PANKRATION Pre-Christian form of Greek fighting. Pankration, sometimes spelled pancration, or pancratium or even pankratium, was a combination of earlier forms of boxing and wrestling practiced by the Greeks. Some historians trace its origin to the Indian vairamushti system. It should be noted, however, that pankration and the Pyrrhic dance, a Greek armed and unarmed war-dance similar to modern karate kata (formal exercises), both antedate Indian statues depicting temple guardians in poses similar to those used in latter-day fighting arts. In 648 BC pankration was introduced to the Greek Olympic Games. A subdivision, boy's pankration, was added in the 2nd century BC, which attests to the popularity of the sport. The object was, as in boxing, to force an opponent to acknowledge defeat, and to this end almost any means might be applied. Though rules were enforced by officials with a switch or stout rod, a whipping must have been more desirable than being killed, for the rules were often broken. Serious injuries and fatal accidents did occur, but they were rare, rarer probably than in ancient Greek boxing. Facing one another, much as in the position taken by wrestlers, pankratiasts, as they were called, tried to bring one another violently to the ground by grappling, hitting, kicking, leg-sweeping, choking, or joint-locking.

Wrestling
The various styles of worldwide Wrestling in hand-to-hand fighting have preceded, without any doubt, the many kinds of Boxing we know today. Sumerians were the first to mention a fight opposing Gilgamesh to Enkidu. Egypt left us through its low reliefs an extract of the various techniques of Wrestling, whose rules neared those of all-in Wrestling. In Greece, there were formerly several fighting systems. Wrestling itself was divided into three principal styles: the Orthopales, the Pale and the Alyndisiz where the legendary Milon of Kroton distinguished himself in winning six times at Olympia. Proud of his strength, he liked to show it off: holding a pomegranate in his hand, he challenged whoever to make him open his fingers or to crush the fruit by squeezing them. He was defeated for the first time during the 67th Olympic games (512 BC), when he was over forty. Pugilism
If Wrestling was the sport Greeks valued the most, Pugilism and Pankration were also practiced, so that they very early became Olympic disciplines.

What is Pankration? Pankration will be in the 2004 Greek Olympics
(Using Shootfighting Rules) You will be hearing a lot more about Pankration as we get closer to 2004! PANKRATION pan-kray'shun Greek "Game of all powers" Pankration is a Greek word meaning "All strength" ( pan = all, kratos = strength; it also has a synonym - pammachon - which means "total fight". There were three combative sports in the ancient Greek Olympics. Wrestling was introduced in 708 b.c. in the 18th Olympiad, the same year the "pentathlon" was introduced. Boxing was admitted in 688 in the 23rd Olympiad. Pankration is the most well-documented fighting art of the pre-Christian era. It was introduced at the 33rd Olympiad in 648 b.c., the same year horse racing was introduced. In boxing until the 5th century b.c. a boxer's only protection was strips of leather about ten to twelve feet long, which were wrapped around the hands . They were called himantes and offered little protection to the hand. NOTE: In modern boxing the length of the taping or wrap is 120": ten feet!

Awesome book!! From Amazon.com
Excellent Revision This book is a rewrite and expanded version of Mr. Arvanitis's previous book on Greek pankration. There are additional photos and new sections included. The quality of the book matches that of the content presented. Although there are many fighting skills that can be found in other martial arts systems, Arvanitis emphasizes the "core" pankration techniques by their classic Greek terms. Nice touch!! This book is well laid out and easy to follow. There is a wealth of material here from a man who has been an innovative force behind MMA since the early-1970s. This is the best coverage of this ancient art to date. From Amazon.com

by CHRIS BARRY Name: Aris Makris Age: Occupation: Pankration instructor Bio: This Chomedey stud of Herculean proportions first became interested in the martial arts as a teenage Bruce Lee fan back in the 1970s. Having acquired seven black belts in the various arts, "none of them less than three dan," young Aris fell upon pankration, an ancient Greek martial art which bears an uncanny resemblance to modern day Ultimate Fighting competitions you might have seen on TV. Originally pursuing it because it is "part of my heritage," Aris says that "the wind of Achilles took me off" and eventually inspired him to open the Canadian Pankration Academy ( www.pankrationcanada.com ) in the mid-1980s - a school he continues to operate today. "Pankration is a lifestyle. You need a certain amount of brains to do this. It's the ultimate chess game." The number of brainiacs he's registered who are just looking for better ways to beat people up? None. "I enjoy tough guys, but I won't accept anybody who I feel is malevolent and intentionally wants to hurt people. My school has a family atmosphere." Are battling granddads an element of said family atmosphere?

Pankration was an ancient sport introduced in the Greek Olympic games in 648 BC. Many historians believe that, although Pankration was not one of the first Olympic sports, it was likely the most popular. Some also argue it to be the first all-encompassing fighting system in human history. This is a strongly debated issue in the academic community.
Pankration
Etymology : The term comes from the Ancient Greek words "pan" (meaning "all") and "kratos" (meaning "strength" or "power") or in other words, no holds barred. The term is also used to describe the sport's modern varieties.
Origins
In Greek mythology it was said that the heroes Hercules and Theseus invented the pankration as a result of using both wrestling and boxing, were the two co-founders of panmahia, unarmed combat.
The term " panmahia " would later become disused in favor of the term pankration . The ropolo (club) and lion skin armor would also become symbolic among Hellenic warriors due to the famed feats of Hercules. It had numerious forms such as kato pankration, in which the athletes could fall to the ground and continue the match, and ano pankration, in which athletes had to remain standing throughout the match.
The competitors could use moves like the gastrizein , (stomach trick), which was a kick to the gut, as well as the apopternizein , (heel trick), where a foot was grabbed to throw an opponent off balance. Also one opponent could hold another and punch him during a match. Pankration was more than just an Olympic event, it formed the basis for all combat training for Greek soldiers - including the famous Spartan Hoplite warriors and Alexander The Great's Macedonian Phalanxes.
