Radio Controlled Flying Disc Glider
I 've been tossing around the idea of building a working prototype of a controllable flying disc for a few years, and this page is the repository for information as I come to it. I'm currently leaning toward control with synthetic jets (as described in the literature by Potts and Crowther). I'm sure people have built similar things, but I haven't been able to find references to them.
Design goals
  • maintain the same basic shape and look of a normal disc; where "normal disc" is a 175g Ultimate disc. This is in contrast to the approach taken by Yates and Brown (see below) where they attached a gimballed control surface to the disc and had a tail hanging off the back which didn't rotate. I'd like the control to be as internal to the disc as possible. Design with sufficient ruggedness that the disc could survive quite a few 'crashes' and rough catches in a typical playing session. My concern here is that much of the prior work is either munitions-based (where metrics for success include destruction on impact) or UAV-based, where the craft is potentially much larger or externally powered and can be recovered in a controlled manner. Regardless of the potential uses, my goal is to build a toy which is fun to play with and demonstrates some technical proficiency :)
Obvious challenges
  • Cheap Off the Shelf (COTS) radio control components typically have crystal-based receivers with fragile crystals that don't take too well to repeated impacts. This isn't that big of a deal and could be mitigated with good packaging or alternate receiver designs.

62. New, Improved Flying Disc Developed
Adler s first unsuccessful effort, in fact, was an attempt to design a better flying disc. Every few years, he returned to the subject.

NEWS RELEASE CONTACT: Stanford University News Service (415) 723-2558
New, improved flying disc developed
STANFORD It has taken Alan Adler more than 20 years, but he finally has come up with an improvement on the flying disc. The "Aerobie Superdisc," as he is calling his new design, has been in production by his small, family-owned company, Superflight, for almost a month, and is just beginning to appear in toy and sporting goods stores, Adler said. This is the fourth flying toy that Adler, a lecturer in mechanical engineering at Stanford University, has developed and marketed. His aerobie flying ring set the Guinness world record for the farthest thrown object when it was hurled 1,257 feet in 1985. In 1987, he introduced a triangular boomerang, and, in 1993, he marketed a toy football with fins that allows almost anyone to throw a perfect bullet pass. Many of the prototypes for these inventions were made in the mechanical engineering workshop on campus and first tested on Stanford's Roble athletic field. "After years of building instrumentation systems for military aircraft and nuclear reactors, I wanted to make something that ordinary people could use and enjoy," says the electrical engineer-turned-inventor. He had taught himself basic aerodynamics in order to design sailboats. So, in the mid-1970s, he decided to turn his talents to designing innovative flying toys.

Alaska Science Forum
August 22, 1996 Fun with Physics, Starring the Flying Disc
Article #1299 by Ned Rozell This article is provided as a public service by the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, in cooperation with the UAF research community. Ned Rozell is a science writer at the institute. You don't have to understand the physics of the flying disc to throw a great "hammer," but it certainly doesn't hurt. At least that's the case with Peter Delamere, a Geophysical Institute graduate student who's one of the best flying disc flingers in Fairbanks. He hurls backhands, forehands, and the hammer, an overhead release that travels quite a distance upside-down before dropping like a lead sinker into the stinging hands of a receiver. Delamere, who studies space physics at the Geophysical Institute, is one of a half dozen other G.I. grad students who play Ultimate, a game like football or soccer except players sling a flying disc instead of a ball. Applying a spin is crucial to the flight of a flying disc (which I would call a "Frisbee" if that word wasn't a trademark of Wham-O). Delamere demonstrated this fact by pushing his 175-gram flying disc through the air as if he was tossing a shot put. The non-rotating disc fluttered to the ground like an overyellow birch leaf. As Michael Gold pointed out in the essay "The Fairy Tale Physics of Frisbees," a flying disc can be considered a combination gyroscope and airplane wing. A gyroscope is a spinning mass that tends to be stable because of that spin. The faster an object spins and the heavier it is at the outer edges (where most of the weight in a flying disc is), the more steadily it holds its course.

It's a Flying Disc, a UFO, No - It's a Frisbee!
In 1937, Walter (Fred) Morrison, and his future wife to be Lucile Nay, started tossing a metal popcorn can lid around in the yard on Thanksgiving Day. They found that by sailing it with some wrist action they could control it pretty well. They tried pie pans and even a few cake pans. They worked so well, that they even sold a few.
Then World War II came and everything was forgotten about. Morrison was a fighter pilot in the war. But in the back of his mind, he knew that someday he would apply his knowledge of aerodynamics and build a better disc. It was about this time that the use of plastic started to evolve. The plastic was durable and light weight.
In 1947, Morrison teamed with Warren Franscioni, another Army Air Force Pilot, and made plastic discs. Franscioni provided the money needed to produce an injected mold and found a company to make their Flying Discs. The pair promoted their discs everywhere. They went over exceptionally well at the Beaches. Soon they were selling the Discs all over the country. In 1950, they parted ways.
Franscioni re-enlisted into the service but, kept selling Disc and collecting royalties. He continued this way until the mid 1960's.
