The horseshoe, hung above the door, was given special powers against evil by St. Dunston, a blacksmith by trade, who became the Archbishop of Canterbury in A.D. 959. For centuries people have held the horseshoe in high esteem. At first, it was placed above a doorframe with pointed ends up, "lest the luck would drain out" Later it was moved midway down the door, serving the duel function of a talisman and doorknocker. Authentic: Hardened Steel Horseshoes ground and polished to a mirror surface and finished in Brite Chrome, Brite Nickel or 24k Gold. All kits come with leather strap, deluxe wall hanger, deluxe pouch, greeting card and laminated history of the horseshoe.

It is an expression dreamy yet intense, a good deal like that worn by anyone who is composing poetry or worrying about his digestion. This was the expression which through a warm afternoon last week in St. Petersburg, Fla., appeared on the face of Charles C. Davis of Columbus, Ohio, and was not noticed because it also appeared on the face of his opponent, a young man named Bert Duryee of Wichita, Kan. Without taking off his cracked and faded straw hat Davis tossed horseshoes at an iron stake driven into the ground 40 feet from where he stood. Duryee was not quite so calm; the crowd seemed to bother him and before he got going Davis had a lead of nearly 20 points which he held to the end of the game, beating Duryee 50 to 30, and so winning a diamond studded medal, $300, and, for the third time in succession, the horseshoe pitching championship of the world.

Treating Founder (Chronic Laminitis) without Horseshoes
(Scroll down for Table of Contents (Click on small thumbnail photos to see larger versions.)
(Updated February 18, 2007) I have gotten better results on my foundered horse using a FREQUENT barefoot trim than with using horseshoes. This trimming style is based on the shape of wild horse feet, as described in Jaime Jackson's research on wild horses, and Dr. Hiltrud Strasser's books, " A Lifetime of Soundness " and " Shoeing: A Necessary Evil? " Dr. Strasser's books have been a tremendous help in understanding the physiology of the hoof and how different trimming and shoeing styles effect it.
My last photos of Max...early 2004 Sadly, I have to report that my old foundered horse, Max, died March 23, 2004. ...Rest well, sweet prince! Foundered foot, inside and out The success of this approach to laminitis hinges on trimming the feet OFTEN (ideally 2x weekly), keeping the horse on firm, non-concussive ground during the recovery period when he is barefoot, and using removable boots when working him on hard or rocky ground to prevent stone bruisesuntil enough sole and hoof wall thickness builds up, and enough stronger new laminae grow down to return the coffin bone to a more normal position.

    History
Horseshoe pitching probably grew out of quoits, a game played by Roman soldiers in the early Christian Era, in which a ring is tossed at a stake or pin set in the ground. (The indoor children's game commonly known as "ring toss" is a scaled down version.) Some writers think it happened the other way around: that horseshoe pitching came first and quoits followed. Others say that quoits was played by the Roman officers, while the common foot soldiers had to content themselves with using horseshoes. The problem with both of those theories is that there's no evidence that the Romans used U-shaped horseshoes. In fact, Roman horseshoes were either solid plates or closed rings, similar to quoits, and they were fastened by straps, not nailed onto the hoof. It seems very likely that the Romans did introduce quoits during their occupation of Britain, from the 1st to 5th century, and that English picked up the game from them. In any event, both quoits and horseshoe pitching were brought to America by English settlers. During the 19th century, quoits was more popular in the Eastern United States, while horseshoe pitching was more popular in the Midwest. During the Civil War, Union soldiers whiled away time by pitching mule shoes on improvised courts set up in their camps, and many of them undoubtedly introduced the game to others after the war.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search For other uses, see Horseshoe (disambiguation) Modern horseshoes are most commonly made of steel and nailed into the hoof wall. A horseshoe is a "U"-shaped item made of metal or of modern synthetic materials, nailed or glued to the hooves of horses and some other draught animals . Like a shoe on a human, it is used to protect the animal's feet from wear and tear. Professional horseshoers, called farriers , usually place horseshoes on the solar (outer) surface of the hoof by nailing through the insensitive hoof wall, which is analogous anatomically to the human toenail , though much larger and thicker. Some horseshoes have "calkins", "caulks", or "calks", protrusions at the toe and/or heels of the shoe, to provide additional traction. Horseshoes are available in a wide variety of materials and styles, developed for different types of horses and the work they do. The most common materials are steel and aluminum , but specialized shoes may include use of rubber plastic magnesium titanium or copper Steel tends to be preferred in sports where a strong, long-wearing shoe is needed, such as

    THE HORSESHOE
Without a doubt, the most commonly encountered lucky charm in modern North America is the horseshoe and its representative models in the form of jewelry, wall hangings, and printed images. This little horseshoe, shown here life-size, is actually a hand-forged pony shoe that my daughter Althaea and i discovered and dug out of the ground one day in 1976 while we were walking an old logging trail through the woods in the Missouri Ozarks. It probably dates from the 1910s to 1930s. The use of worn-out horseshoes as magically protective amulets especially hung above or next to doorways originated in Europe, where one can still find them nailed onto houses, barns, and stables from Italy through Germany and up into Britain and Scandinavia. Additionally, wall hangins made in the form of horseshoes are common. In the Middle-East, one finds the terra cotta blue-glazed horseshoe plaque . In Turkey small metal or blue glass horseshoes are blended with the protective all-seeing eye to form a unique apotropaic charm i call the horseshoe-and-eyes that is believed to ward off the evil eye There is good reason to suppose that the crescent form of the horseshoe links the symbol to pagan Moon goddesses of ancient Europe such as Artemis and Diana, and that the protection invoked is that of the goddess herself, or, more particularly, of her

    Horseshoe Pitching
The horseshoe pitch consists of two ends each of which has a "pitching box" which is a six feet square marked on the ground. Inside each pitching box is a smaller rectangle which measures around three by six feet or slightly less and is referred to as "the pit". The pit is oriented centrally so that its long side is parallel to the long edge of the pitch and is filled with sand to absorb the impact of a horseshoe. In the middle of each pit is a metal stake one inch in diameter sticking up fifteen inches above the surface and inclined about three inches from the vertical towards the thrower. The points where each stake intersects the ground are separated by forty feet.
