GoalballThe Great Equalizer
by Vasantha Ayilavarapu Editor’s Note: When we think of inclusion of blind students in sports, we usually think of adapting games that have evolved for players with perfect vision. Here is Mrs. Ayilavarapu to describe a different approach to sports and inclusion: As a resource teacher of blind and visually impaired students in a school-based program at Federal Hill Preparatory School, a Baltimore City public K-8 school, I am constantly facing the challenge of facilitating inclusion and promoting acceptance of my blind students as equals in all areas by their sighted peers. At that sensitive age, nothing works better than sports in creating opportunities for interaction. All children love sports and relish the challenge of “fighting it out” on a sporting field. In my quest for sporting activities appropriate for my students and their sighted peers, I discovered goalball, thanks to the ever-innovative National Federation of the Blind and a local nonprofit organization, Common Senses. As those of us who work with blind students know, goalball is played with a special ball that is about the size of a basketball with a similar texture and bells inside to provide sound clues. The lines on the playing area are tactual. Whenever one player needs to pass the ball to another, he calls to the player and the other player taps the floor to let him/her locate the position of the receiving player. When turning this into an inclusive game, both blind and sighted students wear blindfolds (sleepshades) and use sound and tactile cues to play the game. Any player who needs to leave the playing area is escorted off the court using sighted guide techniques, since the players are not allowed to take their blindfolds off on the court.

Contact Info Schedule Announcements INTRODUCTION
In response to demand within the Montreal Association for the Blind Transition Group (senior high school students support group), a league has been formed to practice the sport of Goalball recreationally. Our primary objective in setting up such a league was to preserve the recreational aspect that had been exhibited in past games. By keeping the league non-competitive we can essentially build on socializing between young blind and visually impaired clients of the MAB. ABOUT THE SPORT Goalball is a unique team sport for the visually impaired and blind, played by 2 teams of 5 players (of which only three per team can play at the same time). It is played on a court 9 meters in width and 18 meters in length with a smooth surface. All players are blindfolded to enable blind, visually impaired and sighted athletes to play together. The game is divided into two 7-minute halves. The ball is approximately the size of a basketball and contains noise bells. The object of the game is to roll the ball over your opponent's goal line using a bowling action. MISSION STATEMENT It has been expressed by many members of the Transition Group, that they enjoy being able to participate in a sport where their visual impairment does not put them at a disadvantage. It has also been shown that most of the members are not interested in becoming competitive players, but rather casual players. Our mission is to meet these needs. We aim to keep the league in the hands of the visually impaired and blind youth who will profit from it.

Michigan goalball teams win national titles
July 9, 2007 KALAMAZOOMen's and women's goalball teams from Michigan, both with strong ties to Western Michigan University, took national titles in a recent tournament in St. Augustine, Fla. The two teams concluded the 2007 season by participating in the United States Association of Blind Athletes' national goalball tournament May 31-June 2, winning men's and women's national championships. Both teams are supported by the WMU Department of Blindness and Low Vision Studies and are composed of several current WMU students and graduates. The women's team, known as the Kalamazoo Chaos, won its third straight national championship and fourth in the last five years by defeating Colorado in the title game, 1-0. Colorado last won the championship in 2004. Members of the Chaos got revenge from their 2-1 loss to Colorado in the Mid-east Regionals in April by scoring mid-way through the first half and then playing tight defense to preserve the win. New Jersey took third place by defeating Florida. Members of the Chaos are: Nikki Buck, a graduate of Paw Paw High School now living in Kalamazoo and a student at Kalamazoo Valley Community College; Susie D'Mello, a student at Michigan State University; Asya Miller, a WMU graduate; and Kristin Millerov, a current WMU student. Buck was named female tournament MVP, while Buck and Miller were named to the all-tournament team.
