The origin of the sport is a subject of some debate. According to popular legend, duckpin bowling began in Baltimore, Maryland around 1900, at a bowling alley owned by future baseball Hall of Famers John McGraw and Wilbert Robinson . However, according to a 2005 baseball book by Howard W. Rosenberg ( Cap Anson 3: Muggsy John McGraw and the Tricksters: Baseball's Fun Age of Rule Bending ), an article from May 1894 in the Lowell (Mass.) Sun confirms the existence of duckpins as of 1894. Rosenberg traced the story of crediting the origins of duckpins to McGraw and Robinson as far back as Shirley Povich of the Washington Post in the late 1930s. In any event, the name supposedly comes from a remark by McGraw during the first game played with pins cut down from old standard pins. McGraw, an avid duck hunter, said that the flying pins looked like "a flock of flying ducks"; a sportswriter turned the remark into the word "duckpins," and the name stuck. In 1985, an obscure 130-plus page publication called

DUCKPIN BOWLING....
EVERYTHING YOU COULD WANT IN A SPORT!

Duckpin is considered by many to be the perfect game. Played by millions in the United States and several other countries, it offers everything you could want in a sport. Duckpin bowling combines the elements of fun, excitement, challenge, competition and sociability into one fantastic activity.
The sport of duckpins originated around the turn of the century and it has grown to be one the most popular sports.
Everybody can bowl duckpins - men, women, adults, youngsters, seniors, big and small. If you can lift and swing close to a 4-pound ball, then you can enjoy duckpin bowling.
You will find countless people enjoying the thrills of duckpin bowling at your local duckpin center.
There are several opportunities for you to participate in duckpin bowling. Many people participate in league play, which is an organized weekly activity. There are various types of leagues, designed to fit everybody's needs, and many days and times from which to choose.
Your bowling center management can discuss these programs with you. By the way, you do not have to be an expert bowler to be in a league. Most leagues use a handicap system to equalize the competition.

The sport of duckpins was born at the old Diamond Alleys on Howard Street in Baltimore, Maryland. Diamond Alleys was owned by a couple of members of the old Baltimore Orioles minor league club Uncle Wilbert Robinson and John McGraw (you may remember McGraw as manager of baseball's New York Giants in the early 1900's). At the turn of the century, bowling leagues operated only during the winter months. In the summer, many centers closed down. However, a few centers (including Diamond Alleys) remained open for open play during the spring and summer. Diamond Alleys had some smaller six inch balls that were used for such off-the-wall games as cocked-hat (using only the 1, 7, and 10 pins) and five back (using the 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10 pins). During one of these matches, Frank Van Sant, the manager at Diamond Alleys, was drawn into a conversation about the small balls. Someone suggested that a set of his old, battered tenpins could be made over into little pins to conform to the six inch ball. Several days later, an old set was sent to John Dettmar, a wood-turner in Baltimore. About ten days later, Van Sant gathered all his regulars and dumped the new little pins in front of them. Within minutes, the little pins were set up on the tenpin spots and the first unofficial "small ball" game was underway. Only two balls were used, as in tenpins, and score was kept in the same way. When Robinson and McGraw (whose other hobby was duck hunting) saw the pins fly as the ball plowed into them, they remarked that the pins looked like a "flock of flying ducks." Bill Clarke, a sportswriter for the Baltimore Morning Sun, wrote a story on the fascinating new game and christened them "duckpins." The name has stuck ever since.

Originally opened in 1928 as Fountain Square Recreation, a bowling alley and billiard hall, the business closed in 1957 and remained empty until 1994 when it was restored with authentic 1930's vintage bowling equipment and reopened with eight lanes of duckpin bowling, a 1918 pool table and an extensive collection of bowling memorabilia dating to the early 1900's. For those unfamiliar with duckpin bowling , the game was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1900 and it was one of Babe Ruth's favorite games! Ten-pin bowling used to strictly be a winter sport and most alleys closed during the summer except for a few that remained open to play odd bowling games using the smaller balls. Summer bowlers suggested that it might be interesting to trim the standard pins down to match the size of the small ball. Because it was much harder to get strikes and spares, the rules were changed to allow three bowls on each turn but only counted as a score of ten if all ten pins were knocked down with the third ball. Duckpins became so popular that during the 1920's duckpin bowling spread along the east coast, from New England to Georgia. Today duckpin houses are still found only in the

History
Ten-pin bowling used to be strictly a winter sport. Most alleys closed down for the summer, but a few of them remained open so that bowlers could practice with small balls, about 6 inches in diameter. They usually played odd games called "back five," using just the 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10 pins, and "cocked hat," which used only the 1, 7, and 10. In 1900, summer bowlers at the Diamond Alleys in Baltimore suggested it might be interesting to trim down the standard pins to match the size of the ball. Manager John Van Sant liked the idea. He had a wood turner do the job and many of his customers enjoyed the new bowling game. At first, the rules of ten-pin bowling were used. But, because it's much harder to get strikes and spares, one small rule change was made: A bowler is allowed to use three bowls on each turn. If all ten pins are knocked down with three balls, it simply counts a score of ten. Van Sant demonstrated the new sport to the owners of the alley

Lets Play Duckpin Bowling
by Michael Russell
When one witness a bowling game where the players use balls and pins that are midget-like, he is witnessing a duckpin bowling competition.
Beginnings
Duckpin bowling was born somewhere in the 1900s in the eastern part of the United States. Duckpin is believed to have been born in the bowling alley which was owned by the famous baseball players Wilbert Robinson and John Mcgraw. History has it that people back then had an interesting idea of making the pins and balls smaller. The manager of the bowling alley, Mr. John Van Sant, hired a wood turner to customize the balls and pins. The people loved the new game and played it.
By the 1930s, around 200,000 people were playing the game. It has continuously gained popularity because people who wanted the fun of ten-pin bowling but hated the stress and backaches caused by the game quickly shifted to duckpin bowling.
Why is it called duckpin bowling?
The owners of the bowling alley (the baseball players) were also duck hunting enthusiasts. They loved hunting birds, especially duck during their spare time. As they watched the pins scatter around the alley, one of them made a comment about how the pins resembled ducks. This is the story of why the game was named duckpin

Duckpin Bowling in only 15 feet
These mini-bowling machines are pretty cool. They use real duckpins spaced closer together and a variation of the string-reset machines. The ball is more like a candlepin ball, being around 4 inches in diameter. You get a game of five frames for your money. I think I want one for my basement.

15. What Is Duckpin Bowling?
Brief and Straightforward Guide What is duckpin bowling?

What is Duckpin Bowling?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Popular along the eastern seaboard of the United States and even into the province of Quebec in Canada, duckpin bowling is somewhat similar to the more popular ten-pin bowling game, with some important differences. While there is some difference of opinion on the exact origins of the sport, there can be no doubt that duckpin bowling was an established pastime by World War I. One purported origin of duckbill bowling is traced to the beginning of the 20th century and the city of Baltimore, Maryland in the United States. According to this legend , the sport was first played at a bowling alley owned by John McGraw and Wilbert Robinson, both of whom were later inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Other sources trace the origin of the game to Lowell, Massachusetts in the early years of the 1890’s. Regardless of origin, the popular name of the sport is usually attributed to John McGraw. Since the new form of bowling involved the use of pins that were scaled down versions of the standard sized bowling pins, McGraw is said to have referred to the setup of the pins as resembling a flock of flying ducks. The fanciful image stuck, and the smaller pins were dubbed duckpins. There are several significant differences between standard bowling and duckpin bowling. First, the duckpin is shorter and has a more squat appearance than standard pins. Bowling balls used in duckpin bowling are also smaller and do not include any holes for the fingers. The bowler is allowed three shots to clear the pins, rather than two. Lofting, or tossing the ball a short distance down the lane, is also permissible with duckpin bowling.
