SAMAHAN PHILIPPINE DANCE COMPANY HISTORY The Samahan Philippine Dance Company was organized in July 1974 under the direction of Lolita Di oso Carter, Ph.D. Dr. Carter, a dance instructor at Grossmont College El Cajon , CA. at that time, volunteered her services to organize a performing ensemble as a contribution to the growing Philippine Community of San Diego. Her knowledge of Philippine Dance and Music came naturally from her experiences growing up in the Philippines and being involved in all facets of Filipino life in a small town including activities of a large extended family, church and its numerous religious observances, school programs and community celebrations specially town fiestas. Formal education in Philippine Folk Dance at the University of the Philippines and classes with Francisca Reyes Aquino, eminent authority on Philippine Folk Dance provided Carter with a solid background in Philippine Folk Dance. The Samahan Philippine Dance Company started out as part of the Youth Program of the Council of Pilipino-American Organizations of San Diego County . The purpose of the program was to provide Filipino youth opportunity to gain knowledge and appreciation of their cultural heritage. The name Samahan (meaning working together) was selected by the participants who were mostly students from area junior and senior high schools and San Diego State University . The educational and recreational program soon became an amateur performing group besieged with requests for performances from various organizations, institutions and individuals.

Like way out of the way. [Podcast: Physical challenges don't stop Filipino American martial arts master.] The blur of hands wielding wide, stocky knives interspersed with flashes of reflected sunlight is a hypnotic, fluid movement. It's a bit like watching a finely choreographed dance. But what Bonjoc is demonstrating is the little-known Philippine martial art of escrima . The other difference: He does it from the seat of his wheelchair or with the aid of crutches. The 46-year-old escrima master was born with spina bifida, a congenital spinal cord defect that can affect the lower body and result in paralysis, yet he doesn't tolerate pity.

Mabisa martial arts, the effective expression of filipino martial arts eskrima and silat.

Home FMA history Instructor Clips ... Contact Us Mabisa is a Tagalog word that means effectively doing what was intended. The root word bisa is translated as reaction. Effective reactions are what Mabisa Martial Arts is all about. This is the best way to describe the warrior arts passed on to me by my teachers. Mabisa Martial Arts are strongly influenced by the Filipino Martial Arts (Eskrima), and Malay (Silat). Adding boxing-like energy to training adds an extra element of reality to Mabisa. Drills are progressive, so the trainee can work up to develop both speed and technique in single direct attacks, combinations, and multiple opponents. John is an instructor under Sifu Blaise Loong (Yashai Warcraft-Patayin Estilo) and also Guro under Master Yuli Romo (Bahad Zu'Bu Eskrima) For more information contact John Brown at: info@mabisamartialarts.com

This system is best described as the difference between a Bachelors and Master degree of education. The quotes below create foundation, integrity and character. The nature of knife wounds 2
One of the most common misconceptions I noticed regarding most knife training is the continued belief in the one stab – one kill myth. One attacker thrusts toward the defender, who respond by either evading or deflecting the knife while replying with a stab or slash to the attacker, who simply stands in place while the knife is planted cleanly onto the targeted spot on his body.
As I mentioned in my earlier post, people hardly die instantly from a single knife wound. I can think of less than 5 spots on the body that will instantly stop an attacker when hit with a knife. Those target points are not difficult to get to, which is actually a testament to how well our bodies have somehow evolved to protect these vital points.

I initially did not want to teach because I didn’t want to make my former Instructor, Grandmaster Gaudiosa Ruby of the COMJUKA - Kali Systems USA, angry at me and accuse me of teaching her system of Filipino Martial Arts. I also did not want to have “just” another Filipino Martial Arts school , since there are at least four other schools in El Paso.

Filipino Kali teaches weapons fighting before bare hand to hand combat as they do in other martial art styles. For example, a student in any Chinese martial arts is expected to master hand to hand combat before moving on to any form of weapons. Definition: martial art specializing in fighting with two baton-length sticks, with techniques adaptable to empty-hand or edged weapons. The terms "escrima" is thought to originate from the Spanish word "escrime", meaning to fence with a swoardand is thought to have originated during the Spanish occupation of the Phillipine Islands. Often used synonymously for arnis and kali.

Integrity, Honor and Tradition The International Serrada Eskrima Society was created in 1993 to honor GM Angel’s lifetime work and dedication to the Filipino Martial Arts.  Cabales Serrada Escrima was created by Grandmaster Angel Cabales Grandmaster Angel spent his life developing and teaching his art worldwide.  Only a few have received certificates to teach his dynamic and powerful fighting art.  Honor, integrity and tradition can be found in every class Guro Michael G. Davis and Prof. Madeline maintain the traditional Serrada teachings.  ISES students are guaranteed from a lineage of the 1 st generation instructors. Many of them are trying to find their own way to the top, or so they could call it their own. That's ok, everyone tries to find their own way. But the world knows that for SERRADA it really came from me. Maybe they change it a little bit, so they can say its their own. Sometimes they add other technique, make it like spaghetti. But what I teach is what I learned; straight SERRADA, no mixing or anything like that.” Quote by GM Angel There are numerous Serrada Escrima groups, organizations worldwide.  ISES encourages all members to build strong and respectful relationships with other schools.   It’s in our UNITY that we can secure the future of Serrada for generations to come.

Remy A. Presas' Modern Arnis
This page is devoted to one of the arts we teach separately at Tye's Kung Fu ; i.e. Modern Arnis . Currently, we offer classes in Remy Presas' Modern Arnis twice weekly:
Sat 7-9pm, and Sun 5-7pm
The location is Montoya's Shorin Kempo Karate School , at 2603 Rountree in Bryan, TX. Modern Arnis and I met years ago, when Guro Eric Alexander (Lakan Tatlo - 3rd degree black belt) gave me my first taste of the art. Since then, I have studied under Professor Remy Presas himself, and have worked out with a few of his close students, including Master Dr. Randi Schea, and Guro Raymond Montoya (Lakan Dalawa - 2nd degree black belt). In 1997, Professor Presas awarded Lakan Dalawa (2nd degree black belt) rank in Modern Arnis. At the request of the Professor, I founded the TAMU Modern Arnis Club here at in 1995. When I teach, I emphasize flow, real-life applications (i.e. convince me this'd work ), disarms and joint-work. I've found that my Modern Arnis training has helped in my understanding and application of kung fu as well - kind of a cross-pollination. One of the single best training tools in GM Presas' system is Tapi-Tapi, with all its variation, free-flowingness, and applications put in - WONDERFUL!
