      1. What is dogfighting? 2. How does it cause animal suffering? The injuries inflicted and sustained by dogs participating in dogfights are frequently severe, even fatal. The American pit bull terriers used in the majority of these fights have been specifically bred and trained for fighting and are unrelenting in their attempts to overcome their opponents. With their extremely powerful jaws, they are able to inflict severe bruising, deep puncture wounds and broken bones. Dogs used in these events often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, or infection hours or even days after the fight. Other animals are often sacrificed as well. Some owners train their dogs for fights using smaller animals such as cats, rabbits or small dogs. These "bait" animals are often stolen pets or animals obtained through "free to good home" advertisements. 3. Are there other concerns?

But we agree with hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons that Cruel's Not Cool Listen to Simmons or see poster Contrary to what some people believe, it is NOT in a dog's nature to fight for no reason . In the wild, wolves or dogs may fight over territory. But dogs don't fight just for the fun of it! Dogs are social animals who - in the wild - hunt together, sleep together, and play together. It is a dog's nature to respect the pack leader and get along with the rest of the pack. Not to fight. edit Origins of domestic breeding
As with all domestic dogs, the ancestors of all breeds were wolves . The foundation breed of the fighting dog was, in its outward appearance, a large, low, heavy breed with a powerful build and strongly developed head. Dog breeding in its earliest stages was carried out systematically, with the desire for specialization. It is believed that the development of individual breeds took place in narrow geographic areas, corresponding to the performance required in these regions. Selection for performance, complemented by the breeding for suitable body forms, leads to the formation of breeds. The task of the fighting dog demanded specific basic anatomical traits and temperamental features. The anatomy of the fighting dog requires an imposing outward form to instill fear, with the foundation breed naturally large, low-slung, heavy, powerfully built, with a strongly developed head, powerful biting apparatus and a threatening voice. The goal is to breed a dog that will attack animals but is docile and affectionate toward humans. All breeds with a character suitable for protecting humans and fighting wild animals may be considered for dogfighting. Special attention is often given to the

Did you know? Aggression toward other dogs is not uncommon in all dog breeds... A famous German shepherd, Glen Johnson's OTCH "Avenger", UDTX, Am, UDT, SchH III, FH ("Sam") was described by Steve Robinson as "totally intolerant" of any other male dog near him unless under command. Sam has also been described as a totally friendly dog with people. As always, aggression directed at other dogs has nothing to do with a dog's soundness as a pet or working dog. Dogfighting
A dogfight is a cruel activity in which two dogs are forced to fight for the sake of human entertainment and profit. The dogs, usually pit bulls, Rottweilers, or Dobermans, are raised under horrific conditions and abusively trained to be aggressive. Humane officers and other law enforcement agents routinely break up illegal dogfighting rings and confiscate dogfighting paraphernalia, including treadmills used to build the dog's endurance and drugs used to numb pain from injuries or to "jazz up" the dogs. They often find mesh bags, which are used to suspend kittens, rabbits, puppies, and other small prey above the dogs to encourage a "fighting spirit."
Sadly, they often find many dead and dying dogs, too. Dogs who do survive often sustain serious injuries, such as broken bones and crushed cartilage. Many suffer and die from blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, or infection hours or days after a fight.
If you think dogfighting is taking place in your area, please contact your local humane society or police department to investigate. You can also help spread the word about dogfighting by writing a letter to the editor of your local paper. For tips on writing effective letters, see "

Incredible Story of a Dog Rescued from Hell
Animal Advocacy Crimes Against Canines ... Comments(15) Meet Oogy. His story will rip your heart out but it is one you will never forget, just like everyone who has ever met him, this incredible survivor from hell. If you care, take the time to read, it will be worth those few minutes. After you finish I think you will understand what you need to do. Please, do it! When Oogy was four months old and weighed thirty five pounds he was tied to a stake and used as bait for a Pit Bull. The left side of his face from just behind his eye was torn off, including his ear. He was bitten so hard a piece of his jaw bone was crushed. Afterward, he was thrown into a cage and left to bleed to death. I am not a religious man, but I can only conclude that at that moment God turned around and paid attention. The police raided the facility, found Oogy, and took him to Ardmore Animal Hospital, where Dr. Bianco stitched him up and saved him. This coincided with the last weekend of life for our cat, Buzzy, who was 14 at the tine. My sons and I had taken Buzzy to AAH for his last visit. The staff had gathered Buzzy in when out comes this pup to be walked that looked like nothing more than a gargoyle. He covered us with kisses. The boys and I fell instantly in love with him.

Reyes, the alleged operator of Big Apple kennels, which has produced some of the fiercest fighting dogs on the professional circuit, lets the dogs out twice a day to eat and exercise - an hour in the morning and evening - in the concrete yard strewn with used condoms, Dutch Masters cigar wrappers, and the kind of tiny baggies used to hold illegal drugs. Last week, Reyes told The Post that he could have been shut down years ago, but that the ASPCA - despite finding an animal with obvious fighting injuries - let him off scot-free. "At the time, I had seven dogs; they took the marked one. It was a chocolate red-nose," Reyes said. He said the officer approved the lined-up kennels, but confiscated the wounded dog.

Michael Vick Busted for Illegal Dogfighting
Posted Jul 17th 2007 6:57PM by TMZ Staff It's dog days for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and others, after being indicted today on federal charges related to illegal dogfighting.
Vick was charged with illegal competitive dogfighting, which involves training pit bulls to fight against other dogs. When authorities searched Vick's property this month, they found 54 pit bulls and a host of brutal items including a "rape stand," used to hold dogs in place for mating; an electric treadmill modified for dogs and a bloodied piece of carpeting.
Graves of seven pit bulls were found inside "Bad Newz Kennels," a Virginia property owned by Vick. The dogs were allegedly killed after testing whether they would be good fighters. According to documents, dogfights would end when one dog died or backed down, and dogs were sometimes put to death by drowning, strangulation, hanging, gunshot, electrocution or some other method.
The indictment alleges that Vick and his co-defendants began sponsoring dogfights in early 2001, the former Virginia Tech star's rookie year with the Falcons.

but Vick, who has admitted bankrolling the Bad Newz Kennels,
could be sentenced to up to five years in prison. (Let Us Pray) Against Dog Fighting The whole Michael Vick scandal this summer shed light into the cruel and secretive world of professional dog fighting. Even though it's illegal in all 50 states, dog fighting participants and spectators are estimated in the tens of thousands. The abuses of dog fighting are gruesome. For the sake of human profit, the dogs are trained to kill. They are beaten, chained, fed gunpowder, illegal drugs... the horrors these dogs face go on and on. In the end, dogs that don't win are killed or left to die painful deaths. Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who pleaded guilty to federal dog fighting charges

He had scars, physically and emotionally, probably from being used as bait for dogs training to fight. Kennels across America are full of pit bulls that have been mistreated or abandoned by their owners. The Humane Society estimates that 40 percent of dogs in shelters are pit bulls, outnumbering all other breeds. And there is a reason why. Pit bulls are the most popular breed used in dogfighting, a blood sport that exists in an underground world, coming to light only through rare, high-profile cases. February 18, 2004 For years the Pima County Sheriff's Department found the chewed-up bodies of dead dogs in the Arizona desert. But it wasn't until four years ago that the truth behind the killings emerged: Stolen family pets were being used in bloody training exercises by dog fighting rings. Email to a Friend RELATED Like all good detectives, Mike Duffey of the Pima County Sheriff's Department pieced together the clues. Four years ago he was assigned to investigate animal crimes full-time. Duffey knew the dead dogs found in the county's rural areas weren't strays, because the pads of their feet and their nails had not been worn down from a life on the streets. So Duffey checked the lost-and-stolen-animal reports kept by the local humane society. "We found that a lot of the dogs found in these desert dumping areas were in fact, at one time, [reported] stolen," said Duffey, co-chair of the Animal Cruelty Taskforce of Southern Arizona, an organization made up of law-enforcement, criminal-justice, and animal-protection professionals. "So we began looking for a connection."
