The focus of training involves working with a partner or partners.
The role of the "Attacker" in training is crucial.  In Aikido, the attacker is often called "Uke" or "one who is thrown."
You can often tell how good a person's Aikido is by their knowledge of the role of Uke.
Ukemi:
As Uke, you learn how to give a committed attack, for the sake of training yourself and your partner.  Don't worry.  You don't have to be a trained fighter or have any experience (or even athleticism).  This can be accomplished at any pace.  But you will also be able to "learn" with your body, so that you will better understand how to recreate a technique when the roles are reversed.  ."Body learning" is as crucial as learning with your eyes or your brain.  Remember, Aikido teaches Unity of Body and Mind.
BODY/FOOT MOVEMENTS:
GENERAL INFORMATION
Founded in Japan by Morihei Ueshiba,  Aikido means "The Way of Harmonious Energies."  As a Martial Art, it stresses the Unity of Mind & Body.  Aikido is a True and Effective ALL
We teach coordinated foot and hand movements, to unify Body and Mind.  From a standpoint of Physics, the Power of a "Centered" body is far more powerful than the Power of a single arm or leg.  We teach coordination of breathing methods and body movements for both Self-defense and Health Benefits.

This is a fascinating and authoritative look at Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu. It has many B/W photos, and at the end of the book, it also shows a representative sampling of Daito-ryu techniques. I especially enjoyed reading this book because it helps lay to rest some of the myths surrounding one of the earliest Judoka, Shiro Saigo. If I were training in Aikido or Daito-ryu, this book would easily rate 5 stars. Definitely take a look at this one, if you can.

Daito-ryu Aiki-jutsu
Daito-ryu was developed in large part as a means of self-defense, as a way to effectively and efficiently neutralize violence, not cause it. There are no competitive matches in Daito-ryu. One distinctive feature of Daito-ryu is that it has incorporated many of the essential elements and principles of other schools of budo, most notably the Ono-ha Itto-ryu. Daito-ryu goes beyond being a simple means of self-defense, and aims at putting mind and body in balance with the spirit that pervades the universe, developing oneself as a person, and contributing to society. The Daito-Ryu is thought to have been founded in the 12th century by Minamoto (Genji) Yoshimitsu, a descendant of the Emperor Seiwa. Long kept a secret under the Minamoto clan, the art was used by the Emperor's army and private guard. Controlled by Japanese nobility, appointed official martial art of the Shogun's residence by Hoshina Masayuki in the late 1600's, Daito techniques were transmitted from generation to generation. Through the centuries numerous masters of this discipline were important war lords such as Shingen Takeda, undoubtedly the most famous in Japanese culture. The most noble figures in Daito-Ryu history was Minamoto, Takeda (1758-1853) and Tanomo (1860-1943). Due to the discipline and perseverance of the Ichikawa and Hanmura families the ancient tradition of Daito Ryu was transmitted unaltered.

ABOUT DAITO-RYU AIKI JUJUTSU The Essence of
Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu
Taken From Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu Home Page Arts such as sumo, judo, karate, and wrestling, are often called "fighting arts." While it is not our purpose here to argue whether or not this term is appropriate for these budo and sports, we can state definitively that Daito-ryu aiki jujutsu is not at all a "fighting art" in the sense that these others might be considered to be. A look at the history of Daito-ryu shows clearly that it was developed in large part as a means of self-defense, particularly one to be used by warriors while inside the palace. This may be seen in the inclusion and emphasis on oshikiiuchi . In short, Daito-ryu was developed as a way to effectively and efficiently neutralize violence, not cause it. This is in perfect agreement with the Chinese character for the "bu" in budo, one interpretation of which is "to stop halberds." This is why that although we have forms used to demonstrate aikijutsu, there are no competitive matches. One distinctive feature of Daito-ryu is that it has incorporated many of the essential elements and principles of other schools of budo, most notably the Ono-ha Itto-ryu. This was done to better allow the student to capture the essence of budo and to transform the art into a comprehensive one.

Stanley A. Pranin Aiki News #94, Winter/Spring 1993) Few individuals have so thoroughly investigated the origins of aikido as Aiki News' own editor-in-chief Stanley Pranin. In this new series, originally written for publication in the Japanese-language magazine Wushu, Pranin recounts some of the highlights of aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba's long career through his association with his teachers and leading students. This first installment focuses on the extremely significant but little understood relationship between Morihei Ueshiba and his teacher, Sokaku Takeda. Let me begin by stating categorically that the major technical influence on the development of aikido is Daito-ryu jujutsu. This art, which is said to be the continuation of a martial tradition of the Aizu Clan dating back several hundred years, was propagated in many areas of Japan during the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods by the famous martial artist, Sokaku Takeda. Known equally for his martial prowess and severity of character, Takeda had used his skills in life-and-death encounters on more than one occasion.Takeda was fifty-four years old when Morihei Ueshiba first met him at the Hisada Inn in Engaru, Hokkaido in late February 1915. This encounter marked the beginning of a long, stormy yet ultimately productive association between the two, which lasted for more than twenty years. Ueshiba's initial exposure to Daito-ryu practice included three 10-day seminars in close succession which concluded on April 4 of that same year. Daito-ryu records show he then participated in three other seminars taught by Takeda in 1916. Ueshiba also invited Takeda to his home and received intensive, private instruction in the highly-refined techniques of Daito-ryu. Unfortunately, few details about this study and how long it lasted are known.

My name is Jose Garrido and this is my 1st post on this forum.
My group was officially named as a mainline tradition Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Study Group under Katsuyuki Kondo, Menkyo Kaiden. This is after our seminar in October 2006 that he taught at our dojo and our 8 year relationship with him. If any of you are interested in training in authentic mainline Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu and can come to the New York City Metro Area (including NJ) please contact me via PM or email.
This is also true if you have any questins about Daito-ryu that I may help you with. I am willing to share my limited knowledge in such matters (as far as I can according to DTR decorum).
Respectfully,

When you have a chance I'd love to hear how Daito-ryu compares to Nihon Goshin, the similarities and differences. Maybe in another thread. zDom 01-03-2007, 07:18 PM

In 1644, Kunitsugu, a remote relative of the family went to Aizu in 1644 and was taken as advisor for Hoshina Masayuki Daimyo (1611-1673), the son of the second Tokugawa Shogun, Hidetada. According to the tradition, he taught the secret techniques of its family to his lord, Masayuki Daimyo, by combining them with the principles of the courtship manner (oshikiuchi) and evolve it in a system of self-defence inside the palace. This amalgam, with Itto-ryu Hoshina (a form of Kenjyutsu) became the base and the drive of the martial arts for the strongholds of the family of Aizu. Takeda Sokaku Takeda Sokaku was born the second son of Takeda Sokichi on October 10, 1859 in the Takeda mansion in Oike in Aizu, present-day Fukushima prefecture. As a boy, Sokaku learned kenjutsu, bojutsu, sumo, and Daito-ryu from his father, and studied Ono-ha Itto-ryu at the Yokikan dojo under Shibuya Toba. With the beginning of the Meiji period, the age of the sword had ended, and no matter how skilled a swordsman might be, he can no longer make any mark and will amount to nothing. Therefore, it is time to pursue and make your way with jujutsu.
