Halford E. Jones Filipino Martial Arts Collection
The Hawaii Karate Museum is very proud to feature materials on the Filipino Martial Arts donated by Halford E. Jones. Here in Hawaii, there is considerable cross training among the various arts. Many Kenpo Karate instructors, for example, also studied Escrima. Many Okinawan Karate instructors also studied, lived and were even born in the Philippines. The Halford E. Jones Filipino Martial Arts Collection gives us a glimpse into the diverse martial arts of the Philippines. Please visit this page often as we continue to list materials. About Halford E. Jones. Halford E. Jones considers himself a martial arts enthusiast, a sometimes practitioner of martial arts, and an occasional writer on the subject. He has been fortunate enought to meet some of 'THE FATHERS': The Father of American Karate, The Father of Philippine Karate, the Father of Malaysian Karate, the Father of American Kenpo, and the Father of Modern Arnis, whom everyone should know, he says, if they have done their homework. Aside from that, Jones started his formal lessons in Judo in 1959 at a YMCA in Morristown, New Jersey, and when, time permitted, during his term of military service, where he found out about Karate and Aikido. Prior to all this, everything had been impromptu and sporadic, from childhood upwards. In 1963, he caught a gllimpse of Karate, Aikido, Kendo, Jiujitsu, Sumo, etc. while spending three months in Hawaii, mostly on the Big Island, and then went to the Philippines until 1965, after which he traveled to Hong Kong, Cambodia, Burma, India, Egypt, Jordan (Jersusalem), Lebanon, Greece, Italy, and Spain. He returned to the Philippines for another two years (1966 to 1968), then returned to the US after visiting Japan, and then returned to the Philippines in 1972, shortly after martial law had been declared by President Marcos. He remained there for about eight years and returned to the US in 1981. Since that time, he has taken three trips back.

The Filipino Martial Art of Eskrima
Tiffany Canonigo
Introduction
Historians have revealed as many as 200 styles of this martial art, styles that describe the different range of fighting. Some of these different styles include Largo, Medio, and Serrada (corto), which mean long, medium, and close range fighting. Other names are based on the movements, which include Abanyko (fanning), Palis-Palis (go with the force), Sungkiti (flicking), Ocho-Ocho (figure eight), and Lastico (snapping). The choice of weapon used is another way to determine another system of classifying this martial art. One may use a single or double stick, (solo, doble or sinawali), a sword or a dagger (espada y daga) or even nothing at all, (mano mano or de kadina).
History
In this paper, I have chosen to discuss two well-known styles of eskrima, Doce Pares style and Balitawak, because they come from the same style of teaching. I will briefly discuss the principles of the Doce Pares style and explain the training using the different range of fighting, the instruments and techniques used, the angles of attack, and the Balintawak style of performance.
Balitawak Eskrima
The weapon used, not only in this style of eskrima but in all styles and teachings, is the stick called an olise. It is usually made of rattan, which is a tough, fibrous vine. Other types of wood used for eskrima are palm wood or bahi, ironwood or kamagong, and guava wood. The length of the stick should be as long as your arm, from your armpit to the tips of your fingers. The light weight of the stick allows you to move rapidly against your opponent. In many cases, martial arts instructors teach students to use their hands for defense in the beginning of their training, but in eskrima, instructors emphasize the use of the weapon first, then empty-handed fighting later.

In the Philippines, combat training methods developed to a level of efficiency unsurpassed anywhere in the world. There are over 7,000 islands in the Philippine archipelago with over 78 major languages spoken. The Filipino Martial Arts are as diverse as the islands themselves.
Kali, Escrima, Arnis and Silat are just a few of the many names used to describe the Filipino Martial Arts. These arts encompass an entire spectrum of weaponry and also feature sophisticated empty hands including boxing, trapping and grappling. Under constant siege by the Spanish, the Southern Philippines remained unconquered for nearly 400 years due to the efficiency of the deadly and combat-proven martial arts of this region.
Unlike most martial art systems, both weaponry and empty hands are taught together because the principles are common to both and are inter-changeable. Armed or unarmed, the student learns to relate to any situation using the same concepts of body angling, positioning and flowing. Depending on speed, footwork and skill rather than brute strength, this fluid and practical method of self-defense is one of the most comprehensive martial art systems known.
