About this project: Ferreting out who, what and why
For this project, we needed to do three things: Find the sealed files. Figure out who's suing whom. Find out who sealed the file, and why. Finding the files The clerk's office at King County Superior Court doesn't keep a list of sealed court cases. So we searched for indicators. The state Administrative Office of the Courts helped. It ran computer searches of electronic court dockets, looking for docket codes or words (for example, "seal" or "confidential") that suggested a case had been sealed in whole or part. These runs kicked up thousands of cases going back to 1990. (We were looking only for civil lawsuits, such as medical-malpractice cases. The searches did not cover divorce or criminal cases.) We then checked the cases at the courthouse. You type a case number into the computer, and if the case is sealed, a message pops up, denying access. We also checked older files that had been shelved instead of scanned into the computer. We walked down rows of files at the clerk's office, looking for yellow folder-sized markers that indicate a case is sealed and locked away in a separate room.

Ferreting out plagiarism
Lecturer : Would you photocopy someone else's essay, put your name on the top and hand it in for marking?
Students : No! That's plagiarism.
Lecturer : In that case, would you retype someone else's essay, put your name on the top and hand it in for marking?
Students : Oh, yes. That's perfectly legitimate.
Okay, I just made that up. But it's not hugely removed from the World As We Know It. Anyone who has marked student assignments at any level will be familiar with the extent of plagiarism. It's hardly rare.
But the digital world has also made it an absolute doddle for markers to detect plagiarism. No longer do we have to rely on the sudden change in voice to indicate a second author. Programs like Turnitin do it for us. They check submitted work by scouring the internet for matching text, calculating the similarity and linking to the sources. Since students are often allowed to run their work through the program beforehand, they can check that it's okay before handing it in. The results are even colour-coded for convenience: green is fine, orange is a bit dodgy and red is run for the hills. And

Anti-Spam and Ferreting out sending email addresses If you are the target of spam or email abuse, save all correspondence and forward it, with FULL HEADERS, to the abuse, support, postmaster and root addresses of the abuser's provider. It's best not to engage these abusers personally in any way. Use the information from the following files to read headers and track down the senders' providers.
  • To view full headers:
In Pegasus Mail, choose "READER" from the options menu bar. Listed as an option is: "Show all Headers". In Mail, choose "OPTIONS" from the options menu bar. Listed as an option is: "Show Headers" - then choose full headers.
In Eudora Mail, open the message. Under the title bar are four options. The second from the left is a box which says "Blah, Blah, Blah." Click on that and all headers will be shown. For more info, see the Eudora Page:
    Eudora Email Program Problems
In Outlook Express , open the message. Choose "File" from the options menu bar. Listed as an option is: "properties". Another window will open, showing two tabs. You want to choose the one titled "Details". Then cut and paste the headers into the message you want to forward. For more info, see the Microsoft page:

We're not sure how many he has - they just keep moving! A lot of people don't like ferrets, but we love them. Check out some the pictures in the ferret gallery and you'll soon see why.... Some people keep ferrets for catching rabbits, others like to have them as a household pet. Forget anything you have read about ferrets being dirty or smelly, they are very clean and can be a lot of fun. Ferrets can even be fashionable - they are real popular in the USA right now. Californians have pet ferrets even though it is illegal to keep them at home! If you don't believe me, click on this little convict to read about their campaign for ferret legalization in California. So why does my Dad keep ferrets?

    Ferreting Out The First Stars
What did the very first stars look like? How did they live and die? Astronomers have ideas, but no proof. The first stars are so distant and formed so long ago that they are invisible to our best telescopes.
Until they explode. Hypernovas (more powerful cousins of supernovas) and their associated gamma-ray bursts offer astronomers the possibility of detecting light from the first generations of stars. Image: Shown in this artist's conception, the universe's first stars were behemoths that guzzled fuel faster than an SUV, dying quickly and explosively. NASA's Swift satellite may detect the resulting gamma-ray bursts, opening a new window onto the early history of the cosmos. Credit: David A. Aguilar (CfA)
NASA's Swift satellite already has seen a gamma-ray burst (GRB) with a redshift of 6.29, meaning that the progenitor star exploded about 13 billion years ago, when the universe was less than a billion years old. Theorists Volker Bromm (University of Texas at Austin) and Avi Loeb (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) predict that one-tenth of the blasts Swift will spot during its operational lifetime will come from stars at a redshift of 5 or greater, that lived and died during the first billion years of the universe.
"Most of those GRBs will come from second generation or later stars," said Loeb. "But if we get lucky, Swift may even detect a burst from one of the very first stars that formed a star made of only hydrogen and helium."
