Home What's New About Us Mission ... Global Raptor Info Network The Archives of Falconry Preserving Our Falconry Heritage May 200
Goal:
Collect and conserve evidence of the history of falconry worldwide and document the role of falconers in raptor conservation. Falconers have played a significant role in our understanding of raptor biology and raptor conservation. As American falconers realized that the physical evidence of their history was being lost as early practitioners passed away, The Peregrine Fund founded the Archives of American Falconry in 1986. Donated materials reflected the international origins of American falconry, and with the new millennium we changed the name to The Archives of Falconry (TAF). Results The international aspects of TAF dominated our activities this year, particularly construction of our new Sheikh Zayed Arab Falconry Heritage Wing. Almost doubling our square footage, this stunning display juxtaposes the heritage of one of the oldest of the world’s falconry cultures with our own American heritage—one of the youngest. The wing is the culmination of three years of collaborative work to accurately display the modern as well as historic heritage of Arab falconry. The project was made possible by significant funding from H.H. Sheikh Mohamad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, son of the late founder of the United Arab Emirates and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

How did people hunt before the invention of the gun?
Unknown to most, man has hunted with raptors for over 4000 years.
Now you can experience the incredible connection
between man and wild animal. Falconry hunts are conducted on the Gunflint Trail and in the Grand Marais-North Shore of Lake Superior area. We operate from mid October through the end of February. Our mission is to help human beings realize the realities of our natural world. Whether it's through our educational or natural hunting programs, we'll educate you about birds of prey, our environment and the harsh struggle all wild creatures must endure to survive. Our Redtail Hawk and hunting companion holding onto her first grouse caught with humans. Birds of prey, also known as "raptors", were replaced by the gun and other mechanized items as hunting weapons. Falconry, sometimes called "hawking," requires an incredible amount of time and energy, not to mention a special use permit to capture, possess and hunt with a wild animal. Intriguing enough, it is the thrill of the chase, not the kill, why we hunt with a bird of prey. Services offered: Educational Programs including slide shows and flying bird programs. Offered all year.

Visitor's Online: 1 Welcome
The Pennsylvania Falconry and Hawk Trust (PFHT) is a group of dedicated individuals that have bonded together due to their love of raptors and the sport of falconry. Falconry is a hunting sport that is defined as "The hunting of wild quarry with trained raptors." However the PFHT and falconers everywhere are much more than sportsman. They are conservationists, especially when it comes to the well-being of raptors. This can best be stated with excerpts from our Constitution and Bylaws.
"In order to improve, aid, encourage competency in the art and practice of falconry among interested persons..."
"..to promote conservation of the birds of prey, their care, welfare, and training; to urge recognition of falconry as a legal field sport; and to establish traditions which will aid, perpetuate, and further the welfare of falconry and the raptors it employs."

No previous experience is necessary and the school caters for all ages and abilities. Be sure to bring your camera - flying a hawk is the experience of a lifetime!
Our aim is to share with you the pleasure and excitement of falconry, a fascination that has enthralled people for 4,000 years. We specialise in teaching falconry sessions using our beautiful Harris hawks, but in addition to hawks the school is home to a variety of other Birds Of Prey, all of which have been specially bred in captivity and are flown free daily. This exclusive collection of birds of prey is not on view to the public and the school is open by appointment only, however, bookings can usually be accommodated at a moment's notice. Under the shelter of the magnificent woodlands surrounding the school, falconry can be booked whatever the weather. Falconry is an ancient art, reputed to be the oldest sport in the world. Originating in the Far East around 2000BC, as a means of catching food for yourself and your family, falconry spread Westwards reaching the shores of Europe long before the end of the first Millennium.

INTRODUCTION
My name is Roy Priest. I live in Cloverdale, beautiful British Columbia, Canada. I was introduced to falconry through a Sportsman's Show in 1963. George Galicz, a well known local falconer, was exhibiting his birds of prey. I was mesmerized by the beautiful male Kestrel he had on display. George let me hold it on my bare hand and I was hooked. In order to be able to have a bird like that he told me I had to join the B.C. Falconry Association and get permission from my parents. They were used to me bringing all manner of animals home and readily agreed. The first bird I trained was a Red-tailed Hawk. That particular bird was probably the tamest bird I ever had. We were inseparable. Since that time I have flown Kestrels, Red tails, Peregrines, Prairies, Merlins, Luggers, Coopers, Harris and Goshawks in B.C., Lanners in England and Merlins and Prairies in Saskatchewan. While in Saskatchewan I assisted in the release of Peregrines in Downtown Regina . There had been successful releases in Saskatoon and this was to be Regina's first. I acted as a hack attendant, feeding and tracking the birds for about 2 months.

Woodenbridge, Arklow, County Wicklow, Ireland Falconry Ireland is pleased to offer our visitors the opportunity to engage hands-on in this most ancient of field sports. We invite you to watch the fascinating sport of falconry come alive in the beautiful surroundings of Woodenbridge, deep in the Garden of Ireland. Our falconry is situated in rolling countryside on the banks of the historic Goldmines river, less than 2 hours from Dublin city centre. It is home to a variety of birds of prey used for falconry. Woodenbridge and its environs boast a long tradition in the pursuit of country sports and pastimes, so it is only fitting that falconry, one of the oldest of field sports, now flourishes in this most beautiful countryside. Apart from the active practice of falconry, we offer an important educational and photographic facility where our visitors can experience these magnificent birds up close and intimate, and have the opportunity to handle a trained hawk and enjoy the thrill of seeing it flying free and returning to your gloved fist. Programme 1 - A Hawk Walk
This activity is sufficient to give the visitor a basic insight into falconry and to gain the experience of handling and flying a trained hawk.
