(OpenCube Inc. - http://www.opencube.com)**** cddcodebase = "http://www.adaptiveadventures.org/scripts/"; History of Handcycling and Adaptive Cycling Equipment Racing, Training and Nutrition Terminology Today, handcycles reap the benefits of both the modern cycling industry and cutting-edge wheelchair technology, including light weight components, high pressure tires, wide-range gearing systems, hi-tech. seating systems, hydration systems, and ingenious steering systems for optimal handling. Handcycling was approved as part of the IPC Cycling Program in 1998 and was included at the World Cycling Championships for the Disabled that same year. In 2004, the IPC included a race for handcycles (men only) at the Paralympic Games in Athens Greece for the first time. Although handcycle racing is still relatively new, it has become very popular worldwide and athletes in the U.S., Europe, and Australia compete in respective national race series. Although handcycling is popular with the racing crowd, most handcycles are purchased by recreational athletes. In contrast to racing wheelchairs, handcycles are easily adjusted, simple to operate, and very easy to transfer in and out of. As a result, thousands of people with and without disabilities are handcycling to improve cardiovascular and aerobic health, increase upper body strength, ride with friends and family, and improve overall fitness.

A Little Handcycling
My pal Mike Augspurger just dropped me a note to remind me of the upcoming 2nd Annual Offroad Handcycling Championships. Slated to run on August 25-26 in Crested Butte, Colorado, this US Handcycling event includes a five-mile cross-country race, a three-mile hill climb and a trials exhibition. Definitely not for the faint of heart! Still, it looks to be great fun and if I didn’t have a previous commitment, I’d be tempeted to check it out. Thanks for the invite Mike! And thanks to the Crested Butte Adaptive Sports Center for helping make this event possible. For more information about the event, visit http://www.ushandcycling.org/offroad_07.html And if you’re in the area check it out. Posted by Candy Harrington in Recreation at

Crank it up a notch
By Jason Blevins
Denver Post Staff Writer
DenverPost.com Mt. Crested Butte - "Whoa, hey, be careful!" Steve Ackerman is about to tip over and the lady watching his hand-cranking ascent of a steep rocky pitch is quite worried. He's not. "What, you don't like carnage?" said the 52-year-old Fort Collins handcycling legend, as he leaned over his pedals with powerful strokes. "I'm all about carnage." Ackerman's huge arms propel his handcrafted machine up and over a pile of rocks without any bloodshed. He's followed by a dozen other athletes, each testing the boundaries of their abilities and disabilities on unique three-wheeled machines as part of last weekend's inaugural off-road World Handcycling Championships on Crested Butte's steep ski hill. They cranked up the mountain's muddy hills. Over rocks and through impossible-at-first- glance terrain. Down boulder-choked, narrow singletrack. Up and down for miles, without a single crank on pavement. "I've never pushed as hard as I did today," said Daewon Mickelson, a 24-year-old Durango local whose relatively recent loss of leg power from a ski accident did nothing to slow his lung-bursting arm cranking in Saturday's soggy 2-mile hill climb, a race in which the handcycling newcomer placed third. "That was so hardcore. When I ride with my friends in Durango, they kind of baby me. These guys out here are like: 'You better keep up or you're getting left behind."'

These programs combine both recreation and education in a series of opportunities throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Building on the popular canoe and kayak "floats" and the popularity of the "Tour de Necklace", IGO is branching out to offer cycling "rides" throughout the park district this summer. Much like our "floats", the "rides" will be relaxed outings in different regions of the park district, allowing you to discover the gems of the Emerald Necklace with your friends and family following our extensive All Purpose Trails. These programs are open to cyclists of all ages and are accessible to people of all abilities. Helmets are mandatory for all riders. Watch for the 2008 Schedule Soon! People say riding a bike is so easy, you never forget how to do it. Riding a handcycle is so easy, you won’t know why you hadn’t yet tried it.

Handcycling 101 Everything you ever wanted to know about handcycling, but were afraid to ask P eople say riding a bike is so easy, you never forget how to do it. Riding a handcycle is so easy, you won’t know why you hadn’t yet tried it. Handcycling has been around for more than two decades, and the design of the trikes that have revolutionized exercise and recreation for people with disabilities continues to improve, making them faster, more agile, and more accessible for anyone who wants to get in the saddle. The crank of a handcycle is positioned near the upper body of the rider and propels the front wheel, rather than the rear wheel, of the cycle. Handbrakes, located near the hand pedals or seat (depending on model), work the same as typical bicycle brakes. The seats, or saddles, on handcycles are more supportive than bicycle seats, resembling the seats used on recumbent bikes. Rather than being designed specifically for people with disabilities, the first handcycle design took shape in the hands of nondisabled cyclists looking to increase the use of human-powered vehicles. Although they have failed so far to spawn a new age for American transportation, they did create the opportunity for people with disabilities to get back in the saddle.
