2007 Series History of the Sport Today, handcycles reap the benefits of both the modern cycling industry and cutting-edge wheelchair technology, including light weight components, high pressure tires, wide-range gearing systems, hi-tech. seating systems, hydration systems, and ingenious steering systems for optimal handling. Handcycling was approved as part of the IPC Cycling Program in 1998 and was included at the World Cycling Championships for the Disabled that same year. In 2004, the IPC included a race for handcycles (men only) at the Paralympic Games in Athens Greece for the first time. Although handcycle racing is still relatively new, it has become very popular worldwide and athletes in the U.S., Europe, and Australia compete in respective national race series. Although handcycling is popular with the racing crowd, most handcycles are purchased by recreational athletes. In contrast to racing wheelchairs, handcycles are easily adjusted, simple to operate, and very easy to transfer in and out of. As a result, thousands of people with and without disabilities are handcycling to improve cardiovascular and aerobic health, increase upper body strength, ride with friends and family, and improve overall fitness.

Off-road handcycling provides adaptive mountain bikers chance to compete

Off-Road Handcycling World Championships Enlarge photos View thumbnails CRESTED BUTTE — Keegan Reilly slumped over his bike, gasping after crossing the finish line. Grinning at the hands reaching out to him for high fives, the Denver resident turned his sweaty, radiant face to his competitors. "I cranked it as hard as I possibly could, and you guys were just gone," Reilly said. "I couldn't breathe." The 2.5-mile hill climb marked his first off-road handcycle race, where he finished eighth. But, more importantly, he found his place in an intimate community. Athletes of every level gathered in Crested Butte on the last weekend of August for the second annual Off-Road Handcycling World Championships. The championships provide an arena for disabled athletes to compete in a mountain bike event on some of the toughest terrain in the country. The riders use handcycles, which employ arm power instead of leg power. The unique and technical cycles are equipped for mountain terrain and look like it compared to the more common road handcycles. The athletes competed in a hill climb and a cross-country race on the steep slopes of Mt. Crested Butte, powering their three-wheeled, 45-pound cycles through rocks, roots and mud.
