Tyrone v Kerry at the All-Ireland Football Final in Gaelic Football Irish Peil Peil Gaelach or Caid ), commonly referred to as " football ", or " Gaelic " , is a form of football played mainly in Ireland . It, along with Hurling , is the most popular spectator sport in Ireland. Gaelic football is played by teams of 15 on a rectangular grass pitch with H-shaped goals at each end. The primary object is to score by kicking/striking the ball with your hand and getting it through the goals. The team with the highest score at the end of the match wins. Players advance the ball up the field with a combination of carrying, soloing (dropping and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands), kicking, and hand-passing to their team-mates. Gaelic football is one of four Gaelic games run by the Gaelic Athletic Association , the largest sporting organization in Ireland. It has strict rules on player amateurism and the pinnacle of the sport is the inter-county All-Ireland Football Final . The game is believed to have descended from ancient Irish football known as caid which dates back to 1537, although the modern game took shape in 1887.

Gaelic Football, Hurling are Irish Passions
Brian Handwerk
for National Geographic News
Updated March 17, 2003 Come March 17, many Americans and other people around the world will don green clothes, dine on corned beef and cabbage, and quench their thirst with a pint of Guinness Stout. Such rituals are part of the annual St. Patrick's Day celebration of all things Irish.
But how many of us will thrill to the grace of an athlete as he hurls the sliothar into the net for the winning goal? Or cheer battling footballers as they hand-pass and kick their way up the pitch? Email to a Friend RELATED "It's ingrained in my nature as an Irishman," said John Keane of the Gaelic Athletic Association's North American Board. "It's a tremendously important part of my heritage. (As a child) you spoke Gaelic, enjoyed the Irish music and dancing, and you played the games." While the sports are an integral part of Ireland's national heritage, he noted, their organization also makes them sources of intense local pride. Teams represent Ireland's counties, and players must have family connections to, or live and work in, the counties they represent (most players have second jobs). The free-agency system familiar to North American sports fans does not exist. "This really makes you passionate about your team, because they really do represent you," Keane said.

Gaelic Games: Hurling and Gaelic Football
gaelic football hurling links Have you ever wondered how football (soccer) would look like without offside?
Then try to watch the spectacular Gaelic games Hurling and Gaelic Football which set their highlights just when football (soccer) takes its time out: in the European summer. Although the two sports are also played in clubs, the highlight is the yearly All Ireland Championships for the 33 county selections.
Ireland is divided in 4 provinces Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster (which is Northern Ireland). Those are divided again into an unequal number of counties (Connacht 6, Leinster 12 (incl. Dublin), Munster 6, Ulster 9).
First the provinces determine their champions, then those play off the All Ireland Championship.
Those county rivalries are also a journey into the past for football fans, as passion more than money characterizes the games. Both sports are said to be very old, the championships in today's form more than 100 years.

Published by Dave at 9:23 am under Know Your Football Codes Gaelic Football For the first week of this new blog format, we’ll take a look at the six most popular football games on the planet, in no particular order but the one I choose, and give a brief overview of where they come from and where they might be going. Gaelic Athletic Association Caid during medieval times, and Caid was legalized in the Statute of Galway all the way back in 1527. The GAA was formed in 1887 to formalize the rules and build upon that old Irish tradition. may give way to 21st century reality soon (More after the jump.) One County Clare man, a teacher named Michael Cusack Archbishop Thomas Croke to create an organization that was designed to:
  • foster and promote the native Irish pastimes,
  • open athletics to all social classes, and
  • aid in the establishment of hurling and football clubs which would organise matches between counties. There are actually lots of similarities between Gaelic football and Australian football , which has sparked many a bar brawl over whether Irishmen created Aussie Rules or Aussies created Gaelic football. Up until last year, the Australians and the Irish would meet up to play something called
