Gaelic Football U.S. Leagues/Teams International Leagues/Teams Australian Rules ... Canadian Football The first reference to any code of football in Ireland occurs in the Statute of Galway of 1527, which allowed the playing of football and archery but banned " hokie ' — the hurling of a little ball with sticks or staves" as well as other sports. However even "foot-ball" was banned by the severe Sunday Observance Act of 1695, which imposed a fine of one shilling (a substantial amount at the time) for those caught playing sports. It proved difficult, if not impossible for the authorities to enforce the Act and the earliest recorded match in Ireland was one between Louth and Meath, at Slane, in 1712.
By the early 19th century, various football games, referred to collectively as caid , were popular in Kerry , especially the Dingle Peninsula. Father W. Ferris described two forms of caid : the "field game" in which the object was to put the ball through arch-like goals, formed from the boughs of two trees, and; the epic "cross-country game" which lasted the whole of a Sunday (after mass) and was won by taking the ball across a parish boundary. "Wrestling", "holding" opposing players, and carrying the ball were all allowed.
During the 1860s and 1870s, Rugby and Association football started to become popular in Ireland. Trinity College, Dublin was an early stronghold of Rugby, and the rules of the English Football Association were codified in 1863 and distributed widely. By this time, according to Jack Mahon, even in the Irish countryside, caid had begun to give way to a "rough-and-tumble game" which even allowed tripping.

The Skills of Gaelic football Gaelic football Skills
    Choose a Skill
There are many different skills involved in the game of Gaelic football. The skills can be broadly broken down into those that involve Gaining Possession, Maintaining Possession, Releasing Possession and Contesting Possession. Many of these skills can be performed on the ground, without the need to get the ball into the hand and out of the hand.
    • Gaining Possession
Involves gaining possession and control of the football. Thus, skills such as catching and lifting are included.
    • Maintaining Possession
Once the football is under the control of the player, there are a number of skills which help the player in possession to maintain possession. These skills encompass soloing skills and evasion skills.
    • Releasing Possession
Involves releasing the football, with either the hand or the foot. All of these skills should be performed and developed using both the left and right hand and foot.
    • Contesting Possession
Involves many of the skills used to tackle an opponent in possession, or to contest for possession when neither player is in possession of the football.

When is a strike not a strike? November 18, 2007
Posted by franklittle in Culture Gaelic Football Ireland Sport ... The Scab, The vote in favour of strike action was overwhelming. 1,881 members of the GPA were sent ballots and 1,348, or 71.6%, returned them with a Saddam like majority of over 95% in favour. Under the strike action GPA members are allowed to continue playing with their clubs and can continue to train with the county squad, but cannot play inter-country from January 1. At first glance the dispute centres over funding for inter-country players to defray the expenses incurred by playing at that level. Time away from work and family, medical and health expenses, gym memberships, extra training and so on. The Government promised a sum of 5 million Euros that would be split between the 64 inter-country senior panels with a limit of 2,800 Euros per player per annum. The deal was hammered out between the Government and the GPA directly. The core of this is that inter-county players are not employed. They do not receive a wage. They are voluntarily playing a sport that they love and enjoy. They do not have a job; they have an opportunity to live out the dreams of others and of themselves. The GPA is not a union, and the people who will play for their county teams if and when the strike goes ahead are not scabs. And, once hurling had been properly explained to him, I think Jack London would have agreed.
