Dinghy sailing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search , a Topper and a Graduate Dinghy sailing is the activity of sailing small boats by using (1) the sails and (2) underwater foils daggerboard or centreboard and rudder ). It also involves adjusting (3) the sail trim and (4) balance by movement of the crew , particularly in windy weather ("move fast or swim"). In rivers and tidal waters the effective choice of route in terms of existing and anticipated wind shifts (5) and currents (6) can be important. When racing , the above skills need to be refined and additional skills and techniques learned, such as (7) the application of the " racing rules of sailing ", (8) boat handling skills when starting and when rounding marks, and (9) knowledge of tactics and strategy relative to individual boats or the fleet in order to avoid the harmful effects of their sails on your wind, or to influence their movements to your advantage. Those shared challenges, and the variability of the weather and sea can make dinghy sailing and racing a fascinating and rewarding recreational sport: physically, mentally, and in terms of personal relationships with other crew member(s), competitors, and organisers.

Why....Dinghy Sailing? Dinghy Sailing? Do it for the adrenalin rush! There is nothing like a sunny late Autumnal day on the south coast of England for exhilarating and memorable sailing. The wind heaves at a force 5 to 6 , the sun leaves the field in the west and leaves behind a blood-soaked like battle field of reds and oranges. The shift down in temperature irritates the wind. It squeals and squawks its way across the estuary banks cutting through lines of stationery boats stopping only to rattle any loose fabric or rope. The familiar tingling sound of halyards scratching against metal masts conjure a cacophony of sound that wraiths might create. Aboard your boat, you seek to harness rather than fight this pagan force of the wind.

Flying Scot Atlantic Coast Championship, 9-22 and 9-23 Toms River, New Jersey. Conditions between Saturday and Sunday couldn't have been more different. On Saturday the 10 to 15 knot winds blew from the south with light cells of rain passing through the area. On Sunday the 8 to 12 wind blew from the north under clear sunny skies. Conditions both days made for some great racing. The race committee did an excellent job of getting races off on time and set nice length windward leeward courses with two and a half laps each. There was plenty of opportunity to pickoff boats or unfortunately fall behind. RESULTS Photos by Dan Neff Allan Terhune's Report
