The Sheffield Goalball Group is a bunch of visually impaired people who, for reasons best known to themselves, enjoy throwing themselves on the floor and throwing a large hard ball at each other whilst blindfolded. Strangely enough, we think this is a fun way to spend our time. We also participate in various tournaments around the UK. We train on Monday evenings from 6-7pm at the Blind Institute on Mappin Street in Sheffield. For more information about training, email sheffield.scorpions@bigfoot.com What is Goalball? Goalball was originally developed in 1946 by Austrian Hanz Lorenzen and German Sepp Reindle, in an effort to help rehabilitate blinded war veterans. It has been an event at the Paralympics since 1976. Goalball is played on an indoor court measuring 18 x 9 metres. A team consists of 3 players, all of whom must wear blindfolds (usually blacked out ski masks), so that noone has any sight advantage. The object of the game is to roll the ball past the other team into their goal. In order to defend the goal, the players must dive onto the floor and lie stretched out in order to block the ball with their bodies. The ball has bells inside it so that you can hear it coming, and the court has tactile markings so you know where you are (string taped onto the floor). The game can soon become fast and furious, with balls reaching speeds of up to 50 mph., so the game requires fast reactions, courage, and intense concentration.

goalball Goalball is a unique team sport for the visually impaired, played by 2 teams of 3 players. All Players are blind-folded to enable blind, visually impaired and sighted athletes to compete together. (Although to play in a national team the athletes must be legally blind.) The game is of 14 minutes duration (playing time) divided into 2 x 7 minute halves. The ball used (which is called a goalball), weighs 1.25 kg and contains noise bells. The object of the game is to roll the ball over your opponent's goal line using a bowling action. Goalball was invented in 1946 by an Austrian Hanz Lorenzen and a German, Sett Reindle. It was used for sport and rehabilitation for the post WW II blind veterans. The game was introduced to the world in 1976 at the Paralympics in Toronto, Canada, the first world championships held in Austria in 1978. Since that time the popularity of Goalball has increased, it is now played in all IBSA (International Blind Sport Federation) regions. Before you start, you should prepare the court and organize the teams, each consisting of 3 members, 1 center and 2 wingers. You will also need to find a referee that is familiar with the rules and who will be able to start and control the course of the game. To play Goalball you will need (1) Goalball, 76cm in diameter, and 1.250g in weight, (2) rolls duck tape, and (6) pair of blacked out swim or ski goggles, which are to be used as eyeshades. You may also want to acquire some knee and elbow pads to protect against bruises and floor burns.

Sidelines, hashmarks, and other court markers consist of rope taped to the floor, providing a tactile environment in which to play. All players, regardless of actual vision, are strictly blindfolded while on the court, providing equal opportunity for all participants. The goalball, larger and heavier than an basketball, has bells inside it that provide an audible sound as the ball is rolled along the floor to the opposing team. When the ball is moved in-bounds past the back line of the defending team's court, the offensive team has scored a goal, equal to one point. The ball must be rolled on the floor, not thrown, to be in play, and penalties are assessed if the ball is not on the floor in time, as determined by the 'overthrow line.' Two seven-minute halves and two referees regulate play, which may go into overtime if the score is tied at the end of regulation play.

Goalball is also a USABA (United States Association of Blind Athletes) sanctioned sport. There are many opportunities for our athletes to become Paralympic athletes in the future. Goalball Rules Three members of each team protect the goal line at opposite ends of the court. The object is to roll the ball past the other team. The ball has to stay in bounds; when it crosses the goal line, it's a score. There are three positions: center, right wing and left wing. The duration of the game is 14 minutes, comprised of two seven-minute halves. A rubber ball with bells inside for auditory tracking is used. Each player must wear a blindfold with taped eyes, regardless of the degree of visual impairment. Illinois vs. Wisconsin The Routt Catholic High School girls swim team members and cheerleaders along with various ISVI faculty, volunteered their time to work the contest. Their help was outstanding and extremely appreciated. In the girls' contest, the ISVI started their undefeated streak at home and in the season with a 12-5 victory against the Wisconsin Center for Blind and Visually Impaired (WCBVI). Team Illinois Girls' Goalball presently sports a 1-0 record. In the boys' contest, the ISVI was defeated 13-6 by WCBVI. Team Illinois Boys' Goalball sports a 0-1 record. Illinois vs. Missouri On Tuesday, February 21st, the contest between Team Illinois Warriors and the Mules of the Missouri School for the Blind started off quite exciting. Both the Illinois boys and girls teams showed tremendous improvement since the week before against Wisconsin. Unfortunately, the Illinois boys team lost 11-6 in regulation time. The Illinois girls battled to a 5-5 tie followed by a 6-6 tie after the first round of shoot-offs, followed by a 7-6 loss in the golden goal/sudden death tie-breaker. The Illinois exhibition team also lost even though no official scores were kept.
