By tradition, the Daito-Ryu was founded in 1100 AD by Minamoto (Genji) Yoshimitsu, sixth generation descendant of the Emperor Seiwa. Yoshimitsu's son Yoshikiyo moved to Koga (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture) and established the Takeda clan; the art was secretly transmitted among family members from generation to generation. In 1574, Kunitsugu Takeda moved to Aizu (Fukushima Prefecture) where the special "oshiki-uchi" (also known as o-dome) techniques were taught exclusively to high ranking samurai of the Aizu-han for the next three hundred years.

Kendo World Forums Other Arts Kobudo PDA View Full Version : New Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu and Ono-ha Itto-ryu book judasith 31-10-2006, 11:32 PM Dear Posters,
A new detailed book in english language about Takeda's mainline Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu and Ono-ha Itto-ryu kenjutsu is available as a presale on Budovideos.com.
Takeda-den Ono-ha Itto-ryu is a koryu kenjutsu school transmitted in the Aizu-Takeda Clan since Ono Tadatsune created the school (Ono Tadaaki didn't yet call his art Ono-ha). It was passed down in a parallel way to the Ono mainline, which has its honbu in Tokyo and is called Takeda-den because Takeda Sokaku (called "kotengu" for his ability in swordmanship) added his own small modifications to the original curriculum.
Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu is maybe the main and biggest jujutsu koryu in Japan, and the origin of, among other schools, modern Aikido, Yoseikan Budo, Hakko-ryu, but also Hapkido and in part Shorinji Kempo.

Bio of Katsuyuki Kondo
Katsuyuki Kondo was born in Tokyo in 1945. He began his training in Daito-ryu aikijujutsu as a teenager under Tsunejiro Hosono and later Kotaro Yoshida, a friend and senior in Daito-ryu to Morihei Ueshiba. With an introduction from Yoshida, Kondo made periodic visits to Hokkaido starting in 1961 to practice under Tokimune Takeda Sensei. He continued his training under the Daito-ryu headmaster for 32 years.
Tokimune certified Kondo as a Daito-ryu instructor (kyoju dairi) in 1974. In 1988, Kondo was awarded the menkyo kaiden by Tokimune and also appointed Soke Dairi (representative of the headmaster). Kondo currently operates the Shimbukan Dojo in Tokyo which has functioned as the Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Hombu Dojo since shortly after Tokimune Takeda's passing. Kondo is also one of Japan's leading authorities on swordsman, calligrapher, and Zen master Tesshu Yamaoka.

Daito Ryu - History
(* Quoted from http://www.daito-ryu.com *) Historians divide the eras of Japan after the the founding of a fixed capital at Nara (710-794) in: Heian (up to 1185), Kamakura (up to 1333); Ashikaga (up to 1392); Muromachi (up to 1572) and Momoyama (up to 1603) and later Edo, which ends with the disruption of the shogunal system and the restauration of the imperial power (Meiji era) and the transformation of Japan in an industrial nation. The name of the Takeda clan is recurrent in Japanese history, and its characters reflect the fierce and stubborn soul of the bushi. The wars of this clan are joined with the ones of the entire country. The facts reported here on show some of the traits that bind the history of Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu and its clan to the feudal past of Japan. The oral tradition of the Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu gives credit for the founding of the art to Shinra Saburo Minamoto no Yoshimitsu (1057-1127), third son of Yoriyoshi Minamoto and descendant to the Emperor, Fujiwara Seiwa. Yoshimitsu was the lord of the Daito castle (from here the name of the modern art) but his son Yoshikiyo transfered in Takeda in the Kai province where he took as his name Takeda, giving birth to that clan. The art was passed in the Takeda Clan, which had later his most famous esponent in the reknowned general Takeda Shingen, then in the Aizu-Hoshina clan.
