FOXHUNTING IN NORTH AMERICA Home Capping Dress and Hunting Attire Kennel List ... Links Riding to hounds was brought to the North American continent in the 17 th and 18 th centuries. George Washington was among the Virginia plantation owners who kept packs of hounds and followed them on horseback; his Mount Vernon diaries contain vivid notes on his hunting. From Virginia and other states along the Eastern seaboard, hunting has spread as far west as California, Texas, Colorado, and Arizona where coyotes are the quarry. There are now over 173 member hunts (including both registered and recognized) in the U.S.A., 18 of them in North and South Carolina. © Photo by: Elizabeth Sher

The quarry animal is followed by human hunters who are usually on horses , but sometimes on foot. Proponents and participants view fox hunting as a crucial part of rural history and culture in the United Kingdom and Ireland vital for conservation and a method of pest control However, people, especially those with an interest in animal welfare or animal rights , object to it as cruel and unnecessary. The hunt generally consists of a pack of scent hounds , such as a foxhound , which will attempt to find a fox in wooded areas, called coverts (pronounced 'covers'), while under the control of a hunting team consisting of a master of fox hounds and his staff, such as a huntsman and 'whippers-in', who are in direct control of the hounds. The activity is often associated with the United Kingdom, having originated there in the 1500s, but fox hunting is also practised in other countries including

    Fox Hunting in America
Riding to hounds has been as much of a sport among well-to-do Americans as among the British gentry By CAROLINE JONES What we do know, however, is that fox hunting today still adheres to strict rules of protocol established two hundred years ago. It caters primarily to the wealthy because usually only they can afford the cost of a good hunter and the means of keeping him, not to mention the expense of properly outfitting themselves. Good hunters are customarily thoroughbreds, though not the smaller, rather slight thoroughbreds found at the racetrack. And unlike the quarter horses that are bred for speed in short stretches and are commonly seen out West, hunting thoroughbreds are often crossed with heavier breeds for endurance and solidity, are taller and more muscular, and are trained to run long distances (most hunts last all day) and jump a variety of fences and ditches. as if reviewing troops. The Squire of Mount Vernon should be leaning forward.

The old country pastime of fox-hunting met its legislative Waterloo in 2005, when an Act of Parliament came into effect that made it illegal in England and Wales, much to the exasperation and continued defiance of huntspeople throughout the country. Over the centuries, it had undoubtedly been an iconic aspect of country life, its traditions celebrated in prose and poetry, and its turns of phrase passing into general usage. Its central character, the resourceful fox itself, has been represented in traditional folk tales down the ages as a wily and dangerously clever creature, capable of "outfoxing" his many opponents. In our own day, the fox has responded to the disappearance of much of its rural habitat by setting up camp in the towns.
