gaelic Football which set their highlights just when football (soccer) takes its time out: in the European summer. Although the two sports are also played in clubs, the highlight is the yearly All Ireland Championships for the 33 county selections.
Ireland is divided in 4 provinces Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster (which is Northern Ireland). Those are divided again into an unequal number of counties (Connacht 6, Leinster 12 (incl. Dublin), Munster 6, Ulster 9).
First the provinces determine their champions, then those play off the All Ireland Championship.
Those county rivalries are also a journey into the past for football fans, as passion more than money characterizes the games. Both sports are said to be very old, the championships in today's form more than 100 years.

From the hard work of the founding three members, establishing a hurling club, recruiting, training, and promoting hurling in the St. Louis Metro Area, a premier athletic club grew and prospered! Because of their dedication and sacrifices, the club celebrated its fifth year in 2007 with over 100 members! In our brief five years, we won a Junior C Hurling Championship in 2004 and a Junior D Football Championship in 2006! The past couple years, Gaelic Football has grown to become a significant part of the club evidenced by its strong showing in the past three NACB tournaments. A great majority play both sports making us truly a Gaelic sports club. To better reflect the make up of our club which plays the two main Irish (Gaelic) sports, Hurling and Football, we change our name to the “St. Louis Gaelic Athletic Club.” Our logo adds the football prominently. Irish Hurling A True Amateur Game
The game of hurling is more than just a game it is Ireland's national passion. But to appreciate hurling, one must look beyond the mere fact that it is a sport, because it is much more. Countering the trend towards big-money professional athletics, hurling has remained strictly amateur. It is a game played purely for the fun and history of it. It is a game woven deeply into the social fabric of the Irish people. Which is amazing when one considers just how extraordinarily dangerous the game is. First, the basics. Hurling is best compared to lacrosse. Hurling is an outdoor ball-and-stick game played with fifteen players on a field larger than a soccer pitch. Whereas lacrosse is played with netted sticks, hurling is a played with a flat wooden club, and the ball is struck by swinging the stick vice flinging it as in lacrosse. Hurling players can catch and carry the ball in the hand, but can only pass it by hitting it with the stick, kicking it, or slapping it by the hand. As you can surmise from the first photo, the object is to drive the ball either into a soccer-sized goal or 'over the bar'. A goal is worth three, over the bar is worth one. The common tactic is to accumulate single points, chasing goals only when a clear opportunity presents. An average senior-league score would be about 22-18, with three-to-five goals averaged per game.

The catapult was an ancient siege machine that could hurl heavy objects or shoot arrows with great force and for considerable distances. Some catapults could throw stones weighing as much as 350 pounds for distances greater than 300 feet. The Greek Dionysius the Elder of Syracuse, who was looking to develop a new type of weapon, invented the catapult about 400 BCE. Thereafter, it became a key weapon in warfare and remained so up through mediaeval times. Two major catapults evolved from Dionysius's invention: the double-armed machine, or ballista, used for shooting arrows, and the single-armed catapult designed for hurling large objects. Although the Romans added wheels to both types of catapult for maneuverability, very little in the design of the machine changed. The reconstruction shown here is of a single-armed stone-hurling catapult, approximately two feet long and one-and-a-half feet tall. Its hurling arm is driven by a cocked, winch-pulled cord.
