There are many reasons to dislike Hostmonster.com If you have been getting "CPU Quota Exceeded" screens when trying to use ihpva.org pages, take heart. I am moving at least the pedalwiki to another provider. I have already set up an account there and I am setting up the software to support the wiki now.

I've added links the gmane.org archives on the mailing list page . If you want to read messages through a web browser or newsreader or RSS feed, follow the appropriate links there.

29 November 2007 re: mailing lists
I called the hostmonster help desk this morning and got better information. Hostmonster.com has an unadvertised limit of 500 email messages per hour. Beyond that they shut you off. Since even one received message generates more than 500 outbound messages, we would not be able to meet this requirement and support all the ihpva.org lists. Consequently I will be moving the mailing lists to http://bikelist.org/ tonight. I should be able to set up forwarding to avoid loss of any messages that you send using the old addresses.

Human-powered transport
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Human-powered transport is the transport of person(s) and/or goods using human muscle power. Like animal-powered transport , human-powered transport has existed since time immemorial in the form of walking running and swimming . Modern technology has allowed machines to enhance human-power. Although motorization has increased speed and load capacity, many forms of human-powered transport remain popular for reasons of lower cost, leisure physical exercise and environmentalism . Human-powered transport is sometimes the only type available (especially in underdeveloped or inaccessible regions), and is considered an ideal form of sustainable transportation

Human Power Vehicles - 1 (Program: "hpv")
This exercise is the first of a sequence of six programming exercises based on a common theme (which we will develop and evolve throughout the rest of the quarter) in which we wish to evaluate the performance of human powered vehicles (hpv) for land transportation. Performance refers to the steady state velocity reached versus applied human power under constant specific conditions.
Background
Human powered vehicles have captured the imagination of designers, builders, and riders all over the world, for transportation, load carrying, socializing, racing, and touring. My favorite hpv link is the International Human Powered Vehicle Association site which gives one a glimps into hpv activity throughout the world. A more general directory of cycling related websites is presented in Cycling Resources In 1992, the 200m world human powered land speed record was set by team Cheetah at 68.73mph. This record was broken by Canadian Sam Whittingham during the 2002 Human Powered Speed Championships in Battle Mountain, Nevada at 81.00mph! (This remarkable record has not been broken since - refer to the 2007 World Human Power Speed Challenge history of previous events). During the same event in 2002, Sam's wife

The event specifications direct the construction of the vehicle - including safety, dimensions, steering regulations, lighting and warning device requirements. Leading teams can complete almost 900kms in 24 hours, with advanced materials such as carbon fibre, kevlar and titanium infiltrating vehicle designs. But its not just about the cutting edge - just the opportunity to participate keeps many teams coming back year after year! The primary school event begins on the Friday on the Holden track with the teams having a mandatory rest overnight, racing for a total of 14 hours. The secondary schools race begins on the Saturday afternoon on the RACV circuit, with a practice session on the Friday night. The start of the race is actually the end of a long journey for all of the teams, many of whom have worked throughout the year to fine tune their machines and bodies for just 24 hours of racing. Entrants must: Design and build a vehicle ‘from a clean sheet’;

the future of personal transportation by Nhoj Yesdnil click on photos
The auto industry is giving us the same lies that they did in the fifties and sixties about the future of cars, but now they promise pollution free machines, hydrogen-electric computer controlled cars. They even tell us that they can put more cars on the freeway; bumper to bumper at racing speeds. Some want to fill the skys with flying cars, as if fuel could get cheaper. That sounds insane to me. PRICE OF FUEL. There are 204 million motor vehicles (140m cars) in the U.S.A. 600 million worldwide, using 40 million gallons of gasoline a day producing Carbon dioxide emissions of about 7 billion metric tons annually and shooting up because of the governments misinformation campaign about global warming.
The world population is approximately 6.5 billion now, but an extra three billion people are expected by mid-century requiring three times as much energy. Obviusly the world needs voluntary populatuion control, but that’s even less likely to happen than cheap energy. As long as petroleum prices are kept artificially low (gas tax revolts, subsidized acquisition of oil by war, denial of global warming), the post industrial world will continue it's happy addiction! Eventually we will all have to pay the price for not changing our “way of life” when it was easy!!!

To all concerned.
Thanks to everyone who helped put together the Nissan event, and to all of those who attended the event and the banquet. You all helped make the event one of the most successful competitions that the IHPVA and the HPVA have had over the 30 years since the first race in 1976.
The Nissan event was a perfect way to end the Dempsey/MacCready HPV Hour Prize competition. Who could have predicted the outcome, or who could have written a better script for the surprise ending? It was perfect. Perfect!
It was a pure pleasure for me to have been present at the first International Human Powered Speed Championships and the latest competition at the Nissan test track in Casa Grande, Arizona.
Thanks especially to Paul MacCready and Ed Dempsey for their generosity in making the Prize competition possible. And my heartfelt thanks to Al and Alice Krause for organizing the Nissan event. They did a fantastic job. And thanks again to all of you for providing three decades of fun and enthusiasm. It has been a grand 30 years.
Sincerely

Bicycles are hpv's. Many of us ride recumbent bicycles. These are bikes that the rider sits in very comfortable chair with a back. Some of us have made Kinetic Sculptures which are all terrain (including sand, water, and mud) hpv's. These days the most active members have saddled them selves up with responsibilities and obligations. So no more regular Sunday rides. Rides and other events are on a "when it can happen" basis. The HPV is mechanically similar to a bicycle - the driver sits in a seat and uses pedals to move it along. In addition, there are some hybrid vehicles in the competition, which also contain an alternate power source, such as an internal combustion engine or a solar powered electrical engine. The HPV isdriven on a bitumized road surface, and is seen as a viable form of transport for people seeking a healthy lifestyle. Are Human Powered Vehicles Practical?
Somebody at work a while back postulated that it was possible to design a human powered vehicle in which a person could, with moderate effort, achieve and maintain 60 MPH. It's a nice dream, until you sit down and do the math. You can imagine that a lot of people have spent considerable time crunching these particular numbers. It didn't take me long to find the International Human Powered Vehicle Association on the Internet. Using the spreadsheets from their tools page , I came up with some representative numbers. The primary impediments to motion are rolling friction and air resistance, so I selected the vehicle that has the least air resistance (a streamlined recumbent bicycle), and a tire with very low coefficient of rolling friction (0.002). Finally, I assumed that the combined weight of rider and vehicle is 200 pounds. To maintain a speed of 60 MPH with that combination would require a sustained power output of 0.825 HP. Fine. But even elite athletes (think Lance Armstrong) can achieve a sustained power output of only 0.4 horsepower (about 300 watts) for long periods. A reasonably fit person can expect to maintain between 0.1 and 0.15 HP for a 4-hour period. Obviously, we can't expect human powered vehicles to travel at 60 MPH. The interesting thing is that the power requirement doesn't increase linearly with weight. If you double the weight of the bike and riders to 400 pounds (say, a dual bicycle with two people pedaling), the required output power only increases to 0.892 HP. Two elite athletes working together could come very close to a sustained 60 MPH.
