T
Containing 167,323 acres, Ventana Wilderness straddles the Santa Lucia Mountains south of the Monterey Peninsula. This unique area of rugged coastal mountains is managed by the United States Forest Service.
Topography in the Wilderness is characterized by steep-sided, sharp-crested ridges separating V-shaped valleys. Elevations range from 600 feet, where the Big Sur River leaves the wilderness, to about 5,750 feet at the wilderness boundary circumventing Junipero Serra Peak. Most streams fall rapidly through narrow vertical-walled canyons flowing on bedrock or a veneer of boulders. Waterfalls, deep pools and thermal springs are found along major streams.
The climate is mild. Precipitation falls primarily as rain from November to April and ranges widely from more than 100 inches annually along the Coast Ridge to less than 30 inches only a few miles inland. The cool marine influence does not extend past the coastal ridges, thus most areas east of the divide are hot and dry during the Summer and early Fall.

Amazing Race winners: what to do with the money?
by Jamie Rhein Jan 23rd 2008 @ 10:30AM This article contains spoilers. If you haven't seen the finale, please do not read this.
The answer to "Now what?" of TK Eriwn and Rachel Rosale's Amazing Race Let's say Rachel decided to save $100,000 in some sort of aggressive funds. She's young so she can do that. Risk taking is on her side. In 8 years or so, she'll have $200,000. In 16 years, $300,000. In 24 years at age 46, she'll have $600,000 and by the time she's 52, if all goes well she'll have over $1,200.00. By 60, over two million. That's if she doesn't touch that $100,000. That strategy could give her a very sweet deal for later travel. But, that's later, this is now. Let's talk about the remaining $200,000. Even if they each spent $50,000 on travel over the course of a few years, providing she rents out her house so someone else is paying the mortgage, what a great time they could have. Hiking Zion National Park
Zion is one of the most diverse hiking meccas on the planet. Millions flock to the gates to enjoy the slot canyons, the daring trails and to backpack the rims. Explore our list of vantage points and vistas. Low and high deserts, waterfalls, high cliffs, sandstone wilderness, the Virgin River's lush valley and Zion's water filled slot canyons. Best Trails Hiking on the East side of Zion National Park - The east side of Zion National Park is slickrock country. Slickrock is red sandstone that is lacking large concentrations of iron oxide. Thus, the more easily eroded rock forms buttes and domes. The rock does not appear slick. It is rough in fact, and has a loose layer of sand on the surface. The rock formations on the east side of Zion are spectacular, but most of the well known front country trails are located in Zion Canyon.
