It was devised by an Austrian, Hanz Lorenzen , and a German, Sepp Reindle , in in an effort to help in the rehabilitation of visually impaired World War II veterans . The International Blind Sports Federation ( IBSA ), responsible for fifteen sports for the blind and partially sighted in total, is the governing body for this sport. The sport evolved into a competitive game over the next few decades and was a demonstration event at the 1976 Summer Paralympics in Toronto . The sport's first championship was held in and goalball became a full part of the Paralympics from the 1980 Summer Paralympics in Arnhem onwards Participants compete in teams of three, and try to throw a ball that has bells embedded in it, into the opponents' goal . They must use the sound of the bell to judge the position and movement of the ball. USABA Sport Adaptations Goalball What is Goalball? Goalball is a Paralympic sport played by athletes who are blind and visually impaired. Developed after WWII as a way to keep blinded veterans physically active, it has become the premiere team game for blind athletes. Played competitively by men and women, it is a very fast paced, physically challenging, strategic and exciting game. How Do You Play? In goalball, two teams of three players each face each other across a court that is nine meters wide and 18 meters long. The object of the game is to roll a basketball size ball with bells inside over the opponent's goal line. Your opponents listen for the oncoming ball and attempt to block it with their bodies. Once they are able to stop the ball and take control of it, they become the offensive team. Complete rules are available at www.ibsa.es. The Court and Rules The player's zone is marked at either end of the court by taping a heavy string down to the court for the players to feel with their hands or feet. The player's zone is 3 meters deep and extends the width of the court. Each players zone has three orientation lines which the players use to line themselves up with and maintain their orientation to the court. Three meters in front of the player's zone, is the overthrow line. The goalball must touch the floor at least once before crossing this line or a penalty is assessed. Other common penalties are for holding the ball too long, one player throwing too much and touching the eyeshade. When a penalty occurs, the guilty player must defend the entire court by himself. The game consists of two 10-minute halves and takes about 45 minutes to play an entire game.

Games are usually quite competitive and exciting to watch. Two teams play on either end of the 60x40 foot court. Players are blindfolded to make the game fair. The object is to throw a three-pound Goal ball, which is sort of like a heavy basketball, past the opposing team. Now you may be asking yourself, "how do the players keep track of the ball if they're blind?" The ball has bells in it... sounding a lot like Christmas "jingle bells..." that allow the players to listen for it. When they hear the ball coming towards their end of the court, they dive, usually head-first, towards it hoping to block it with their body and stop it. If all three players miss the ball and it goes past the back line, it is considered a goal. The team with the most goals wins the game. The Power of Goalball By Sue Wiygul Martin The onset of a disability in adulthood often brings with it the loss of more than just the affected ability. With the onset of my blindness in 1982, I immediately put several activities on my list of activities in which I could no longer participate. One such group of activities were those related to recreation, and especially competitive sports. Before the onset of my blindness I enjoyed riding, canoeing, and swimming, both competitively and recreationally. But how could I do these sports now? I dismissed them from my mind. I felt the void though. Not only was I not getting the exercise to which I was accustomed, but also I was missing the socialization that accompanied participation in these various recreational activities. I sorely missed the camaraderie at the stable and the horseplay at the takeout at the end of a canoeing trip. "Well, it's just too bad," I thought. "I can't do that anymore." At the insistence of friends, family, and my own inner prompting, I tried swimming again. I learned that once I got in the pool, I was fine. I could swim to my heart's content, contacting the lane rope every few strokes to make sure I kept straight. This restored a much-needed physical activity. I felt my body begin to shape up as I swam regularly.
