I've been bowling on and off for over 20 years, more off than on. I have bowled on a league for the last 5 years. With their help, my average is now over 180 (from under 100). I prefer 5-pin bowling, but I have tried 10-pin. My last 10-pin score was about 115. My highest single 5-pin game has been 311, and my highest triple, 823. I've made a lot of friends during my years on a league. It's a great way to get some exercise (especially stretching exercises), socialize with new friends and still be sober. Two hours at a bowling alley works out to cheaper than taking the family to the movies, or going to a bar. I've found a website for Saskatchewan Bowling at www.bowling.sk.ca .It's a good place to start for local information. Other sites are: www.rpi.edu/~miller3/bowling.html

An Introduction To Bowling
Posted under Bowling GAMES on Nov 27, 2007 Of all the indoor sports, perhaps bowling is the most popular. Surprisingly since the game may be one of the oldest, if not the oldest sport in history. Undeniably, too, bowling is the number one participatory sport in the US. Bowling is a game of scoring points by knocking down pins with balls. Fundamentally, a player rolls a heavy bowling ball into a flat surface to knock down arranged pins of nine or ten, depending on the game you play. There are several forms of bowling; some are played indoors which usually uses a lane or a long flat polished wood surface with gutters along the length of the lane. Primary examples of these indoor types are the feather bowling, duckpin bowling, candlepin bowling, ninepin skittles, five pin bowling and the most popular form of bowling which is the Ten-pin. Ten-pin bowling is very similar to the other forms, except the game obviously uses ten pins which the player should attempt to knock down as many pins possible to score points. The game has ten frames with each frame consisting two rolls for each competing player. Another popular bowling variant is the Five-pin bowling which is often played in Canada. It is a recent modification of Ten-pin bowling but instead of two attempts, Five-pin has three attempts, and each attempt can be thrown in quick succession.

An indexing mechanism drives the distributor incrementally about a vertical axis and the distributor includes pick-up mechanisms to grip pins off the distributor feeding system. A guide plate combines with the pick-up mechanisms to position the pins in bowling array as the rotor turns. Separate and distinct setting and clearing mechanisms are provided to respectively strip pins off the distributor and place the pins on the playing surface, and to raise pins off the playing surface while the surface is swept to remove fallen pins. Junior Bowling Programs
Kids bowling on Saturday and/or Sunday mornings in an organized and monitored junior bowling program are the future of our sport.
I grew up in a junior bowling program that bowled on Saturday mornings. That was the greatest thing that could have happened because it took me off the streets and away from getting into trouble. My circle of friends changed from the government housing arena to a group bowling in an organized, well-coached, and chaperoned club.
The head coach became my surrogate father and he made sure that we worked hard to remain in the club. Our report cards and all school work went to him first so that our eligibility for continued membership rested in our hands. Very simply, if you wanted to continue in the kids bowling program, you made sure you had passing grades.
From 1960 through 1966, youth bowling was organized nationwide under the American Junior Bowling Congress (AJBC) and later, the Youth Bowling Association (YBA). This would later become the current Young American Bowling Alliance (YABA). Regardless of the governing body, getting kids involved with an organized junior bowling program from a young age helps them to develop into responsible adults having learned about teamwork, organization and taking leadership.
By age groups and divisions, a good program will have elected officers such as President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. This helps the youngsters to build their self-esteem and develop their sense of responsibility. They are taught bowling etiquette and courtesy, help to increase their math skills learning how to keep a score sheet manually, and learn general respect for each other and the bowling accessories and equipment. Learning how to socialize with their peers is another important aspect of them belonging to a kids bowling program.
