Bahay Kubo and the Filipino Concept of Space
Under one roof
By Augusto F. Villalon
A traditional bahay kubo which can still be seen in most rural areas of the Philippines
THE WAY we live tells us who we are, so our homes are dead giveaways. The way we arrange our homes show how we like to live and how we relate to the other people who live with us. The positioning of furniture and choice of embellishments are personal choices. However, the arrangement of the different spaces inside a house and their varying degrees of privacy
demonstrate the lifestyle patterns of each culture.
The traditional bahay kubo follows the centuries-old Southeast Asian rural archetype of the single-room dwelling where all family activities happen in one space. After sleeping mats are
rolled up in the mornings, the same space is given over to daytime activities that sometimes spill outdoors to the shaded areas underneath the house.
The rural bahay kubo evolved into the bahay na bato , where the size of the house was enlarged but much of the single-room lifestyle remained. It was not uncommon for sleeping mats to be

ARTicles Artist Interview: Marcel Belleza Antonio: by Christiane de la Paz The works of Marcel Antonio belong to an expressive and non-literary tradition of storytelling. He began his career in 1983 while still a sophomore in the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts. He was talented and his art had a sense of magical realism, brimming with quirky contemporary mythologies through a feminine point of view. Much later, he very much impressed his professors and others with whom he came into contact.Through the years, Marcel Antonio’s career soared high and his works became deeply embedded in the viewer’s collective consciousness. Now at age 41, Marcel Antonio in this interview talks about his beginnings, his art, his progress and development as a young artist of note, and a preview of his very personal life.... LEE MAS...

If you think bringing in a sculpture exhibition to Singapore means importing huge and heavy blobs of bronze or marble – think again. A group of contemporary Filipino artists, including Cecilia Avancena, Gerardo Tan, Katya Guerrero, Sid Hildawa and After Liwayway Recapping Co., prove that sculpture can be conceived and practised otherwise – creating art works that are small and light, but capable of expanding once installed in the designated space. When the exhibition is over, these works can then be packed and shipped again in a small container 110cm x 110cm x 92cm to the next destination. According to curators Judy Freya Sibayan and Matt Price, the idea and title for the exhibition came out of a very practical concern – how to transport works of art from on country to another at low cost. General Manager of Sculpture Square, Tay Swee Lin, set one basic restriction for the artists: that they should find their own funding to ship the works from Manila to Singapore and then back again. "Working within these logistical and financial constraints, artists are challenged to come up with creative solutions without contradicting or compromising their practice," Tay notes. The result? Art that though visually small, embodies complex ideas. Sibayan elaborates: "Each of these pieces questions the system of production, circulation, distribution and reception of art, and ultimately, expands the boundaries of art and the imagination."

Escrima - The Filipino Martial Art
By: George Royal
Escrima is a popular Filipino martial art dating back to the 1500s, during the colonization of the Philippine Islands by the Spanish. Escrima is a very simplified but practical form of combat technique originally designed as a self-defense tool. Escrima is also known by many other names such as Eskrima, Arnis, Arnis de Mano, Kali and FMA (Filipino Martial Art). Because of its effectiveness, Escrima is also taught extensively in many Special Forces including the Navy Seals and Army Special Forces.
Brief History:
Many believe that Escrima or Filipino Martial Art originated from Chinese influenced Indonesian fighting tactics such as Kun Tao, Chuan Fa and Tai Chi double stick forms. Others believe the Escrima art form to be wholly developed by the Filipino people. However, the most plausible explanation seems to be rooted in the history of the Spanish colonization.
When the Spanish occupied the Philippine Islands, a form of art similar to Escrima had already existed but was only recreational. However, this art began to develop into a more martial discipline when the Spanish prohibited indigenous Filipino weapons such as the Bolo (machete), daggers and fighting sticks in the 1700s. It remained a clandestine art until the Americans took over in 1898. From then on, the Filipino Martial Art started to gain recognition and popularity.

    Filipino Art on French Walls
The French have a long and proud tradition of association with the visual arts with many 19th and 20th Century French artists being household names throughout the world. Who has not heard of Monet, Degas or Duchamp to mention just three? Less well known is the 17th Century French printmaker Jacques Callot. His innovations improved etching to such an extent that his work became a favored collectable of the Dutch master Rembrandt, a formidable printmaker in his own right.
Behind the information desk and a little to its right is a lithograph by national artist Jerry Elizaide Navarro. It is a1999 untitled commedia dell'arte inspired rendering of the comic/tragic theatre masks. Where the comic mask wears a salacious leer and the tragic mask questions the audience, it is a delightfully whimsical reading of the age old clich©.

Philippine Culture
This is the one thing that separates us from the rest of the world - our colorful and lively culture that makes us distinctly Filipino. This includes traditions, language, arts, etc. which are found in museums, churches and galleries, found within the heart of the key cities.
Most provinces have their own identifying folk dances too wherein they showcase the elegance and beauty of the way we do things, the way we dress, the way we see things as shown in different paintings, as we have been influenced by events that happened in our history.
