"Dog racing" usually refers to Greyhound racing , which is the largest and most widespread type of canine competition. In the United States, greyhound racing has been banned in all but a few states, where its popularity is in decline as the typical dog track attendees grow older. In states where greyhound races do occur, they are strictly regulated by the government because parimutuel gambling on the races is allowed. Other breeds of dogs race; however, these breeds typically race as part of local kennel club events, and are not commercial ventures. Whippet races are fairly common in the United States, although the most popular dog racing events are those of Dachshunds . Surprisingly, dachshund racing is not without its controversy, and some animal rights activists, including the Dachshund Club of America , are trying to ban the events. Dogsled racing is another type of race involving dogs.

Greyhound Dog Racing rules The noble greyhound - a brief history. Greyhounds were first introduced to America in the 18th century to help farmers control the jackrabbit population. As time went by, the farmers started to conduct some form of competitive greyhound racing which evolved into the greyhound track racing as we know it today. The origin of the greyhound is quite old, possibly dating back thousands of years. The Pharaohs rated them first among all animals as both pets and hunters. Images of the early greyhound can be seen etched on walls of ancient Egyptian tombs. In Arabian culture at that time, the birth of a greyhound ranked nearly as high as the birth of a son. In Persia, Rome and Greece, the greyhound enjoyed similar standing. Greyhound racing in England was first established for the English nobility and could not be enjoyed by other citizens. In 1014 King Canute of England enacted the Forest Laws, which stated that only noblemen could own and hunt with greyhounds. The elegance and beauty of this most noble animal is a sight to behold. Additionally, at the end of their racing career the greyhounds easily adapt to the life of a loving pet and have become the pet of choice among an increasing number of pet lovers.

Sled Dog Racing
Easier - People from the polar regions have used dogs and sleds for a long time. Working dogs were used in everyday life to protect and in hunting. But most of all, dogs and sleds were used to carry food, products, and other things. The first sled dog races may have been among native people as they dashed their dog teams across the frozen ice fields. Sled dog racing was continued by immigrant trappers, miners, freight haulers, and settlers. Harder - Indigenous people of the far North regions were dependent on sled dogs for protection, companionship, hunting, trapping, and transportation for thousands of years. In the more recent European immigrations to North America, newcomers quickly saw the value of working sled dogs. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police started running dog-team patrols in the northern frontiers as early as 1873. Mail teams later delivered the news to outlying communities. Inland settlements were dependent on sled dog freight haulers. Explorers such as Byrd, Peary, and Amundsen relied on sled dogs in their exploration of frozen wastelands. Today, few of the inhabitants of the Far North are dependent on dogs for basic survival. However, sled dog racing continues in the United States, Canada, Northern Europe, the United Kingdom, Japan, and other locations around the world.

In 1014, King Canute of England enacted the Forest Laws, which stated that only noblemen could own and hunt with greyhounds. In the 1500s, Queen Elizabeth I abolished this law and later initiated the first formal rules of greyhound coursing. Thus, dog racing became known as the "Sport of Queens." In the early 1900s, huge crowds would gather to watch greyhound coursing. In the interest of safety, enclosed courses were introduced. These enclosed courses were much smaller than the open courses and speed over agility was of utmost importance. It was just a matter of time before racing would take over from the well established coursing. On July 24, 1926, in front of 1,700 spectators, seven Greyhounds leapt out of the traps at Belle Vue Dog Racing Stadium and raced to catch an electric hare. This marked the first ever modern greyhound race in Great Britain. Soon after, greyhound tracks sprung up all over the United Kingdom and dog racing was firmly established in the sporting scene.

In revived campaign over dog tracks, battleground is Raynham
Email Print Text size By Robert Preer Globe Correspondent January 13, 2008 M arion Penney of Brockton, who adopted her first greyhound 15 years ago, spent days last fall collecting signatures on a petition to ban dog racing in Massachusetts. "It's a terrible thing to do to these sweet, gentle, loving animals," says Penney. "I'd like to put those people out there and let them race." George Carney, owner of Raynham Park, is one of those people. But he says the activists trying to shut down his greyhound track are misguided. Greyhounds are born to run, he says, and the race dogs are treated better than most house pets. The battle over greyhound racing is being joined again in Massachusetts, as a proposed ban makes its way toward a November ballot vote - a redux of 2000. Once again, Raynham Park is ground zero in the battle.

A Life of Endless Confinement
While at the racetrack, dogs are confined in small cages barely large enough for them to stand up or turn around for long hours each day. On average, over one thousand dogs live in warehouse style kennels at each racetrack.
Dogs Suffer Serious Injuries
Thousands of dogs are seriously injured each year at commercial racetracks, including dogs that suffer broken legs, cardiac arrest, spinal cord paralysis and broken necks. Unfortunately, not all of these injuries are reported to the public because some states do not even keep records on the number of dogs injured each year.
Dogs are Killed When They are No Longer Profitable
Thousands of dogs are killed when they are injured or are no longer fast enough to be profitable. According to the pro-racing National Greyhound Association, an estimated 5,000 dogs were killed in 2003.

Get along little doggies learn about sled dog racing.
http://www.kidsturncentral.com/topics/animals/sleddog1.htm
Animals/Sports Sled Dog Racing Before sled dog racing became a formal sport, sled dogs were bred and used by native people of the polar regions of the world. They were used in their everyday lives for survival in harsh climates, particularly for transportation and work. Sled dog racing began as a formal sport with the first All-Alaska Sweepstakes race in 1908. Rules for the races were established, and they provided a good diversion to the difficult living conditions of the area. In the 1920's, airplanes began to replace sled dog teams for transportation, freight hauling, and mail delivery. In 1925, sled dogs proved that they were invaluable during the "Great Race of Mercy to Nome." Nome, Alaska was experiencing an outbreak of diphtheria that threatened to become a fatal epidemic. The antitoxin serum needed to be relayed from Nenana, Alaska to Nome, Alaska. Twenty drivers and more than 100 dogs were recruited for a sled dog run to deliver the serum. Planes could not be used due to extreme cold and fearing if the plane crashed, the serum would be lost. The sled dog drive was a success, the serum was delivered and lives were saved. The drive covered 674 miles in less than five and a half days.
