Find Accommodation Holiday Offers What to see and do ... All About Scotland Any trip to Scotland during the summer months just wouldn't be complete without a visit to at least one Highland games. The games, which take place from Aberfeldy to Tomintoul and all points in between, are a unique mix of the sporting, the cultural and the social. They usually comprise a programme of field and track events, piping and Highland dancing competitions and 'heavy events' like the tug-o-war, the hammer throw and tossing the caber. The competitive element is a major attraction in its own right but when combined with the spectacle of Highland dancers and pipers and the colour and grandeur of the Scottish scenery which forms their backdrop, Highland games become a 'must-see' highlight for every visitor to Scotland. On Sunday September 10, 1972 the Peeblesshire Tourist Association held the first local Pipe Band Contest. At that contest 25 bands competed giving a total of 33 performances. Over the years we have added Highland Dancing, Heavy events and Tug-of-war to give us today's Highland Games. We consider our present Games to be among the best non-championship events, providing a more relaxed atmosphere at the end of the competition season. This could not be achieved without the time and effort of a considerable number of voluntary helpers many of whom return year after year. We offer them our grateful thanks and look forward to their continued support. Over the years we have been honoured by Chieftains from our local area and further afield and they have all brought their own unique personality to the position.
Admission for this years event is £4 (Concessions (£3)

W elcome to Rural Hill, the historic homestead of Major John and Violet (Wilson) Davidson. A descendant of Scottish immigrants, John Davidson joined the Patriot cause during the American Revolution. Serving as an officer in the American army and a signer of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, John Davidson risked his life and property to support American independence. Through great ambition and good fortune, John and his wife, Violet, saw Rural Hill grow to become one of the most prosperous plantations in the piedmont Carolinas. They raised 10 children who continued their legacy for five consecutive generations. Today, Rural Hill is a restoration in progress with 265 acres of magnificent rural vistas, 11 historic and reconstructed buildings, a variety of farm animals, and walking trails throughout the site. The Catawba Valley Scottish Society, which is the steward of this historic farm, provides educational programs to teach visitors about the significant contributions the Davidson family made to the Mecklenburg County and Carolina region. Heritage and cultural events also surround Rural Hill throughout the year to include the premiere signature event, the Loch Norman Highland Games, which is held each April. Six generations of the Davidson family lived at Rural Hill for more than 230 years. Leaders, soldiers, doctors, teachers, and successful businessmen walked these grounds. Their fascinating s

SSCC Motto
The SSCC Board of Governors on May 28, 2002 adopted an official motto for the Scottish Society of Central California and developed the official SSCC flag. The motto “AIR SON GRADH NA h-ALBANN” which means “ For The Love of Scotland”. A Rendition of the official flag is shown below and will incorporate the motto on it.
A quote from one of our members.
"The credit for the idea of the motto goes to member Alice Stevenson who thought the society should have one. She mentioned this to me and I agreed that it was a great idea. I could not get it out of my head that night, and I asked myself why I have worked so hard for the society for so many years, and also for my Clan society and other Scottish organizations. I decided that the reason I did it was “ For the Love of Scotland”. From there I wrote the phase in Gaelic and with the help of a Gaelic speaking friend to check my work and make a grammatical change, came up with the motto". "I also felt that we should have a flag of our own & designed one, which was adopted by the board. The flag will be displayed at all of our official functions, but will not complete in time for the general meeting in June".

:: HHG Homepage Welcome to the web site for the Halkirk Highland Games, the premiere sporting event in the North of Scotland and the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Every summer, on the last Saturday in July, up to 5,000 visitors and locals flock to the village of Halkirk in Caithness (pop. 1,000) for a day of traditional and spectacular Scottish sport. They are guaranteed to be enthralled in watching over 100 competitors, many being national or world champions, challenging each other for various championship titles. The immensely strong Highland 'heavyweight' athletes, light footed Highland dancers, traditional Scottish pipers, fast runners, nimble jumpers, courageous cyclists, accurate clay pigeon shooters, excited children and even bonnie babies, all compete in around 100 events to produce a memorable afternoon. The Halkirk Games offers the biggest prize purse in Scotland with over £21,000 available. Combined with a friendly welcome, excellent organisation and the staging of many national championships, it is no wonder that athletes from all over the world enjoy competing at Halkirk. In particular, the traditional Scottish heavyweight competition regularly attracts the best 'Heavies' from the USA. The "Heavies" resplendent in their kilts, are the true Highland strongmen and provide a unique sporting spectacle. Tossing the caber (a 19 foot long tree trunk) is an event not to be missed. Throwing the Scots hammer, tossing the sheaf, putting the shot, throwing the weight for height and distance, plus the eight man tug o' war contest are events that will keep you enthralled all afternoon.
