Help Horseshoes, Nails, Saddles, and Riding By Mary Bellis Sculptures and drawings that date from the 2nd millennium BC show men and women on horseback. The saddle probably originated in the societies of the Asian steppes (as well as the the stirrup and the horse collar) and received a high degree of development in medieval Europe. It is unknown who invented the first horseshoe. Early Asian horsemen used horse booties made from leather and plants. During the first century, the Romans made leather and metal shoes called "hipposandals". By the 6th and 7th centuries, European horsemen had begun nailing metal shoes to horses' hooves. Around 1000 AD, cast bronze horseshoes with nail holes had became common in Europe. The 13th and 14th centuries brought the widespread manufacturing of iron horseshoes. Hot-shoeing, the process of heating the horseshoe before shoeing the horse, became common in the 16th century. All before the first horseshoe was ever patented.

11. Horseshoes
The horseshoe is considered very lucky and used to be hung in many homes to protect and attract good fortune for the family residing inside.

Horseshoes
Horseshoes were also considered lucky because they were made by blacksmiths, which is also considered a very lucky trade. Because they worked with elemental fire and magical iron, they were thought to have special powers. It was believed that a blacksmith could heal the sick and if a couple was married by a blacksmith, their marriage would be a happy one. Their work with horses also brought them much power and prestige, not just because they made the lucky horseshoe but also because they were the keepers of the Horseman's Word (the basis for the movie, The Horse Whisperer Horseshoes were originally made from iron, which may also account for the superstitions that are associated with this object. Iron was considered magical because it was able to withstand fire and was much stronger than other metals. The superstitions for iron are thought to originate in prehistoric times. It was used as a charm to ward off evil spirits. Another aspect of the horseshoe that added to it's good luck was the fact that it was commonly held in place by seven iron nails. Since ancient times, the number seven was considered very important. Life was divided into seven ages; a rainbow has seven colors; astrology once held that seven planets made up the universe; there are seven deadly sins; a seventh child was thought to have special powers; there are seven days in a week; the moon changes from one phase to another every seven days; and a long-held belief states that the body goes through a radical change every seven years.

All About Horseshoes
Types of Horseshoes
Horseshoes are made from steel aluminum synthetics titanium ... brass , and even rawhide. Horseshoes come in two basic configurations: open heeled and bar. The two basic types have an infinite number of variations which can be custom fitted to a horse. A horseshoe can also have additional features such as clips, calks, jar calks, screw-ins, bubbles, or grabs.
The Reason for Horseshoes
Protection
Steel
The most common type of horseshoe used today is made of steel. Steel horseshoes are readily available and easy to attach. They can be modified with minimal skill. Most Farriers use only steel horseshoes. However, sometimes a horse needs another type of horseshoe.
Aluminum
Synthetics
Synthetic horseshoes made from solid rubber or plastic have limited applications. Horses working on hard surfaces or with pathological conditions can often benefit from synthetic horseshoes. Full synthetic horseshoes cover the entire sole and trap moisture which creates an ideal condition for a disease known as Thrush. Rim type synthetic horseshoes have a tendency to shift. Rubber and plastic covered steel horseshoes with built-in clips, where the sole is not fully covered, are an alternative when synthetic horseshoes are necessary.

History of Horseshoes
Dating back as early as the second century, iron plates or rings were nailed on horses' feet in Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Horseshoes is thought to have evolved from a couple of different games, the Grecian game of discuss and the game of ring toss called Quoits. Horseshoe historians have not been able to discover when the game of quoits or horseshoes was changed so that it was pitched at two stakes, but it is pretty well established that horseshoe pitching had its origin in the game of quoits and that quoits is a modification of the ancient Grecian game of discus throwing. Horseshoes Playing Surfaces:
You do not need to build a formal pitching court to enjoy the game of horseshoes. The game can be played simply by driving two stakes 40 feet apart. A layer of sand around the stakes is recommended.

Some are quite "famous" within the profession, whereas others are not as well known. What they all have in common is the urge to share their knowledge and experience with others. For that we should be thankful, as their writings enrich all of us. If you want to have a discussion about something you've read in these articles, have something to add, or have a question, the Bulletin Board sections of this site are designed to take your questions. Exchanging ideas and information is what this site is all about. We all benefit. The articles are divided into 9 sections: Within each section the articles are listed in alphabetical order. The Significance of Horseshoes and Rubies
Written and Researched by Margaret Sypniewska THE HORSESHOE The power of the horseshoe has been recognized since before the birth of Christ. A horseshoe is a U-shaped metal frame, usually of iron, that is nailed to a horse's hoof to give protection against wearing them down on rough surfaces. In legend, a man named Jastrzebryk, a blacksmith(?) (in 999) was thought to be the first Polish man to use horseshoes for the protection of his horse's hooves. However, we know that horseshoes were actually used by the Greeks as early as the 4th century B.C. Since horses were believed to be one of the most sacred of animals, their crescent-shaped shoes became symbols of good luck. Horseshoes were often nailed over the outside thresholds of houses and barns so that witches could not enter. Horseshoes were thought to protect and bring good luck. On May Day, it was traditional to take down all horse-shoes and turn them, being careful not to let them touch the ground. Horseshoes can also be hung over the fireplace for luck, and even over the entrances of mines. Many think the heels should point upwards (but this is not universal). People think this because they believe if the shoe is hung with the ends pointing downwards, positive ill-luck may be drawn upwards, and all the good luck will disappear into the ground or drip out. Interestingly enough, the towns of Burlton and Oakham, in England, charged a "toll of the horseshoes," which was collected from every peer and member of the Royal family, who passed through their towns. Horseshoes are prominent in their town's coat of arms.
