It's not how we think of America in 2007: starving pit bulls tearing one another apart, "bait" dogs torn apart in minutes, "losers" beaten, shot or electrocuted, all as spectators leer, cheer and place their bets. But, as the indictment of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick makes clear, such blood sport is common throughout the U.S., no longer confined to rural backwaters but increasingly popular in major cities and suburbs. And, perhaps most frightening to pet owners, the vicious blood sport feeds off of stolen household pets used as "bait." Although Vick pleaded not guilty Thursday in Richmond, Va., to federal charges that he sponsored and participated in a dogfighting operation, revelations since his arrest make it clear that dogfighting is riding a new wave of popularity.

July 26: Michael Vick pleaded not guily to federal dogfighting charges. NBC's Steve Handelsman reports. MSNBC
RICHMOND, Va. - While his Atlanta Falcons teammates reported to training camp without him, Michael Vick declared his innocence on federal dogfighting charges Thursday and said he looked forward to “clearing my good name.” Jeered by hundreds of protesters as he entered and left U.S. District Court in silence, the Atlanta Falcons quarterback said “not guilty” in a firm voice when asked how he pleaded to a conspiracy charge. When U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson asked his preference for a trial, Vick responded “by jury.” Hudson set a Nov. 26 date for Vick and his three co-defendants, all of whom also pleaded not guilty. Vick was released without bond, but with a series of conditions, including the surrender of his passport, a pledge not to travel outside the immediate area of his primary residence without court approval, and to not sell or possess a dog.

Dog fighting is a cruel and brutal practice. The abuses are so gruesome that even experienced investigators are shocked by what they discover at dog fighting raids. For the sake of human profit, the dogs are trained to kill. To ensure their aggression dogs are beaten, chained and fed gunpowder, illegal drugs and even live animals and sometimes they are not fed at all for long periods of time. In the end, dogs that do not win are either killed or left to die horrific and painful deaths. The Federal Dog Protection Act addresses these issues of cruelty, providing much needed protection to the animals that are pulled into this barbaric blood sport. This bill is necessary to adequately punish anyone who not only operates and engages in, but also attends and otherwise supports, dog-fighting events. In addition, the bill bans the use of the U.S. Postal Service to mail dog fighting paraphernalia and has a civil suit provision. That's why your help is crucial in putting an end to dog fighting. Sign this petition and let's protect dogs from this heinous practice once and for all.

But federal authorities have pursued no more than a handful of dogfighting and cockfighting cases, despite repeated violations of the law across the country, frequent tips from informants, and requests to assist with state and local prosecutions. That's largely because the crime of animal fighting carries only misdemeanor penalties under federal law . Prosecutors are reluctant to take such cases, and even when they do, the small fines and risk of minimal jail time do not serve as meaningful deterrents for those engaged in high stakes animal fighting enterprises; they're considered merely a "cost of doing business.” The “winner”? of a Dog Fight

    Watching Dogfighting Also Appalling
The jury trial of Michael Vick is set for November 26th, so don’t expect dogfighting stories to go away anytime soon. And let’s hope the shame stays in the public eye until the Feds can put an end to this horrific activity. Since the Vick indictment, only a handful of Vick fans have come to his defense … and most of them only ask for the process to take its course. I can deal with their legal logic. However, I cannot deal with those who admit to attending dogfighting – and blow it off as being less offensive than those who create the activity. That’s nonsensical since, like any event, without patrons, the activity can’t occur. Watching dogfighting is also appalling. Period. I’m the first to admit that I’ve done some dumb things in my life – especially during my college days. Most of us have skeletons in our closets. However, watching dogfighting is hideous to me because it goes beyond simply being young and stupid. Stupidity is a matter involving the organ above your neck. Watching dogfighting is a matter of the organ between your waist and neck. It’s a matter of the heart. While recently listening to Boston’s leading sports talk-radio station WEEI, fill-in co-host Steve DeOssie admitted to attending a dogfighting event. DeOssie, a former NFL player with the Giants, Jets, and Patriots, told listeners he was 22-years old when he attended the dogfight. He wrote it off as being young and stupid and said that he regretted attending. However, he also admitted that he didn’t leave until 11 dogfights were done.

And thanks to the celebrity of the landowner and admitted ringleader of that criminal and cruel dogfighting operation, NFL star quarterback Michael Vick, at least three new bills to strengthen federal laws against such a despicable deed have been introduced in the Senate and the House since the horrific story began to be illuminated four months ago.
There was a time when it was thought Vick would revolutionize his position in pro football with his unique athleticism. It is turning out that his longest-lasting legacy will be accidental but far more important: bringing political pressure to bear upon a most repulsive pastime.
In 2003, the feds arrested the so-called Al Capone of dogfighting, a guy named James Fricchione of New York, after 18 dogs, treadmills for training them, a fighting ring and an electrocution chamber were found on his property. He got two to seven years.

RICHMOND, Jan. 14 Animal rights activists say Virginia legislators reacted with skepticism, even jokes, when they tried in past years to advocate for harsher laws against animal fighting. That changed, they say, last year after Atlanta Falcons football star Michael Vick pleaded guilty to conspiracy in connection with a dogfighting operation on his property in southeastern Virginia, where dogs had been shot, hanged, beaten, drowned and electrocuted. Now activists are riding that wave of national publicity to try to get tougher laws on the books to increase penalties for those who organize or watch animal fights and to give law enforcement more powers to find and arrest them. The General Assembly, which began a 60-day legislative session last week, is considering more animal protection bills than in past years, many of them sponsored by Senate and House leaders. "The members of the General Assembly had a tendency not to take bills regarding animal welfare seriously," said Robin Starr, chief executive officer of the

The Wyoming Legislature, meanwhile, will consider increased penalties for animal cruelty, including dogfighting, when lawmakers meet in February, Sen. Jayne Mockler, D-Cheyenne, said Friday.
Dogfighting is already a felony in every state except for Idaho and Wyoming.
The Idaho Senate Judiciary and Rules committee gave speedy and unanimous approval on Friday to the bill by Sen. Majority Caucus Chairman Brad Little, R-Emmett, allowing it to be printed and introduced on the Senate floor. Currently, attending a dogfight in Idaho is legal and running the blood sport is only a misdemeanor.
"(The bill) reaches out and grabs all those affiliated with the dogfighting, including spectators, given this is a for-profit venture in many cases," Little said.

National Director, National Animal Interest Alliance As most informed citizens already know, Atlanta Falcons 27-year old quarterback Michael Vick was charged on July 18 of running a felony dogfighting operation on his estate in Surry County , Virginia. In an 18-page indictment, federal prosecutors say Vick actively participated in dogfights on his property, personally paid at least one winning bet, and allegedly authorized the electrocution of one dog that lost a fight. The indictment cites dogfighting activities going back to 2001. The media lost no time in digging out repulsive video footage of actual dogfights and stomach-turning accounts of the deliberate cruelty and savagery of this so-called "sport." Bleeding, crippled animals with lower jaws torn off, eyes gouged out, faces and bodies slashed to the bone; all make for heartbreaking news coverage. And the story grows even more horrific as reports surface revealing that thousands of American pets reported as stolen by their owners were the victims of dogfighting rings that used them for bait in dogfight training. It can't get much sicker than this.

Dog fighting is the worst of this exploitation. He says entertainers like DMX are wrong to use dogfighting as a selling point for their music.

" Of all the creatures, man is the most detestable. Of the entire brood, he is the only one that possesses malice. He is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot. "Mark Twain THOUGHTS ON DOG FIGHTING The American Pit Bull Terrier's story is mired in sad reality. Some fanciers, many who call themselves "dogmen", claim that in order to produce the real APBT, the dogs must be fought so they can prove their gameness (i.e. willingness to keep going despite pain and exhaustion). In their opinion, only the candidates that don't quit a fight are true representatives of the breed and should be bred - The others are called "curs" and eliminated. Those people firmly believe that the abolishment of "Gametesting" would destroy the APBT breed. They therefore feel completely justified to continue exploiting dogs by forcing them into the worse possible form of abuse.
