Handcycling began in the 1980s as a recreational sport. Early equipment was hard to find, clunky, and expensive. The leap from “leg only” powered to “arm powered” was made by cyclists from within the ranks of the human powered vehicle movement. Ironically, the original handcycle was not intended for someone with a disability. Nonetheless, the development made it possible for individuals of all abilities to experience the joy of cycling. Today, handcycles reap the benefits of both the modern cycling industry and cutting-edge wheelchair technology, including light weight components, high pressure tires, wide-range gearing systems, hi-tech. seating systems, hydration systems, and ingenious steering systems for optimal handling. Handcycling was approved as part of the IPC Cycling Program in 1998 and was included at the World Cycling Championships for the Disabled that same year. In 2004, the IPC included a race for handcycles (men only) at the Paralympic Games in Athens Greece for the first time. Although handcycle racing is still relatively new, it has become very popular worldwide and athletes in the U.S., Europe, and Australia compete in respective national race series. Although handcycling is popular with the racing crowd, most handcycles are purchased by recreational athletes. In contrast to racing wheelchairs, handcycles are easily adjusted, simple to operate, and very easy to transfer in and out of. As a result, thousands of people with and without disabilities are handcycling to improve cardiovascular and aerobic health, increase upper body strength, ride with friends and family, and improve overall fitness.

A few years later, athletes with cerebral palsy and amputees competed during the 1984 International Games for the Disabled. The inclusion of Road Cycling in the competition programme of the Seoul 1988 Paralympic Games, constituted a milestone in the history of Cycling. Until the Barcelona 1992 Paralympic Games, athletes from each disability class competed in separate Cycling championships. Track Cycling events were first included in the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games programme.

Here's a great picture of folks on handcycles, which is a bicycle adapted for folks whose legs are paralyzed. Instead of pedaling with your feet, you pedal with your hands. Special adaptations are available for quadriplegics to the C5 level. *
The one on the left is a lower model which is good for those who can transfer onto it. If that is hard for you, there are higher handcycles available, like the one on the right.
Handcycles are a great way to get exercise, have fun bicycling with your friends and spend time outdoors, but not in your wheelchair. Make sure you observe the same safety rules as bicyclists - wear a helmet, stick a safety flag on there if you're in areas where you might be hard to see , and then check out good bike routes or events in your area.
(*Scott at bike-on.com can help you with this- his company has done a lot of hard work in the area and give good advice to quads) Posted by Ruth at 6:49 PM

As an event promoter, it is important to me that athletes with and without disabilities can race together, which is why the RMO is a fully-integrated cycling race, with more than 300 athletes. In collaboration with U.S. Paralympics staff and coaches, we have created an awesome new time trial course, which will be used to select the 2007 World Championship team. Saturday's road race, followed by Sunday's criterium will also feature the Paralympic categories, all within minutes of downtown Denver.

Handcycling - arm powered cycling The sport of handcycling is little known inside mainstream cycling circles, not surprising when it only really established itself 5 years ago, but is a unique endurance sport that is taking the disabled sports world by storm. It is becoming the fastest growing sport for disabled athletes, and this year it has its Paralympic debut at Athens.
Handcycles are propelled with the arms, shoulders, chest, back and sometimes torso depending on the level and nature of the riders disability. There are two basic forms of handcycle, one that attaches to a wheelchair and the other a standalone recumbent bike. The wheelchair clip-ons, as they are known, are useful as recreational and mobility aids but the recumbent bikes have now evolved into dynamic racing machines that can travel between 20-25mph on flat road race circuits. The racing handcycles have 3 wheels, the wheel in the front is the propulsion wheel, the two in the back keep the handcycle balanced. They combine elements of MTB and racing bike technology with the design of racing wheelchairs. Two Examples of racing handcycles: Top End GOLD Schmicking S1 Overdrive Relationships have developed between British Cycling and the Hand Cycling Association (UKHCA) to enable this section of Disability Cycle Sport to become fully integrated within the activities of British Cycling. Handcyclists have already formed part of the GB Team when riding Internationally, though sadly there will not be any GB handcyclists on the line in the 2004 Paralympic Games.
