Information on mounted foxhunting (aka riding to hounds), from Matt Simpson s personal perspective.

Fox Hunting
No, foxhunting isn't just an obsolete British tradition, although the sport did originate in Great Britain. But when the colonists came over here to escape the tyrannies of Bad King George, foxhunting was one of the old country traditions they just couldn't do without. It's been going strong on this side of the pond since 1650, when Colonel Robert Brooke brought hounds to Maryland from England. In fact, George Washington (father of our country, the guy on the dollar bill) was an avid foxhunter after he outgrew cutting down cherry trees. It's sort of ironic to think of him wearing a scarlet coat while his soldiers referred to the enemy soldiers as "Redcoats." Speaking of those scarlet coats, did you ever wonder why some people call them pink (or Pinque)? Jim Reeds did, and did some exhaustive research on the subject. And, as long as we're on the historical subject, check out these essays on foxhunting, written by Anthony Trollope and presented on the web by Dean Rudy. And three centuries later, while more trivial pastimes like hula hoops have come and gone, foxhunting is still going strong on both sides of the Atlantic. According to the foxhunting exhibit at the International Museum of the Horse , there are over 150 active hunts in North America, and other estimates put that number over 200. And of course, the British have an even more active

Hounded to Death
It's not only foxes who are hurt and killed in bloodsports. Horses and dogs also die in the name of a pastime which remains legal in Britain.
We'd have seen Ms. Fox hiding in the nearest hedge when she heard the hooves, and the hunters cheering the hounds on to catch her. The fox darted away, and now she's getting more out of breath every minute. Now the push is on for the horses to clear high hurdles at breakneck speed to reach the fox. "We know of many of these horses who fell and got injured, "said Ben Stewart, research officer for the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS). " The horses were then destroyed." The fast ride thrills foxhunters: "You could probably get 50 reasons from people for why they hunt, " said Patrick Martin of Bicester Kennels, who’s led foxhunts for at least seven years. "The wind in their hair. The thrill of the chase. The enjoyment of hearing the hounds. The freedom. And the countryside." One hound is shrieking in pain because he jumped onto a barbed-wire fence and can't get off. "Just about every day a hunt goes out, one of its dogs will cut his pads or tail badly on barbed wire," said Paul Gammon, press officer for the Hunt Saboteurs Association (HAS), which has witnessed and tried to save foxes' lives at tens of thousands of hunts since 1962. "When hounds chase foxes, they ignore everything else." Sometimes hounds get bloodied from brambles or broken glass. About once a season, one hound in each hunt pack will fall to his death chasing a fox to the edge of a 100-foot quarry, Gammon reported. "Hundreds of hounds have run into trains an cars and been killed," added Stewart. One train crushed eleven hounds at once.

ABOUT FOXHUNTING
AMERICAN FOXHUNTING
I NTRODUCTION

Foxhunting is the sport of mounted riders chasing wild quarry with a pack of hounds. It is a union of humans and animals in the beauty of nature's setting. Man is an observer mounted on a horse, the vehicle that allows him to follow and observe the hounds as they hunt the fox. The scenario unwinds before the foxhunters eyes and ears with the sound of the huntsman's hunting horn as hounds give chase. The fox or coyote maneuvers, circles and runs through the country cunningly evading the hounds. The music of hounds in "full cry" is laced with the sound of the horn echoing off the woodlands and hills as they pursue the quarry across plains or through woods, fields, creeks, marshes and over rock walls and fences. A crescendo o f sounds and sights that thrill you beyond imagination play out in front of you and your horse until the fox goes to ground or hounds lose the scent and the hunt is over. One can compare it to a theatrical production with mother nature the conductor and the hounds in full cry, accompanied by the hunting horn, the orchestra. Man is the audience privileged to watch, as hounds and fox or coyote, the actors, unveil the plot with never ever the same act repeated twice. Back to Top HISTORY On one occasion while congress was in session, hounds ran near the capital. Many congressmen ran outside to watch hounds and some jumped on their horses and joined the chase. The earliest established foxhound club was the Montreal Hunt in Canada 1826. In the United States, the Piedmont Foxhounds were established in Virginia in 1840. Both packs continue very successfully to this day.

PROPER ATTIRE CARTOONS Like all complex, anachronistic, and worthwhile activities, foxhunting has a lexicon all its own.
The definitions are organized into three main pages which are accessed via the main Glossary page. Some terms are illustrated with click-to-see photos. What to wear, what to wear... and when... and why. Maybe your hunt doesn't do it quite this way, but this page should give you a general idea of what "proper" means for foxhunting attire and appointments.
Perhaps I'll also get around to illustrating some of this stuff sometime. Enjoy a few dozen of the scores of foxhunting cartoons that could be found in "Punch" magazine since the mid 19thC. Some things just don't seem to change. LINKS PHOTOGRAPHS COMMANDMENTS Here's a partial list of websites for hunt clubs, foxhunting-related organizations, and sources of information.

11. Foxhunting In Virginia
The sport of foxhunting in Virginia has roots going back to the earliest settlers.
http://www.freedomfields.net/foxhunting_in_virginia.html
A Short History of Foxhunting in Virginia
George Washington, who hunted from his teens, kept his own horses and hounds for fox hunting. In fact, Nelson, his favorite mount was from his hunting stable. While so many of Washington's other mounts died from exhaustion, Nelson's conditioning as a fox hunter helped him survive the rigors of the long, hard campaigns. Another example of how tremendously fit and courageous hunt horses can be, is the story of Prince Charlie and Captain Jack Jouett of the Virginia Militia. One evening, during The Revolution, while sitting in a tavern, Captain Jouett overheard British plans to ride to Monticello that night and capture Thomas Jefferson, who was then Governor of Virginia. Captain Jouett and Prince Charlie tore across the 60 miles of countryside in the dark, arriving in time to warn Jefferson of the British forces' impending arrival and allowing him time to slip away into the surrounding forests. Although, Prince Charlie would always carry the scars from injuries sustained from falls while jumping obstacles in the dark that night, his courage and top conditioning as a hunter, probably changed the course of American history.
Fox Hunting Clubs in Virginia
There are more recognized Fox Hunting Clubs in Virginia than in any other state. The Masters of Foxhounds Association of America, the governing body of foxhunting in North America, currently lists 177 member clubs in the U.S. and Canada, some of which have been hunting for over 150 years. In addition to laying down rules of behavior for hunters, the

Is U.S. Safe From Foxhunting Debate?
Laura Howden
National Geographic News
May 31, 2002 A ban on foxhunting, proposed in England and recently passed by lawmakers in Scotland, reflects a majority view that killing animals for sport is a cruel and uncivilized pastime. The age-old tradition, spread worldwide during Great Britain's empire-building days, has its U.S. counterpart. Foxhunting in the States is steeped in tradition from the motherland, but with one important difference: The purpose is to chase, but not kill, the fox. Email to a Friend Guardian Unlimited' In the U.S. hounds are trained to pursue the fox until it goes to ground (finds cover in one of its holes). The hounds "mark" the spot by barking at the hole and are then rewarded and called away. Typically the fox is unharmed. In England hunt objectives are significantly different. Hounds that have successfully tracked a fox are trained to pull it or dig it out of its hole, and the fox is killed. The holes may also be stopped up to prevent the fox from taking cover. "England has a large number of sheep. Foxes definitely have a toll on young lambs, and the terrain is perfect to encourage overly large [fox] populations," said Lt. Col. Dennis Foster (Ret.), executive director of the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America (MFHA). One of the main arguments behind the pro-hunt movement in England is that foxhunters perform a social service by culling foxes.

Georgette Heyer Fox-Hunting Assheson Smith was one of the leading huntsmen of his day - even Napoleon had heard of and admired him. He was obviously a tough customer; literally throwing himself and horse over every fence, and fearing nothing. He was known for cramming his fences, ie pushing the horse at the fence, and was a role model for all the Corinthians and young bucks. Obviously the equivalent of today's fast driver, a menace to all else on the road (or field). The Melton Men were members of the hunts that met at various meets in Leicestershire (roughly the middle of England) which included the Quorn, the Belvoir, the Pytchley.
Although fox hunting has declined, an annual hunt is still held on New Year's Day in Melton Market Place. Three hunts have territories which intersect at Melton Mowbray: Quorn, Cottesmore and Belvoir. The hunting season runs from November to March. The town is hoping to have a complete museum devoted to hunting and its role in the country. Displays are already available for viewing in the Carnegie Museum. http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/foxman/index.htm

Are you a minesweeper maniac? Then you've got to check out this game. Absolutely new idea. Nice interface with animation.
The game field is divided into cells and has 10 cells vertically and horizontally. There can be 4 to 9 foxes depending on the complexity level. Foxes do not leave their holes (i.e. cells).
You can check any cell by clicking on any mouse button. The digit which appears in the cell indicates the number of foxes you can see from the cell. As shown in the picture there are eight possible directions (vertical, horizontal and diagonal).
The bottom panel shows the number of moves made and the number of foxes not detected yet. You make a move clicking on a cell. There can be more than one fox in the same hole and in order to trap them all you have to click on the cell again. The goal of the game is to catch all the foxes at the minimum number of moves.

From the 2006 International Foxhunting Exchange The Blessing of the Hounds
By Linda Hagerman Fall is nearly upon us again, and I thought that I would tell you a little holiday story about the "Blessing of the Hounds." A lot of people have asked me how the celebration began and just who was this St. Hubert fellow anyway? In the late autumn around the time of our opening day's hunt, we have a hunt called "Blessing of the Hounds." It comes with all the fanfare of scarlet coats, tailed coats (shadbellies), top hats, well turned out horses, and a priest that conducts a church service from a platform outdoors in the middle of the gathering of foxhunters and the hounds. Most members can't explain the why or where this tradition came from, but the story begins in the middle ages with the tale of St. Hubert.
Hubert of Liege (656-727) pursued a life of color, with a passion for horses, hounds, and the pleasure of the chase. I think the chase was supposed to be after the stag, but some accounts say he also used the chase as a reason to enjoy strong drink and the company of women we would say had "less than stellar reputations." One year, Hubert hosted a grand hunt in the woodlands of France near Ardennes, completely ignoring the fact that it was to be held on the morning of Good Friday.
Lost with the music of the hounds and a breathless gallop through the woods, he was in pursuit of a stag. As he continued over a rise in the forest, he was stunned by the vision that appeared to him: the hunted stag in statuesque glory. The Cross of our Lord appeared in blinding radiation suspended from on top of his antlers!!! No baying hounds, no squawking birds, only complete silence from all creatures mute in the presence of God.

    A Foxhunting Jamboree
Reprinted from Homing In column in 73 Magazine, January 1997 When did you first hear about radio direction finding (RDF)? Since it has become a tool for finding downed aircraft and stolen cars, today's school kids probably get a vague notion of it early on. Sadly, they aren't told that it can also be great fun for them. A recent e-mail exchange with Tom Stewart K3TS brought back memories of my introduction to RDF. Tom wrote a classic article about two-meter hidden transmitter hunting in New Jersey for the September 1957 issue of QST. I was 10 years old at the time and studying for my ham ticket, faithfully trying to copy W1AW code practice every night on my drifty Hallicrafters S-38D receiver. That QST issue was one of my first ham radio magazines. Tom's tales of T-hunt trickery got me eager to try the sport. When my Novice license arrived the following spring, I agitated at the radio club in our town of 11,000 souls to get the group to hold some hidden transmitter hunts. Even though Novices had two-meter phone privileges at the time, we were a hundred miles from the nearest two-meter activity and there were no repeaters to bridge the gap. Finally, the club scheduled a hunt on 75 meter AM, where most mobile operating was done in those days. I somehow managed to lash together a two-tube 75-meter converter with vibrator power supply and connect it to the broadcast receiver in the family's gas-guzzler convertible. Of course I had to talk Dad into driving. Bemused by the whole thing, he agreed.
